Buena Vista has finally put one of Hayao Miyazaki's fantastic animated features in regular theatrical release! whee It was really hard to find them in limited release. Ponyo is so much fun! It's innocent and magical and humorous and beautiful to look at! If you need to feel better, find Ponyo and go watch it!

Saw the trailer... looks interesting. Seems aimed at a lower age than Howl's Moving Castle. Still has that very classical Miyazaki look to it. Not too keen on the voice acting, from the snippets I heard. If I get it on DVD, I'll probably watch it in Japanese instead.

Disney channel. GAH. Interviews/promos are everywhere.
Voices of two primary characters, apparently, are the little siblings of the Jonas brothers and Miley Cyrus. confused
Who I have never seen before doing anything ever.
I want to go see it because it's Miyazaki. smile

It really does look good, but yeah... I'm a bit worried about the voice acting as well.
Oh well, still looks like a good story with good animation, still gonna see it, just maybe not in theaters.
(Unless somebody I know whats to go with me? heart )

The voice acting didn't bother me. The little kids sounded very natural to me. And even if it is more for little kids, it doesn't do it in a saccharinated way that would get on an adult's nerves. It's just refreshingly innocent and you chuckle a lot and get the socks charmed off you by Ponyo and her sisters.
As usual there is an environmental message, but it's more in the background--there's a lot of trash in the water in the harbor, and Ponyo getting stuck in a jar is how she met Sosuke. He pries her out, puts her in a pail of water (she's a fish at this point) and feeds her part of his sandwich. She goes crazy for ham. lol Maybe we can mark her hyperactive, noisy behavior up to the sodium nitrates in sandwich meats? Her Dad was appalled when she refused her algae meal & demanded ham.

Torakame: xd Okay okay, I'll see what I can do about that.
And Whatsit, it's more that just it's so Disney-fied with the voice acting, but I know I'll watch it and get caught up with the characters and probably like it. smile

My friend wants to hang out with me! whee And ditto on that. I'll whine and complain about it now, but once I actually see the movie I'll probably think its the best thing since cheesecake icecream. Disney has just been making me very sad, recently...

Just remember--Disney didn't MAKE this movie. They're only the US distributors. Don't deprive yourself of the chance to see a Miyazaki movie on the big screen because of a Disney prejudice!
Look at it this way....we need to show Disney that TRADITIONAL ANIMATION IS STILL AWESOME AND WILL STILL DRAW BOX OFFICE!!

Doctor_Whatsit Look at it this way....we need to show Disney that TRADITIONAL ANIMATION IS STILL AWESOME AND WILL STILL DRAW BOX OFFICE!! Has Disney completely given up on traditional animation? I know they did the computer-animated 'Bolt' last year, which was actually surprisingly entertaining. But now that Pixar is back with Disney, wouldn't it be redundant to have the Disney and Pixar groups both making computer animated stuff? Actually, now that I think of it, I could have sworn I saw a trailer for a new cartoon movie by Disney when I went to see 'Up'. I vaguely remember it had a frog and some girl who looked black.

Heck yeah! Several years ago, Disney shut down their traditional animation studios and got rid of all the animators except for the ones who dug in & learned to do their craft on computers, such as Glen Keane (animator of the Beast, Aladdin & other fantastic characters).
The last traditional-animation feature they released was "Home on the Range"--a feeble last gasp that should have gone straight to DVD. crying
We've been boycotting their features ever since. But Miyazaki is NOT Disney, and as I said, Disney needs to get it through their stupid skulls that traditional animation can still make it! Disney was one of the great pioneers of high-quality animation, for crying out loud! scream

As I recall, after Disney started doing traditional animation again with The Little Mermaid, they had a pretty solid run of relatively decent movies, but after a while they seemed to get a bit formulaic (or at least that was my impression). I like to blame Aladdin, because after the success of Robin Williams' Genie character, it seemed like most of the other Disney movies got infested with similarly obnoxious comic-relief sidekicks. After looking around a bit, it seemed like Disney's switch to computer animation in 2004 coincided with difficulties in negotiations between Disney and Pixar, so I suspect part of the motivation may have been to tell Pixar 'hey, if you guys don't like our terms, we'll just make our own movies'. It doesn't appear that any of those movies were all that good, unfortunately. Anyway, yeah, I found the trailer for that new animated Disney movie. It's The Princess and the Frog. Getting back to Ponyo... how does it stack up compared to other Miyazaki movies? Did I mention I wanted Nausicca to die when she was about to be stampeded by a horde of enraged jumbo beetles?
