Alyssum half-sighed as she trotted around the edge of her forest home. The wind was already beginning to change, chilling her more than it had just a few days previous. Any day now... the greens of the trees would begin to morph to bright golds, oranges, and reds, the grass browning and becoming sparse as the seasons shifted. At least this year she would be ready for the change. She knew that the grass would return, the trees would brighten to their original tones, but... it did not make it any easier. At least this time she had a chance to say goodbye.

She stretched out her legs, enjoying the feel of sunshine against her dappled hide, and a content sigh escaped her black-tipped muzzle, even if the words were not pleasant. "Goodbye, summer sun." Her purple eyes turned to the grass, to the few remaining purple clover, and dipped down to capture one between her teeth. Chewing and swallowing the treat, she repeated her farewell. "Goodbye, sweet flower."

Unable to resist plucking up a second bloom, she lifted her head and chewed, considering what aspect of summer she should bid farewell to next.

The change of seasons was indeed mourned by some, but also welcomed by others. The stallion relished the chance to stretch his long legs, humming low in his throat to accompany the rankling screech of cicadas, joining them in their last few hours. But new songs would swell as the buzz of insects and cheerful, chirping birds faded, like the sound of a chilled breath whispering among fallen leaves that crunched and crackled with each step. Rhythms and tunes were everywhere--but only those who listened would hear them. So many Soquili were too busy to stop and smells the roses. Kasthem simply just didn't see the rush.

Though his shaggy locks obscured most of his vision, the unicorn had a lazy sort of saunter to his step as he wove through the trees, clearly unhindered by the lack of sight. There was a cheerful sort of chime whenever he ducked his head, the tiny bells woven within his hair rattling to-and-fro as though to add to his melody. Dumb luck would have it that he would unknowingly pass by the mare such as she was bidding her farewell, sleek ears twitching at her words until he paused.

"Good bye, gentle voices," He mused, his voice deep as he struggled to weave it into something more rhythmic. "Good bye, warm winds and insect-songs... But hello to falling leaves, to winter's arriving song~ And hello, to you." He tossed his head some, but his eyes seemed permanently hidden underneath his hair. "You could make that into a nice poem." He said idly, another hum stirring in his chest before he craned his neck down to pluck a clover for himself.

What was that sound? Brown ears turned to the side at it, something vaguely reminscent of birds but without being high-pitched or repetitive. And then there was a slight metallic sound to accompany it, whatever it was. Turning her head, the mare spotted the black-and-white stallion and observed his approach with curiousity. He had a horn squarely in the middle of his forehead, striped in the same monochromatic scheme as the rest of him; she had seen one similiar in the past, but Cormorant had also had an additional set of horns, fangs, and feathered wings... all bits that this newcomer lacked. His tail was curious too, thicker than her own with a puff on the end. A new type of Soquili? Her cream tail swished in excitement, and she would have stepped forward to greet him had he not spoken first.

Alyssum's nostrils flared, her white-blazed head jerking up. Was he... was he MOCKING her? Her farewells had been intended for no one's ears but her own and those of the forest, and if this horned-creature thought he could come in and judge her for that, then he was certainly mistaken! However, her flare of temper quickly cooled at his greetings, not just to her, but to the coming seasons. He was talking to the forest too; she just happened to be nearby. She nodded her head in a similiar brief greeting, not wanting to disturb his eating.

However, the deep thrum that vibrated from the stallion distracted her. It was the sound from before, only louder and deeper; it had been him making the call all along? The slight movement of the beading around his throat seemed to indicate she was correct, so she finally asked, "What's that... and does it hurt?"

If he'd noticed her sudden fit of temper, the stallion chewed thoughtfully on the sweet little bloom, enjoying the flavor that spread across his tongue. His tail swept to and fro, swatting lazily at his flanks to keep the biting bugs at bay. For all intents and purposes, he looked as though he had hardly a care in the world right now. Of course, it was nice when she chose to reply, and his long muzzle shifted downward as though to investigate whatever she was speaking of.

"This?" He offered as he idly nosed at the necklace around his neck, causing the bells to chirp once more. "A gift. From a two-legger. Very thoughtful for their kind. And these," Kasthem shook his head a little so the bells can sound, "Came with." He paused for a moment before remembering the last bit of her question. "It doesn't hurt. I always forget it's there until something reminds me." There was a faint grin at that, almost absent-minded.

