It had started out like any other day - sure, she woke up to find that there were no berries around to act as breakfast, but the clovers glowing under a tree were delicious too. Humming a tuneless melody to herself, the Usdia mare trotted across the wild open plains, fascinated with how different the fields were as compared to her forest home... For one, in the forest, it was impossible to see the horizon since there would always be a tree in the way of the view.
Hiking up a hill to get a better look at the seemingly endless fields, Grace panted a little; she was getting a little giddy... And despite the hot summer sun beating down mercilessly on her back, she shivered periodically from the cold. By the time she was at the top of the hill, the Usdia had a splitting headache.
"Help..." She groaned, her usually sunny disposition vanishing as she stumbled over her own feet, falling to the ground with a 'thud'. Feeling tired all of a sudden, the female couldn't find the energy needed to pull herself up; instead, she laid there, motionless on the grass as she muttered for help, hoping for someone to pass by.

((Just to let you know: In her "wandering" timeline she's just leaving the forest to explore the plains, after meeting Wenopa near the forest...the rp hasn't gotten very far yet. So I won't go into any details.)) The plains were hotter today. The sun beat down on the poor rosy mare's backside. A slight stinging sensation told Ostara that she was beginning to burn. The tough usdia just shrugged it off and carried on with her exploration of such vast and relatively flat lands. Now filled with determination and vigor, she was off on the search once more.
The dry grass crunched under her hooves as she moved. It was the only sound that day. Even the great hawks that generally hunted in this region were taking refuge in the shade. Ostara moved forward despite the strange silence until her ears picked up a small noise. She stopped and listened, her ears twitching forward and back. There it was again! A meek voice in the distance.
It was difficult to say who or what had made the sound, but the direction was clear - straight ahead. She didn't waste any time and hurried. Within moments she cleared the small hill to find an odd splash of color against the yellow of the plains grass. On closer inspection it was a...cranberry, there was no other color to describe her vivid pelt, colored usdia. She lay almost crumpled on the ground, never a good sign in such awful heat.
She nudged the mare. "Are you alright?" She raised her voice hoping to possibly wake her. "Hello?"
After seeming to receive no response, Ostara looked to the sky. This mare needed water but how would she be able to bring it to her so far away from the river. She closed her eyes and forced her mind to think quickly. Back in the forest, Wenopa had explained the many uses of the plant life...and there was one plant in particular that stuck out. It was a water-based plant, storing water during dry spells and called the plains home.
It was a long shot, but maybe she could find it. "I'll be back soon, just hold on," she told the usdia even though she knew she couldn't hear her.

Grace thought that she heard hoof steps in the distance, and tried to move her body to signal to them. However, when she realized that she didn't have the energy to do so, the mare tried to open her eyes instead, just to check if she was right... And failed at that too. It was a few seconds later when she felt vibrations on the ground followed by a nudge; part of her was relieved at the company and the fact that someone had found her.
She heard the stranger asking something, but her brain was unable to process the questions. Anyway, even if she heard the questions, she would still be unable to respond. Then, Grace heard the words 'back soon' and 'hold on' in the same voice, and felt assured that she had found the help that was needed.

((Sorry, muse momentarily died on me!))
Ostara set off on her new goal, to find the elusive plant. She trotted along, swishing her head every which way scanning the open fields. When that proved fruitless, she found a small hill to perch on. It gave her just a bit more of a view and luckily, something green stood out. The mare's heart filled with hope as she rushed to the spot.
It was so small and young, hardly enough to truly help but it was the best she could do. Ostara nipped the stem and carried it in her mouth as she struggled to retrace her steps. Her wandering had put her further away than she realized. 'Stara closed her eyes and thought back to when she found the mare. She remembered the hill being quite large and more to the right, so she went with her gut.
Her instincts led her back to the large incline. She walked over to the still mare. And at first glance it appeared she still hadn't moved. Ostara bent her front legs to kneel beside the cranberry Usdia. She dropped the limp flora next to her muzzle. Nothing happened.
Something was suppose to happen. A smell. Ostara thought back to her time in the forest and the words of the Cerynei. He had told her to crush the stem, its smell was enough to wake a hibernating bear. Then once the soquili was awake, its leaves or needles would serve to restore some energy. Ostara stood and raised her hoof, bringing it down to snap the twig-like stem in two.

{Mine died too. >.<}
"Ugh..." The female moaned as she stirred, twitching a little. Something strong seemed to flood the inside of her nose, forcing her to open her eyes despite her fatigue. As she did, the bright light caused her to quickly shut them again; she blinked, taking time to readjust to the light. As the fuzziness gradually faded, Grace found herself staring at... A sort of plant? It was placed near her muzzle...
Gathering her energy, she shifted her glance, and saw another Usdia mare standing nearby... Was she the one who was talking to her just now? Or was that a dream? Maybe this is a dream too, but do dreams hurt this badly? She opened her mouth to talk, but only managed to mutter something inaudible. Her throat felt dry and it hurt to even to try to talk.

The usdia began to wake and Ostara felt relief flow through her. The cranberry mare appeared groggy and parched. She quickly moved to push the plant towards her mouth, she hoped the mare would be able to chew on her own accord. "Eat the plant," she told her in a gentle voice, "It will help."

