Naoise trotted aimlessly through the grass near the waterfall his parents had chosen to live beside and raise he and his siblings. His tail swished lazily as he grazed.

Harbinger had followed the stream back up its course today, no reason in particular other than an urge to be somewhere else than she had been for a while. She heard the roar of water from a waterfall a bit off before she actually caught scent of how close she had gotten to the resident Kirindae.

She held back for some moments before heading forward again. Their scents were not familiar, and it was likely that as long as she behaved herself there would be no need to worry. To be honest, she was feeling rather lonely today, and she didn't feel like letting a little apprehension around some strangers ruin what might prove to be a pleasant encounter.

She stopped when she spotted Naoise; stallions made her rather nervous. But he seemed harmless enough, grazing lazily on some grass off to the side. "I beg your pardon, sirrah, I am a wanderer passing through this area. Am I intruding on your territories?" First she would see if unexpected guests would be welcome, then perhaps she would stop to chat.

Naoise looked up at the mare's voice. Swallowing the grass in his mouth he gave her a smile, "You're more than welcome here miss. No need to be formal though. The name's Naoise and you are?" He ambled over to Harbinger and looked her over. She seemed nice enough, but he knew from constant drilling that not everything was as it seemed. Still, she seemed worth the effort of making introductions."

Harbinger nodded with a small and rather wry smile. "Formalities are usually a safe thing to fall back on when a wanderer stumbles into the territory of another. I've done quite a bit of traveling, not all Kirindae are so pleased to greet a stranger." She gave herself a bit of a shake to help her relax. She sensed no danger here. "My name is Harbinger. It is a pleasure to meet you, Naoise. How do things fare in your lands?" Icebreakers always sounded so very lame, didn't they?

The stallion chuckled. "You haven't been lucky enough to met a Kirindae like me. I'm a laid back kind of stallion, much to the disappointment of my sire. I take after my dam more than any other." He smiled kindly "I fare well. The weather could use an improvement though. I dislike the mugginess of this time."

Perhaps ice breakers where lame, but they were a necessity. What else could they say to make each other feel more at ease? There weren't many relaxing first time topics.

"What brings you to these parts? We haven't gotten many visitors before. Actually, to be perfectly honest, you're the first stranger I've had the pleasure of meeting.

Harbinger's wry smile relaxed into something a bit more genuine. "Perhaps my luck is getting better, then." She moved over for a quick drink from the stream before straightening with a thoughtful ear flick. "It is far muggier near the coast, though the beach itself isn't too unpleasant because of the breeze from the ocean. I was there some days ago, it was rather nice."

She canted her head at this question, brows furrowing for a moment before she simply shrugged it off. "Truth be told, Naoise, I've no idea what brings me here. I just wander from place to place as the wind leads me. And I dare say I hope I'm at least marginally pleasant for a first encounter." A bit of mirth twinkled in her eyes as she uttered that last.

"My father was rather disappointed with my behavior too, actually. I was far too adventurous for his tastes. As a mare, at least. If I'd been one of his sons I think he would have been proud." She rolled her eyes slightly. "Fathers can be rather strange creatures sometimes."

"Indeed they can." The stallion agreed with a wry smile of his own. "My sister does nothing but rat my brother and myself out, but father calls her his little princess all the same."

He let out a sigh and trotted to the water for a quick drink of his own. "It's sad really that some parents fail to see what their criticism does to their offspring. My brother Kanobi is as nervous as they come and I'm...well to be honest I'm somewhat lazy."

He gave the mare a roguish grin and an equine shrug, "Alas, I am a disappoint to my father. It's a shame really, but what can I do?"

"Are you lazy because you're rebelling against critisism or are you lazy because you feel like it?" Harbinger quirked a brow, a mildly amused grin crossing her face. "I suppose I was better off to a degree because I had an uncle who gave me all the support and attention my father was busy spending on my brothers... though Father was so very annoyed at all the 'strange notions' he gave me." She snorted and shook her head.

She pondered his question for a moment, wandering into the stream to let the cool water run over her legs and alleviate some of the rising warmth of the day. "In the end I think it is best simply to be who you are. There will be a point when he comes to appreciate that. There was for me, at least, however brief the moment was."

Her wry smile returned after that. "I suppose I had some of the trouble with my brothers that you have with your sister, though I can't be sure. Sisters are not something I have had any experience with... though I can just imagine if I did have any they would be just as distressed with my 'wild ways' as my mother was." She huffed a sigh. "I think they would all faint dead from shock if I ever went back to visit. I'm fairly certain they all thought I would die in the first season, and it's been a full cycle and then some."

Naoise had to chuckle at her question. She was a bold mare, so he would be honest. "To be truthful, it's a little bit of both. I do despise being told what to do.

