I have a question for the Guild.

Well, I lied, I have several.

What is your defination of a Condinment?

What is your defination of a Spice?

And with those out of the way, which catogory does sugar and salt fit into?

I have been taught that a Condinment is something you put on an already cooked dish to improve it while a Spice is something you cook into the dish.

I'd like to know that the Guild thinks on this one. ^_^

I say salt is a spice. We have an entire taste receptors for salty. It's essential for our bodies to have. Salt is a GOOD thing and only bad if ou have sodium related hypertension. Salt makes everything better! xd

To me a condiment is usually a sauce of some sort to be added afterwards, but can be added during, like catchup, mustard, soy sauce, mayo, etc.... Anything else is basically a spice in my book

I agree with this definition.
Condiments are a way of enhancing food, thus including sauces, relishes and spices. Thus, spices ARE condiments.
Salt and pepper, to me, are spices.

But I always struggle with seperating herbs from spices, as there is no clear definition either way.
A lot of people treat the leafy parts of plants as herbs, and the seeds, roots or bark of plants as spice. sweatdrop

Or you could just include them in this topic. 3nodding

Well... there are multiple definitions for each.

Spice:

1. Any of various pungent, aromatic plant substances, such as cinnamon or nutmeg, used to flavor foods or beverages.

2. Something that adds zest or flavor.

Condiment: A substance, such as a relish, vinegar, or spice, used to flavor or complement food.

Knowing this, you can call it whatever you like. Though, in all honesty, spice seems to be used more frequently for things derived from plants, such as cinnamon. Do you know any other rocks we call spices? Feel free to let me know.

Anyway, I guess it really depends on the time of usage. If you use it while cooking, it’s a spice. After cooking, it’s a condiment.

Never the less, call it what you will, I would personally say seasoning rather than spice for these two

Oh, and as for the herb debate. To me, an herb is simply a leaf you can use in cooking. I'm not sure if that’s the actual definition, but anyway. Herbs like thyme, oregano, and basil, are all leaves.

Just my two cents.

New Question!

What spice or flavoring do you like to add to almost any of your main dishes?

I personally am rather fond of garlic salt.... >.>;;

I love garlic salt and seasoned salt. The garlic salt I have, has finely minced garlic and also has parsley in it. I use only Lawry's seasoned salt.

I sometimes like to add onion powder for a little zing. I know a lot of people who don't like onions, but they sure do love the dishes I make when I throw the powder in there! blaugh

I don't add things to my dishes.. Especially if I made them! >_< I mean, really! I spend all that time in the kitchen making the dish, then I get to the table and decide then to add something? Why the heck isn't it perfect before it leaves the kitchen?!! surprised

BTW: Salt = Condiment. >_>

Besides salt and pepper, which are basic staples, I can't really say. I don't use many other seasonings as frequently as salt and pepper.

I heart onion.

Other things that I tend to do that with are garlic and cayenne pepper. On different things of course. xd
