"Don't worry, it's safe here." Demetri's familiar voice was probably the only thing keeping Renee's mind from running away. First she'd been moved far away from her beautiful home in Egypt to the crowded and over-populated metropolis of New York City and now she had been moved off to some camp for sons and daughters of the Greek gods. Which threw her whole world off, Renee had been a devout Muslim her entire life, suddenly she was living proof that Allah didn't exist and that Muhammad was a joke. "C'mon, Renee. Chiron will help you get settled."

Upon entering the house Demetri had identified as the Big House, Renee was shuffled lots of paperwork and was given lots of long talks and hours of discussion had taken place. Rules were explained, guidelines set in stone, and business was taken care of. After four long hours, Renee was released to her cabin. On their way in, Renee had been claimed by her mother, *********, the minor goddess of Youth. Demetri had explained it all.

Renee had been informed she would be staying in the Hermes cabin until her cabin had been constructed. She would have a large say in the building of her cabin. The architect was set to be the cabin counselor for Athena, some girl named Darian. They were to work on plans tomorrow instead of attending their lessons. Renee was going to be forced to work with someone she didn't even know to build her new home. And still manage to accept her new fate. Currently, Renee's life sucked.

Demetri had taken care of her bags and her trunk, told her she should get acquainted with the place and the people, that this was her new home and her new family. So far, Renee had a rude encounter with a tanned runner who had hit on her and told her her accent was cute and she'd managed to anger the Oak nymph on the edge of the North Forest. After the small amount of what she'd seen, Renee sat on the edge of the short dock to the pond in the middle of the Olympian cabins. The Naiads didn't seem to mind, just continued weaving their baskets and giggling in some language she didn't understand. Friends would be hard to come by.

Astrid was lounging in a purple silk hammock she had made by tying up a purple sheet between to trees, listening to Yune sing "I'm not that girl" from Wicked, sipping on a strawberry smoothie and reading a book in Ancient Greek when she notice a girl off to her left. Astrid had never seen this girl before and she knew everyone at camp at least by sight, so there was only one possibility! "A new camper!" Astrid gasped. She jumped out of the hammock, throwing her book and smoother to the ground, not caring that the smoothie splashed all over a dryad in a near by blackberry bush, and rushed down to the new girl.

The daughter of Hecate moved to stand right in front of her and took a moment to look her over, she didn't have any of the defining looks of any major gods, really. She wondered who would claim her. She bent down, getting just inches away from her face, studying it until suddenly she straightened up with a huge smile and held out her hand, various bangles and bracelets clanking against her wrist. "Hiya! I'm Asteria Bennette, but you can call me Astrid, I mean everyone does!' she said with a giggle. "Who are you? What's your name?"

Renee's eyes grew wide and she gasped, shocked from the sudden presence. She stammered for a few moments, unable to grasp what the girl had said or manage a reply. Her throat closed for a moment and she gagged, sputtered, then righted herself as she gave a weak smile to the girl who she had now realized was named Asteria, or Astrid. "Uhm. Hello." She reached her hand forward, shaking it gently before withdrawing her hands back to her sides. "I'm Renee Truce. I have no nickname. It's nice to meet you, Astrid." Renee stumbled over Astrid's name and blushed slightly, "Sorry. My English is not so good."

Astrid smiled and shook Renee's hand fiercely as she offered it. Then she plopped down happily next to Renee in a poof of purple robes and clattering bangles. "Oh it's okay, we get a lot of foreign campers. My friend Bennie was born in France. Yeah, France, pretty cool huh?" she said, examining a fingernail. "So, you know your parent yet?" she asked, "It'd be cool if we were sisters huh?! Then I could teach you all the cool spells I know like this one!" suddenly Astrid stood up and threw out her hands, sending a sparkling purple blast out over the water. "Pretty cool huh?" she said with a smile. "Yep, that's me, daughter of Hecate, goddess of magic." she explained.

Blinking furiously, Renee gasped. She smiled again, looking up at Astrid. "I was claimed on my way to Camp. Demetri said the symbol meant that ********* is my mother. The youth goddess." Renee didn't pronounce ********* name right, her accent ripping at it. "Demetri said it is ironic. Because I was given a tattoo last month that is foreign for what the man said is longevity. He said it was youth, it would look good for me."

