Have any of you ever gone? Im just looking for someone to talk to whos experienced going with some tips, stories or advice. I'm seriously thinking about going. I live in the states so its gonna cost an arm and a leg x_x but one of the first bands they announced was immortal. Just gathering information at this point.

Never been there myself, though I'd love to go someday. It's just too expensive a proposition for me at this point, and I wouldn't really want to go by myself. xp This year's lineup was mostly crap, though.

Well, I've never been to Wacken. I've only been to Dynamo, when this was still on.

I've never been, wouldn't mind going, even if the line up sucked, but I'd prefer if it were better.

Of the '09 lineup, the only bands I would've been interested in seeing there would be Amon Amarth (eh, maybe), Borknagar, Cathedral, In Flames (if they stuck to a pre-2000 setlist), and Nevermore. Slim pickings.

Slim pickings. I wouldve gone just for borknagar. At New England Metal Fest two years ago i saw a guy with an empiricism shirt.. and i offered him 50 bucks and the shirt i was wearing for it. He said if he hadnt got it in the czech republic he mightve gone for it =P

I want to see ASP and Pain the most, but I would have went for: ASP In Flames Anthrax Amon Amarth Testament Pain Korpiklaani In Extremo Turisas Enslaved Gwar Einherjer Trouble Pentagram Running Wild
Bold = who i'd want to see the most, for the music Italic = bands I like alright, but they put on a fantastic show so its worth seeing them the rest I just wouldn't mind seeing.

I've never been to Wacken, eventhough it's not that far away. It's just we get only a few hundred tickets here on sale at most, and they go within days (and I don't even know when they come on sale here!), so I've never got them. And then there's the matter of flights and busses and whatnot and I'm not sure how I'd manage in a tent with hundreds of thousands of people for days on end.
Also, I'm usually working when Wacken's on. And most of the bigger bands that play at Wacken, also play at our local Tuska festival, which only costs me the ticket and 3-days worth of train tickets. So, I don't have to go that far to see big bands anyway. Of course there's always bands at Wacken that aren't at Tuska that I'd like to see, but maybe they'll come here someday and I'll see them then. I'm not such a big gig-going person that I'd fuss a lot about not seeing a few of my favourite bands playing, even if they did it in Finland.

I had to block out the memory of it from my mind... emo

If I were as close to it as you, I'd go. ninja @Rotting Gnarl: Youtube doesn't do bands justice to be honest. I've seen some really good performances by band live, then watched videos of that band on Youtube and on Youtube they seemed terrible but in person they were great.

I can see a lot of reason to what Mana is saying. It would be even more of a hassle going there from the States, especially considering how difficult it is to get a ticket in Europe. I think if I ever do go to WOA, it'll be as part of a larger sightseeing trip to Germany. All of that time and money and discomfort just to see a few bands? Not worth it on its own. I've always wanted to visit Germany, and attending WOA would be a perfect way to finish a trip. But by itself? Not worth it.