"I like you." He decided. "Most don't stop to think of the changing seasons. My name's Kasthem." Silence while he chewed and, eventually, swallowed. "Are you sad that winter comes?"

Two leggers? Alyssum's curiousity peaked, as she had never seen anything that moved on two legs aside from birds, and from what she had seen birds stole things that were shiny, not give them away. Still, she listened to the tinkle the small, metallic balls made and shook her head. That wasn't the deep, rumbly sound at all...

She lifted her hoof to step forward, to show him exactly what she meant, but his words picked up again and made her pause. Alyssum relaxed as the stallion continued speaking, easily able to keep up with the jumps in conversation. He was simple, direct, and having met other Soquili who were complex and used their words to shroud themselves in mystery, she was thankful that she could relate to him within her comfort level. "I like you too, Kasthem. I'm Alyssum, and... I am a little sad when winter comes. At least it's better than last time; I didn't know what to expect and got really upset at the plants dying."

Satisfied that this more than answered the question, she continued her movement and indicated the stallion's chest with a toss of her head. "No, not those. They don't make the deep sound... it sounds like it's coming from there, though."

There was a thoughtful nod at that before he tossed his head once more, valiantly trying to see... but again, not seeming ruffled when his attempt failed. "It is sad... This is the best time to hear the songs of nature. Everything's so full of life. But, it's sort of a miracle in itself that they can all come back when the warmth returns--and with them, their music."

Though he was puzzled for a moment at her gesture, a surprisingly broad grin would tug at his face as he suddenly grasped her meaning. "Ahh, music of my own. Listen." He had no issues with 'performing' in front of her, his chest soon filled with the low, deep sound that soon had swelled into his throat. It was a low, but rich hum, and he let it rise and fall for a moment before it died away.

"You try." He offered, still grinning as though he was suddenly a colt. "It's like talking, but without words. Just the noise."

Yes, that sound! The chocolate mare resisted the urge to lay her head against the strange Soquili's chest to find out exactly what was going on while that sound appeared. His own music, he had called it. Not that... she was quite sure just what "music" was, but if it all sounded like this, it couldn't be too bad.

Her tail flicked in excitement when invited to try for herself, "Really? I can do that!"

But why was he smiling so big? The way he said it made it seem easy enough... but maybe there was a trick to it that he hadn't mentioned. A friendly challenge, then, one deserving of friendly competition. Clearing her throat, Alyssum concentrated on the feel of her vocal chords moving without speaking. However, the resulting sound didn't match the one Kasthem gave... not at all! It was higher, softer. What was she doing wrong?

Keeping her teeth clenched, she tried again, but the sound came out the same, similar to her voice, yes, but flat and unappealing in contrast to the painted Soquili before her. She turned stubborn purple eyes up to Kasthem, a hint of exasperation in her tone, "It... doesn't sound right!
PostPosted: Sat Aug 08, 2009 10:24 pm

His tail had began to swish at the note she offered in turn, faintly bobbing his head as he listened. Of course, it unexpectedly broke off, and Kasthem tilted his head slightly as though he could hear the reason why. It started again, and stopped just as quickly, and he could hear the faint irritation running through her tones. "Doesn't sound right? It sounded lovely. Go on, try it again--and hold it this time!"

After a moment more of considering, he added, "It's just for fun, too, so don't stress out about it." And then he waited idly, ready to lend his voice to hers. Nothing wrong with a little harmonizing to past the time, particularly when a girl who wanted to learn was attached to it!

"If you clench your teeth that hard, you might hurt 'em." He idly nosed at her cheek as though that would help her loosen up some. "Just relaaax. Try it one more time, and we'll see if we can make something real nice come out." He was looking forward to it.

It had most certainly not sounded lovely, at least not to Alyssum's ears. Compared to the depth and resonance of the pitch she sought to mimic, her own sound was just... off. On the other hand, Kasthem had no reason to lie to her, and if it had sounded wrong to him, it at least wasn't unpleasant enough for him to tell her not to try again.

The additional comments that the excercise was more for fun than a challenge helped her relax, and she took the nosing of her cheek as a motivator to loosen her jaw. Closing her eyes, the mare repeated the process of a few moments before, this time holding out that higher-pitched sound as the paint stallion had asked and taking the time to listen.

