Nestled beneath a sequoia tree Fearthainn took advantage of the final rays of the sun. The clouds had become fingers of pink tipped with a thin lining of gold as the sun began its decent behind the majestic mountains. In a graceful arc her head hung down from her neck and the lids of her eyes concealed two emerald gems. Her ears flicked this way and that as she listened to the sounds of dusk. A cooling breeze swept through the green blades of grass surrounding her creating a pleasant yet natural music, only audible to those who took the time to listen. The temperature ha d begun to drop but the little patch of sun upon her back kept her from becoming too chilled. Upon her pale fur the sunlight made her appear to glow a gentle gold, much like the clouds. Shadows of trees and rocks had become elongated casting tongues of darkness here and there. One had already reached her rear end and her skin began to tingle as it lost its warmth. She knew she would have to return home at some point but she was just too comfortable. Opening her eyes she gently lifted her head and stared at the scenery about her. The world looked so peaceful that it was hard to imagine there being natural disasters or death upon its surface. The fact that the world was a wondrous place never once escaped Fearthainn’s notice. Rolling onto her side and allowing her head to rest upon the ground she fell into a pensive mood. She knew if she were out here too long her father would send a search party looking for her until she was safely at home. He always seemed to worry too much about her welfare, treating her as a child rather than the mare she had become. Even so, it was logical for a father to worry over his children; it was just the way animals were wired. Releasing a sigh of contentment she pushed all thoughts of her father aside and moved on to bigger things. She began to wonder why only the sun produced warmth, the moon was basically the same only a different color. She had heard once that the sun was a big ball of gas and the moon was merely a large rock but she had a hard time believing that. The rocks she saw around never produced such an amazing light as the moon; it couldn’t be just a rock. Or, could it? The universe had so many secrets, so many things that Fearthainn desired to know. Why did others laugh at her for not catching on when someone used sarcasm? She found no humor it in. Why did her mother and father show so much love for one another? It was only a chemical reaction designed to fade. Perhaps it was that the ones around her knew more about how to live whereas she knew more about living. Stretching her neck out she closed her mind to such thoughts and turned her attention instead upon nature. In her mind, there was no place for sorrow in such a beautiful place.

The chilled waters of the small stream felt like bliss upon the grey stallions sweat covered body, washing away the salt and grime and leaving him clean and refreshed. One might wonder what he had been doing to get into such a state, after all such a nice day did not often warrant intense exercise. Unless of course you were obsessed with exercise, which many might argue Alexiel was. Not necessarily exercise itself, but his days had become a routine of training and fighting and training and fighting. Aleksei had taught him well and under her knowledge and experience he had been transformed from an angry weak youth into a strong and daring protector.

But that was all he did now, sought out the most evil and despicable of the world and destroyed them so that others may have the life he had never. And yet he wondered often, if there was to be more out there for him. He was angry, he could not deny it, to do so would be a lie. However after all his training he had learned to focus less on revenge and more on his..."duty" as Aleksei has called it. She was right of course though. Who else was born with the natural ability to fight off those who harmed the innocent other than them. It was a duty, an obligation. He felt guilty for feeling that way, but often it felt like such a weight on him, such a burden that he longed to break free of. Often he wondered if there was more to life than just the senseless emotions that drove him on. Anger, duty, guilt.

He sighed, shaking the drops from his mane and wandering into the trees, heading for a meadow he knew of not far from here. The wind blew his way, and out of reflex Alexiel's ears perked and his nostrils flared. There was someone else there. But, the scents told him that this was no flesh eater up ahead, there was no scent of blood on the wind, just something that reminded him faintly of sweet grass and honey. Curious, he wandered further. Who was it that ventured here so near dark? Most soquili he could think of would most likely be starting to settle down for the night, generally in somewhere a little less open. Though he supposed the lifestyle he had become accustomed to had made him more wary than others, after all this did seem like a fairly safe forest. In reality, he probably needed to lighten up. Still, he was one that was always on guard. Moving his feathered legs into a trot he entered the meadow and slowed as he approached the figure nestled beneath the tree as not to scare it.