He gave her a gentle smile and joined her in the water. It felt good to find someone who understood him, even just a little. The water felt good too, "It's always fun to prove wrong those who don't believe in you. May I ask why they had so little faith in you? You seem like quite a capable mare."

She gave a nod to his reply to her question. Harbinger appreciated honesty, perhaps above all other traits aside from a genuinely kind heart. "I think it is less, perhaps, the telling itself than the way it was told?" That was how it was for her, at least. This was proving to be rather interesting, indeed, for it seemed this stallion was something of a kindred spirit.

At the question he posed to her she gave a slightly bitter sigh. "My grandfather ran the herd my father was from. He was of the opinion that mares are only suitable for the herd life, and that they should always have a stallion around to guide and protect them. The mares he tended to attract were of a nature that never contradicted that. They didn't mind being looked after. My father picked up on that attitude, though I think he took it in a more domineering direction than my grandfather had intended when he left to start his own. It frustrated him, and my brothers, that I didn't fit into their ideal of what I should be. I don't think they ever quite believed I was as capable as I made myself out to be, especially since when I got in over my head I always did run to a stallion; my uncle. However my uncle only gave me advice most of the time, and only stepped in himself when he knew I couldn't figure something out on my own. He saw me for who I was and tried to encourage me, in spite of my father's little "private chats" with him."

She shrugged then. "It's rather peculiar to me, honestly, that most of my family stuck to such ideas when they are obviously not true. There seem to be few other Kirindae who think in such a manner, from what I've seen. Though there do seem to be far too many males who think that a stallion is all a mare wants out of life. Of course, I could be the odd one, I suppose... but it seems silly to me, all the same."

He waited until he was sure Harbinger was finished and gave her a sad smile, "Sadly I know exactly how that sort of behavior goes. My father is like that with mother...when he was around anyway. I think we were too laidback for his tastes. He took my sister and vanished one day. Mother won't admit it but it hurt her greatly when Father left."

Naoise gave an equine shrug, "Honestly I could care less. His ideals are not mine and I never agreed with the ideas he had when it came to mares."

The water rippled as he stomped his right front hoof as if to shake off the memory of the stallion he called father. If the truth were told, Naoise had always found life with Silvanus to be strict and stifling. That was one of the many reasons he left, despite not wanting to leave his mother. She would be alright. Rajani was there and recently they had found a little filly who they named Calfuray. Naoise gave a quiet chuckle as he realized the flower theme that bonded his mother and the little filly.

"I miss my family sometimes. All of them, even if they were annoying."

Harbinger looked rather unseeingly off into the distance. "I... wish I could say I missed them. My youngest brother, my father, my mother, my uncle. I miss them. My other brothers... I suppose I miss having them around, but I don't really miss them specifically. I also miss my uncle's old friend... he wasn't part of the herd, but we went to visit him. My family was all Sylrin, Shinzui was a Pryrin. He'd never harm a soul unless he had to, he always payed respect to the creatures he killed, and he would never try to hurt another Kirin unless he was defending someone. But my father hated him simply because of what he ate. I never understood that."

She shook her head, offering a resigned sigh and a tired half-smile. "But there is nothing to be done about the past. The future... I suppose we can see when it arrives."

"That's a horrible reason to hate someone. The Goddess made us all the way we are for a reason. It's not his fault he has to eat what he has to eat."

Naoise scowled at this. The stallion may have been laid back, but there was a limit. He had no tolerance for kirin who didn't understand each other or who were prejudiced.

"Well, do you have any plans for the future?" He asked, trying to change the subject and take his mind off the topic that had struck his nerve. He tried to sound merry and light, but his voice was strained from holding back an angrier response at her father's actions.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 14, 2009 4:36 pm

Harbinger was silent for a long moment even after the attempted subject change. The wry smile returned to her face then. "You can be angry, though I'm not sure you could make any comment to me about my father's moronic attitudes that I and my uncle did not already make to him. I think Shinzui himself was the only one who did not have something to say on the matter. He said "It is what it is, I am not one to change other people because I disagree with who they are." ...I think it was his way of telling me not to become like my father, even if it was with opposite opinions." She shrugged and decided to move along with the subject change.

"I've not had many plans for the future... I have moved from place to place as circumstance or boredom have prodded me since I left. I am far happier on my own than I was with them, although I must admit it becomes... lonely, at times. To be honest it is a bit on the peculiar side to have randomly run into someone I feel so comfortable having a conversation with." The admission struck home to her just how odd it was, and she averted her eyes from the stallion to peer down at the stream in an almost embarrassed manner. "It's been a rather long time since I've had much of a talk with anyone."

Naoise gave Harbinger a gentle smile. The truth was he too felt comfortable talking to her. It was rare that he felt comfortable with a kirin outside of his herd. "That's quite alright. I don't mind just listening. If you'd like you can find me any time and we can chat."

He wracked his brain to try and think of something that might cheer her up.