It... sort of matched her voice, as Kasthem's sound matched his. Maybe... maybe it was supposed to sound different? And... she was doing it right?

There it was; a nice, soft sound that his voice could wrap around, the lower, more bass-like support so her higher tones could stand out quite clearly. The stallion's tail twitched as though trying to set a time for the beat, and after a moment of experimenting with how the sounds could rise and fall together, Kasthem allowed his to gently die off.

"See? Wasn't that good?" He seemed quite pleased with the results, that broad grin again in place while he shifted some, lowering his head as though to peer at the mare through his hair. "Sounds better, doesn't it? I prefer company, so I'll miss all the little bugs out here who like to lend their voices."

A stretch, and he gave his head a hard enough shake to send the bells chirping in alarm. "You should hum more often, practice some--it'd be a shame to not hear your voice again." Came the sage, if laid back advice before he took the opportunity to snatch another blossom.

Alyssum still wasn't certain she was performing correctly, and her concentration on her own sound broke when she heard Kasthem's thrum join her own. She almost shrank back into silence, not because she felt any embarassment or unease but because the two sounds twining together... sounded good. Different. Was this... the "music" thing that the stallion kept mentioning? If so, why hadn't she ever heard of it before now or heard anyone else making it?

While she kept her tone steady, the painted male varied his, creating different sounds, different tugs in her emotions, but all worthy of curving her ears to try and catch more. Then, it ended, replaced by compliments, instructions, that small tinkling sound and a quick snack. The mare threw in her two cents, curiousity fully unleashed now and still wrapped in the seeming magic of this... thing called music. "It sounds better when its both together, but maybe if I practice more I can be fancier with it. If more voices join in... does the sound get better and better? And who do you sing with, when all the bugs go away?"

Chomp, chew, chew. "I don't see why you couldn't." Kasthem agreed pleasantly at that, seeming to like the idea. "Then we could experiment more. I think it would be fun." He pondered over her other question more slowly, having no need to rush for an answer. "I don't know," Came the frank reply. "I haven't tried it with many people before. Sometimes, simple is best. It might just grow loud and irritating if there was too much sound."

Stretching out his legs some, an amused note thrummed in his chest for a moment. "Myself, mostly. Sometimes the wind, if there's a breeze. Sometimes the river, if it feels like burbling loud enough. Nature is always willing to sing with me, even if most Soquili aren't." That seemed to make him grin for some reason. "But you're connected with the flowers by name, aren't you? So I think that's why it didn't bother you. You pay attention to the little things, and that's good." It was a pleasant realization, after meeting so many who always had their heads up in the clouds. Being grounded wasn't so bad!

The mare's nose wrinkled slightly in distaste. The idea that 'music' could be made unpleasant was... well, disturbing. It would be like going flower picking and only finding bushes filled with thorns. "That doesn't sound good. I guess we're lucky mine doesn't make yours sound awful."

Alyssum blinked in surprise at Kasthem's words but nodded to show he had been correct. Not too many recognized her connection to the flowers without her telling them, and the observation coming seemingly from nowhere "I'm not sure that the plants and the forests count as 'little' things... but maybe you're right. I see things differently than other people most of the time. But... I guess everyone might see things a little differently? It's what makes people interesting."

"Simple is best." He only repeated with a lazy sort of grin before pausing to listen. "I don't think so, either. But to some, what do they care when all the green withers away? It'll come back. They don't stop to think about it..." A sigh then, but he seemed more content than exasperated.

"You're observant. Tell me, what do you see that you think others don't?" There was no challenge or scorn in his words; he was quite frankly interested. She was different. How, he hadn't exactly been able to pinpoint... so perhaps she knew better than he. It was her mind, after all! Amused with himself, the stallion began to hum low and deep in his throat, filling up the silence with sound so he at least had something to listen to while he waited.

Observant. A word she had never heard used to describe herself, and the question that followed required instrospection. Alyssum wasn't much good at introspection, but she tried to think of an answer that would satisfy both herself and the now once-more humming stallion. "I... just see what's there. I try to understand it and name it, but mostly I just watch it. Maybe that's why I see things differently?" It seemed a reasonable explanation to her, at any rate.

Then, since they seemed to have stumbled on the point where asking questions wasn't rude, she asked one of her own, one that had been nagging her. "Why is your tail different? It looks like it'd be hard to hit bugs away with, since the hair part is so small..."