"Hello there. I was wondering what another soul might be doing out here so close to nightfall."

A gentle voice caused her ears to flick back as she found she was no longer alone. The question he had posed was rather simple but, as per usual, she processed the appropriate answer in her mind. Without too much movement she craned her neck further back to look at whomever she was about to enter into a conversation with. Naturally the first thing that caught her notice was the four beautiful wings upon his back, she had heard tell of such a beautiful breed but she had never seen one before. Her eyes then wandered over the rest of the stallion taking in the wings on his ankles and behind his ears, but mostly the veiled feelings behind his eyes. Though he seemed fine outwardly there was something in his eyes that contested that; it was the same with her father. Lowering her eyelids slightly she moved her head back into its original position and continued to watch the last piece of the sun dip below the horizon.

“Have you ever just watched the sun fall? It is quite a marvelous spectacle if you take the time.” Again angling her head so she may see him she produced a gentle smile. “Besides, during the night one is able to see the stars and that is a wonder in itself.” Pausing she flicked her eyes skyward in an attempt to see if the stars had yet begun to twinkle. “I’ve heard others say you can actually form shapes from them. Whether that is true or not is hard to say, the mind can do such strange things with rather ordinary objects.”

Extending one of her forelegs out she brought her neck up off the ground and pushed herself into a standing position. The last of the gilded sun had fallen behind the mountains and she was now free to focus all of her attention upon the stallion. Again his wings caused her heart to pound in her chest, how must it be to see the world from a bird’s view perspective? Without much thought about manners she walked directly up to him and began examining the magnificent things. “These are quite amazing, has anyone ever told you that?”

Within her family it was a well known fact that Fearthainn wasn’t big on manners. She was normally quite polite but when she saw something that captivated her she seldom exercised proper etiquette. It had been an issue she had attempted to address multiple times in the past. Even so, no matter how hard she tried she could never break herself of her thirst for knowledge. By many she was considered odd because of her love of education. She spent most of her younger years alone due to this fact, she was lucky to have had Edana to remain as her constant companion.

As the figure turned and the last of the sunlight shone on the side of her face and fur, he saw it was a mare, the gold of the sun bringing out the peachy-gold tones of her coat and highlighting her chocolate brown mane. She stared at him calmly with the the brightest green eyes he had ever seen before, and Alexiel had the feeling she that the thoughts behind those eyes were racing. She look him over with a curious but casual eye, dwelling on his wings, as most tended to do and the lingering once again as their eyes locked. He could tell she was silently making notes about him, though as it seemed mostly for curiosities sake he didn't mine. He was intrigued by her as well, by the calm observation and how she didn't seem to feel the need to speak right away.

Alexiel turned his head to the burning red in the sky as she spoke, watching the sun as she did. Indeed, it was quite a beautiful spectacle. And though she did not know it the mare had made him painfully aware of the fact that it had been a very long time indeed since he had last watched the sunset. He missed the appreciation of beauty he once partook in. Not that he didn't still appreciate nature's beauty, but often his thoughts were consumed with other matters far less pretty.

"Yes, I too have heard that about the stars. My parents used to watch the stars often, they had several names for different groupings of stars. I used to look for pictures in them too." Alexiel remarked with a faint smile. That had been long ago that he had lay on the grass beside his mother and been awed by the vast and endless wall of night. That too, he missed. That youthful innocence he had once possessed, had long since been replaced with knowledge, and disgust at the horrors of the world.

The remark about his wings brought him out of his musings and he watched curiously as she marched right up to them and began examining them. He laughed at her manners. Perhaps not so much in the way of etiquette but he found it amusing, he liked that she was so sure of herself to say what she thought. "Thank you, and yes many seem to be quite intrigued by them as you are. I suppose they are a rarity in these parts. I myself have only met one or two others with the same wings as I."

