He was sleepy. Yes, he was sure of that - he, Badru, was sleepy. Grumbling softly as he walked, Badru suddenly stopped in his stride, lowering first his hind to the ground, then his front, until eventually he was laying on the ground as the sun dropped down behind the land. It was getting dark - dark was the time for sleep, correct? Yes...yes, it was sleeptime.
With a small, gruff noise, he turned to his beloved friend, "Koth, is it time to sleep?"
Koth wasn't particularly tired - unlike Badru, who had a large body, his was only small, and as such he found it easier to keep himself fit and healthy. Badru was...known to not be the most competent at keeping himself fit. The snake slithered along beside his friend the whole day, as they travelled from place to place. It was a hard life - never knew where they were going, or what to expect. But it was the life they'd always known, and Koth was content.
His friend sat, and Koth knew it was time to rest. He smiled warmly, wriggling up to badru's face and settling there, curling around himself with his head poking out of the top.
"We can sleep, Badru, or we can talk. Which would you prefer?"
Badru blinked his eyes somewhat drearily, confused at why his eyelids felt so heavy. They did his every night, but why did they get more heavy? More weight must be added, was the only logical answer - but where from? It was a matter he'd puzzled over countless times before, and which he never seemed to be able to find an answer for. It was troubling him now, and as such he suddenly found himself no longer wishing to sleep.
"Koth," he spoke, pronouncing the snake's name quite deliberately, "Why are my eyelids so heavy?"
Koth looked up to Badru expectently, his smile warm and inviting. A lot of others dismissed badru as being dim - and in all honesty, yes, he was. But he was more than that. He might not have been the brightest bulb in the box but he was interesting in his own ways, with things he said and did. And Koth owed his life to his dear friend - he'd nver leave him.
The question took him aback a little, Koth blinking several times before smiling once more, a chuckle even breaking through the mouth, "Why, Badru, because you are tired, of course. Tiredness makes your eyelids heavy."
Badru frowned, and you could almost see his mind, with the dusty clogs slowly beginning to turn. His question hadn't been answered, and this only confused him further. Because you were tired...
"But Koth," he continued, confusion clear on his face as he watched his beloved friend with wide, curious eyes, "Why does tiredness make them heavy? Isn't there something like...on them, that makes them heavy?"

The snake smiled, inwardly amused by his good friend's confusion. Reaching his tail out he patted the lion's front paw in a reassuring manner, shuffling forwards a little before curling up once more, with his head poking out of the top with a warm smile and bright eyes. "No, there's nothing on them. Simply, when you are tired your brain wants you to close your eyes, and go to sleep. So your brain tells your eyelids that they are heavy, and you believe them and go to sleep."
Another smile, as the snake tilted his head, "Does that make sense, hmm?"
Badru watched his friend closely, glancing down to his paw as Koth patted it, watching his paw instead for a good few moments, before back up to the snake again just as he finished speaking. His brain? But didn't that mean that he, Badru, was playing tricks on Badru? ...How did that work? Oh, his head hurt now!
"I...b-but I don't understand, Koth!" Badru whined, flopping down so his head was in his paws, a childish pout on his maw.
With a sigh, Koth uncoiled himself for the third time, slithering forwards and nudging Badru slightly with the tip of his nose. With a little wriggled and thanks to his small size, he was soon able to get underneath Badru's chin, and curl himself around his friend's face in a reassuring manner. He smiled, bringing his face up so Badru could see him without straining himself.
"There are a lot of things in life we don't understand, Badru. You can either chose to accept that fact, and get on with your life, or you can spend years and years searching for an answer, but never finding one."
A slow grumble came from Badru, the lion not exactly irritated as his friend wriggled underneath his chin, but not happy. He half wanted to go to sleep, but on the other hand he was enjoying the company of his familiar, and did enjoy talking to him. It wasn't something he got to do often, since a comfortable silence was most commonly adopted when they were walking.
"I think..." he began, after his friend had spoken, pausing to think for a moment, "...I'm going to accept it, Koth. Is that the right thing to do?"
Koth smiled brightly, nodding in an exaggerated fashion so it couldn't be confused for anything else. He lowered his head, resting it on Badru's paw, shuffling around a little until he was comfortable before sitting there, staring off into the distance. "Yes, I believe it is the right decision, Badru. There's no point wasting your life looking for answers to questions that don't have any significant impact on you."
He paused, silence enveloping the savannah for a good while, before Koth finally spoke up again, "Would you like to go to sleep now, Badru? The sun's setting, so it's nearly time for bed."
The gruff lion enjoyed the silence, perfectly content with his friend's answer. Silences were common between the two, but they were never awkward or uncomfortable. More a companionable silence, in which both appreciated the time to gather their thoughts.
When his friend spoke again, badru tilted his head so he could look down at him, managed a sweet, child-like smile. "Yes. Yes, I would like to, Koth."
Ah, bless him. Badru was such a simple lion, child-like at times, but large and intimidating on the outside. Many wouldn't understand him, and might label him as a big, stupid brute, but Koth knew better. And behind all of it, there was the most important thing - Badru was a really, really good friend.
"Sweet dreams, Badru."
Badru closed his eyes, allowing himself to be enveloped by the darkness, ears twitching as he listened to the sounds of the savannah. At his friend's voice a smile spread over his maw, a purr beginning to rumble in his throat. "Sweet dreams, Koth."