Astrid nodded, listening intently, "That's cool, so you'll be eternally young, huh?? That's sooooo cool!" she said breathlessly, her green eyes wide with thought. "I wonder if I could whip up a spell..." she murmured. "Mind you it'd be difficult," she said, turning and putting a hand on Renee's arm, now totally enveloped in the idea of eternal youth. "I would have to keep the spell up CONSTANTLY, one slip and I'd start aging rapidly, my body would want to keep up." she explained, as if she were talking to someone who could understand. "And the energy source would have to be vast, much bigger than any energy I have in my body, and probably all the power gems in the entire CABIN." she explained.

Renee paid no heed to Astrid's words, the first sentence still had her stumped. "I will be young, forever? I'm not going to be old? Demetri didn't tell me that." She pulled at her fingerless gloves, nervous now. "Do you think I will die? Or I will live forever?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:46 pm

Astrid's eyes widened in horror, "Oh no! I mean um... well, I don't really KNOW, know, you know? I just you know, figured... I mean your mom is the goddess of youth, so...yeah..." Astrid winced slightly, this was awkward. "I mean you're still mortal, though, right? So I'm sure you won't live forEVER. You're gonna die!" she said that last sentence a bit too cheerfully, "Oh gosh that sounds awful, I mean um, well... ugh I feel reallyl bad now..." she said, putting a hand over her eyes.

Renee stood quickly, "No no. It's fine. Your words are true. It is, uhm. What is the word? Understandable. Yes, that is right. It is understandable to believe that." Renee realized now that she looked down on Astrid, very down, almost half a foot.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:14 pm

Astrid looked up at Renee, her eyes wide and mouth open slightly. "You're tall..." she grumbled. "Shrink!" she growled up at Renee. Then she giggled, writing something in the air, her eyes flashed purple and Renee shrunk four inches. "That's a bit better," she said with a smile. "Oh, you know I could help you with your english!" she said happily. Astrid got excited at this idea. "Come with me!" she commanded, dragging her along toward her cabin. Astrid charged through the bead curtain entrance and to her bunk, where she pulled out a spell book, flipping through it with pursed lips. "Hmm.... maybe this will work..." she snapped the book shut and tossed it aside with a kind smile. "Alright I can't exactly just make you learn english automatically, so I'm going to enchant a necklace and while you wear it you kind of like, learn better." she explained, picking out her least favorite necklace (one she could bear to part with). It was a simple silver chain with a jade stone set in silver. "Let's begin...." she murmured. Astrid's eyes flashed purple and so did the necklace, making it rise into the air. Then she began speaking in the same magical language that was written on the outside of the cabin, the language of spells. She finished talking there was one last burst of purple before it dropped. Astrid caught it quickly and walked behind Renee. "There we go," she said as she fastened it. "Just wear that until you pick up English." she explained with a cheerful smile.

"Thank you." Renee admired the necklace for a moment, then scrunched her nose. "It smells strongly of herbs here. Like a medicine man's hut in the old villages." Then Renee turned her attention back to the previous spell cast, to shrink her. "It would be very nice of you to not do what you did and make me tall again."

Astrid smiled happily, "It's to help calm the campers inside," she explained, "Anger disrupts the delicate magical balance inside all of our bodies." she explained in a slow, calm voice putting her hands out in front of her like she ways praying. She took a few deep breaths, during which a content, peaceful smile worked it's way onto her face, until Renee mentioned her height. Her eyes snapped open and she glared. Astrid hated when people were taller than her. "Fine..." she muttered. She clapped her hands and Renee had a sudden growth spurt. Yeah, really all the hand waving was just for show. Spells were actually really simple.

A small smile played Renee's lips, "Thank you. You are very powerful. It must be useful." She looked around herself, taking in the environment, "Did they let you assist in the building of your cabin?"

Astrid smiled at the compliment, "Well, I try." she said trying to be modest, and failing horribly. "What? Oh, no, the Head counselor got to work with it..." she explained, pouting slightly. "I've only been here one year." she explained, displaying her leather necklace with its lonely, one bead. "Do you get to build your cabin?" she asked, curious. "I mean, we don't have a ********* cabin do we?" she asked.

"No. Chiron told me I had to talk to a girl named Darian tomorrow and she would help me with it." Renee fumbled with her hands, "Being inside makes me nervous. Do you mind if we return outdoors?"