He turned also to look at his wings, definitely not in quite as perfect shape as they could be. However he used his wings to the purposes he saw fit, and as a child raised by a family of winds he had been raised the way any wind was raised. As such he knew his wings were different, however he never thought much of it since they seemed to serve the same purpose as any other wings. At one point, he had believed he had just mistakenly inherited a set of wings from each of his parents. Of course it wasn't until later he realized he was a different breed entirely.

The sky began to darken above them and the stars began to show more and more brightly. Her father had once told her that when he felt lost he would look to the stars for guidance. She would always roll her eyes or snort, how could something without the capability of speech guide someone or even give them answers? Knowledge was the only thing able to give you solid guidance and responses. Whenever she told this to her sire he would look at her as though saddened by the statement. She hated making him feel bad but she knew it was because he didn’t understand that just because she valued knowledge it didn’t mean that she didn’t value other things as well. Her eyes flicked skyward as the four winged stallion mention how his parents would gaze up at the numerous stars. As she looked at them she couldn’t seem to form an image, she merely saw dots. She had heard of the different constellations but most times when someone tried to point it out to her she wouldn’t be able to see them. “I’ve never been able to see the image within the stars.” She giggled gently. “My sister used to always become frustrated with me because she would spend so much time attempting to make me see them.” Turning her eyes back to his she smiled a warm smile. “Perhaps it takes a specific eye to see them, or maybe I haven’t yet learned how to visualize them. Did your parents teach you how to see what was hidden up there?” Without knowing his background she figured this question was innocent enough, a small voice in the back of her mind told her she was perhaps prying but she only listened to her conscious every so often.

She looked upon the stallion with renewed interest as he spoke of his wings. Her emerald eyes roamed over them once again as she took note of the glorious feathers with their light coloring and the stripes of darker gray spread over them. “A rarity indeed!” She exclaimed. “It is difficult to believe there are more like you out in the world, though I suppose it would be naïve of me to assume that you are the only one of your kind.” Backing up a small ways she stretched out her neck and observed the wings behind his ears. “As a male you would probably prefer the term handsome but I must say you are quite beautiful.” The last of her sentence was laced in a gentle laugh, her mother’s laugh as her father always said. He often described it as the smoothness of a slow moving stream and the clarity of a cloudless day. She often didn’t believe this description but even her sister would tell her. “I hope you don’t find that insulting in the sense that I am emasculating you.” The fact that perhaps she was crowding his personal space didn’t even come to her mind. She was often described as being talkative and brash but she couldn’t really help herself. “Not to say that you aren’t handsome as well.” She added as an afterthought.

Blinking a few times she lowered her head and looked him in the eyes once more, they reminded her of a cloudy day. One where rain falls and makes the earth smell sweet and fresh, she imagined lightning and thunder and agreed that, on occasion, his eyes could be filled with that power as well as tranquility. “You must forgive my lack of etiquette, my name is Fearthainn. I apologize for the length but my father decided on a Gaelic name that translates into rain. My sister and others call me Ainn, you are welcomed to do so if you like.” Taking a few steps back she put a bit of distance between them so as not to seem too odd in the mind of someone she had only just encountered. “Normally an introduction is customary before an approach but I couldn’t help myself.” She stated with a small smile.

At her comment, Alexiel turned his silver eyes to the sky, watching as the tiny pinpricks flickered above, and mentally searching for the shapes he knew so well. Though he had never been a super imaginative child, he had always had a good time finding pictures and shapes and stories in the stars. He had always felt almost, that they were speaking to him, whispering in whatever ways stars did and often he had longed to spread him wings and soar among them and let his burdens lift away. It felt almost too simple, to be a star, and he missed the feeling of wishing on them. It had been a long time since Alex had last turned his thoughts to the sky above, wishing on something that for all he knew, wasn't even there.