Grace wanted to reply, to say 'Okay', but her voice refused to work. Instead, she did as she was told, hoping that actions do indeed speak louder than words. She reached out with her muzzle, and bit into the plant. At once, she felt moisture going down her throat - it was like magic. Every time she chewed, she could feel the liquid energizing her, giving her life. By the time the plant was in her stomach, the cranberry usdia felt much better, and no longer in as much pain.
Lifting her head, or rather, attempting to lift her head, she smiled, "Thank... You..." She managed to mutter, her voice hoarse and it felt like sandpaper was rubbing against her voice box, but at least she could talk again.

Ostara smiled warmly at the usdia as she ate the plant. She felt her heart fill up with the emotion. She gazed down at the mare, "We should get you up and head for shade. The heat is just awful today." The stinging sensation returned quickly and with greater force this time as if on cue. She winced. As far as the eye could see, the plains were open and barren of any trees. The closest shade was near the mountains, north, or the forest, east. She turned back to the usdia. "Do you need help up?"

Grace managed to nod, and slowly scrambled up on all fours. Like a drunk, she stumbled a little, unable to stand still for prolonged amounts of time. She managed to maneuver herself to stand beside Ostara, leaning on her for some support. She gave a small smile, "Let... Go..."

It was quite a struggle to carry the usdia's extra weight but Ostara limped along. She tried to head for the direction of the forest, hoping to find more plants to heal their ailments. The blinding sun and excruciating heat began to take its toll on the rosy mare, now red enough to be considered an apple. Her legs wobbled with each step but she plodded on, determined to find safety in this abnormal heat.
It felt like hours had passed as they continued their trek, and when they hadn't stumbled across the river between the plains and forest, Ostara knew something was wrong. She raised her head up and looked around. In the distance was a vague shape, it reminded her of the mountain's foothills. Maybe all hope is not lost!, thought 'Stara.
With renewed strength at the last glimpse of hope, the small mare trotted onwards. The extra weight from her new companion now manageable. More time passed, but Ostara never noticed, and they were finally in the rocky foothills. The mountains casted a shadow over the area, possibly the reason why it was scarce of flora. She dragged herself and the usdia to a large boulder, setting her down on it as gently as possible. Then she collapsed beside her. "We should be fine now," she huffed slightly out of breath, "And I don't think we've...been properly introduced. ...I'm Ostara."
After all the two had been through and they still didn't know each other's names. Ostara couldn't help but laugh at the little slice of irony.

She was glad that there was someone there to support her, for she felt like she was carrying twice her own weight on her back. Every step she took felt like she had trekked on forever, and the only thing that kept her going was the feeling of the other Usdia beside her; she gave her the strength to walk and the determination to find some shade. After all, it wouldn't be good to faint again, especially since the other must be tired as well.
Grace had no idea where they were headed to; her eye sight was still rather blurry, like there was a screen blocking her eyes. With the sun beating down mercilessly on her back, whatever moisture she got from the plant soon became useless. Then, just as she thought she couldn't go on much longer, the stranger set her down in a rather cool place... Was this the shade that they were after?
"Thanks..." She managed to mutter with a small smile, panting rather heavily. Without lifting her head due to exhaustion, she continued in between each breath, "Name... Grace..."

Worry was apparent on the rosy mare's features. Worry for her companion and herself, she could feel the heat taking its toll more and more. Ostara peered at her company. "Grace..." she repeated. "That's a pretty name."
She looked about the rocky area hoping to find some water close by. There was none, but all was not lost. 'Stara recognized the area as the same trail she had taken to the small river that flowed by the forest. She glanced back at Grace, she didn't want to leave her here. But she was not up to dragging the usdia all that way either. Even if she did leave for water, how would she bring it back. So many questions were left spinning about her head.
Her voice finally broke the silence. "There's a small river down that way," she motioned towards the east. "It is a distance, but it won't be too long. Do you think you can walk?" Ostara knew she could not carry Grace's full weight as before but perhaps she could lend a shoulder.

She would have blushed at the compliment if not for the fact that her pelt was already naturally red and that under her pelt, she was already flushed due to the heat. Panting, the mare tried her best to listen as Ostara continued to speak, concentrating on the pale-colored mare instead of her own dicomfort. However, as she was feeling both too sick and tired to open her eyes, Grace missed the direction that the other was gesturing towards. Despite that, she decided to trust the stranger, seeing that she had taken her so far.
Nodding weakly in reply to the question, Grace offered a small smile as thanks; Ostara was trying her best to help her, so she felt that she should try her best too. Summoning whatever was remaining of her energy, the cranberry mare pulled herself up to stand on all fours slowly and rather painfully, concentrating on keeping herself off the ground - although it was normally a simple action, it now took a lot more effort.

Grace looked purely exhausted but she nodded and stood. Ostara was quick to help prop her up, with her shoulder and side against hers. "We'll go slow," she reassured her.
She took small slow steps - not only for the sick mare but for her as well. Her legs ached with each step, and as they moved further her legs wobbled dangerously. 'Stara tried to keep her mind off of the pain and began to talk. "I had actually found the river not too long after leaving the mountains. It's really the perfect place shaded by the near-by forest, and the water isn't too deep."
Ostara glanced at her companion worried over her health. Water was ultimately what they needed but after some time they would need more. She just hoped that she could find the medicinal herbs that would help both regain their strength.
In the distance she could hear a distinct sound of trickling water. They were close! She quickened her pace. "We're almost there, Grace! Just a little more..."