"My parents...Yes, I suppose they did show me. My ah...my mother and father are both patterned very much like the stars and so I think that made them both very connected with the stars." He thought if his parents...the image of Adelle and Shihab coming to his mind, the only parents he had ever known. It was almost too easy to forget sometimes, that he had other parents. Parents who now were nothing more than flickers of shadow, made up of shrouded mystery and long forgotten memories of a time when he was still buried safely in his basket. Parents whose lives had not ended with peace, surrounded by loved ones, but in screams of pain at the claws of a monster. His eyes clouded for a moment, but he blinked, shaking his head to clear his thoughts of the memory. It agitated him, and there was no need for that now. He realized though, painting the image of his starry parents might make her wonder why he was so different in comparison. "I am adopted, you see. My mother took in my basket after she found it abandoned. I was raised by winds, so my kind are more like strangers to me than anything," he said with a bit of a laugh. Despite his past, it was true that he couldn't have asked for a better mother, Adelle had loved him more than he was ever able to comprehend as a small child.

He smiled as she called him beautiful and then laughed lightly. Truthfully he did not mind, he was rather flattered that she found him so. He had never really seen himself as beautiful, or anything of the sort. For all she was emasculating him, he didn't really care, he had never been the type of stallion with a macho ego or reputation to defend. And he liked the sound of her laugh, it had also been a long time since he had heard those sounds, and hers was gentle, genuine. Alex looked up and grinned at her. "Well thank you, I am flattered you think so. Especially coming from a beautiful mare such as yourself." Her talkativeness or bluntness didn't bother him either and to be honest he rather liked the sound of her voice as well. The silence he had been walking in so long grew old quickly, and the few passers by he stopped to talk with really were not enough for him to feel like he had really had a conversation. This was the first soquili in a long time that had really taken time to speak with him, and he found himself enjoying it a lot. "Well I assure you I do not mind your approaching at all, it's refreshing actually, talking with someone who does not have barriers inhibiting them. Though introductions are nice sometimes if you would like the name of who you are speaking with," he chuckled. "I am Alexiel, or Alex, if you wish."

Ainn was no expert when it came to the feeling of others, or emotions in general for that matter, but she could venture to guess that this stallion had a struggle occurring internally. As he spoke of his star marked parents she again turned her gaze skyward, admiring the balls of burning gas that were so out of reach to her kind. Out of the corner of her eye she gazed again at his wings, wondering how high exactly he could fly. High enough to dance among the clouds seemed quite plausible but reaching the stars, was that possible? Her attention turned from his wings to his face as he spoke of being adopted; though her mind was bustling with questions she felt they were inappropriate for this moment. The word abandonment rang in her mind and caused a small p***k of an unpleasant sensation in her chest yet she knew not why, it was only a word after all. “I am sorry for your past; it sounds like a fairly unhappy one.” As soon as the words left her maw she found herself regretting them. Of course it wouldn’t be happy; she didn’t need to confirm that. I an attempt to salvage the situation she quickly started talking again. “Your adoptive parents sound like a very kind couple indeed, not to mention physically wondrous.” Though she attempted to restrain herself she couldn’t keep all questions to herself, it was not in her nature. “It must have seemed quite difficult for you to grow up with a species so different from your own?” The censor Edana always mentioned only went so far when it came to this mare. She couldn’t help but to laugh as she dipped her head in embarrassment. “I suppose that is a might too personal for a first meeting, I do not mean to pry.”

At the mention of her being a beautiful mare Ainn was surprised by an internal warmth that suddenly came over her. This stallion had been the first beside her father she had ever spoken to in a social setting on her own, it was pleasant to say the least. “Th-thank you.” It was uncharacteristic of Fearthainn to choke or stumble on words but never before had she been called beautiful. In an attempt to hide whatever flush had come over her she turned her head to the side as though observing something in the distance. Her astonishment only furthered as he stated that her lack of personal barriers, and what would otherwise be considered rude behavior, was refreshing. “You are quite unlike others I have met Alex.” His name rolled off of her tongue sweetly, it was a name she enjoyed speaking aloud for the sound was marvelous. “My family often comments on how impolite and brash I am in a social setting.” She said with a laugh. “It is quite refreshing for me to be able to act the way I normally would with someone without becoming a nuisance, I quite enjoy it.”
