In a lily pond I lay All upon a summer's day

Then I chased a dragonfly All across an ancient sky

Ah, glorious summer. In all of its wrathful, blistering heat; its lack of rain; its uncomfortable, arid nature; its sudden, violent thunder and lightning storms. All of that, and much more for anyone who bore a dark coat.
Mm, yes. He could feel his bangs clinging to his face, and even the heartiest shake of his head could hardly prompt them to move. A big, sticky mess he was. It was days like these that the kalona was at least thankful for a short, cropped mane, save for his bangs. That, and he found that flying for a bit tended to cool the body down, if only for a short while. Still, this proved to be taxing on the body, and when he landed, he'd become even hotter than before. Gods, was there no way to beat the sun?
Tail snapping back and forth irritably, Viraj paced the edge of the pond he had promised to meet Lucifer at. The two had made plans to spend the day together, just for them, something especially important due to the fact that Viraj had been wandering off every couple of days or so, in pursuit of more willing herdmates. He couldn't help but feel he had neglected his first friend in these new lands. He also chose to ignore the fact that this bothered him enough to reserve an entire day for the boy.
The lily pond was large and inviting. Lilies adorned the water's surface here and there, floating peacefully on the glassy reflection. Tall grass lined the edge of the pond, and, overall, the whole thing seemed a bit out of place. Such a beautiful thing in this blistering heat, it must have been a gift from the heavens.
He'd only found it yesterday. Surprisingly, it was empty then, and empty still, although his presence may have had an effect on that. It satisfied him in a grim sort of way, despite the fact that he knew fully well how ironic it was that he would willingly use his race to intimidate others.
"Alright," he huffed, abruptly turning to face the pond. "Enough standing around." Done waiting, he brought a black, cloven hoof up, lowering it into the water, then the other. Soon, he was wading into the pond, fanning his wings out to allow them to skim the top of the water. Damn, it felt good to finally cool off. The fish in the pond darted this way and that, but he made no effort to chase them.
It really was a large pond. He could easily swim - poorly, because he didn't practice - without his hooves touching the bottom, and there was enough room to swim about without feeling cramped.
His tail skimmed the water behind him, floating at the top parallel to his body. It must have looked silly, but he didn't mind. After a moment, he ducked his head underneath the water, bringing it back up quickly and shaking the water out of his hair.
Now, to wait for Lucifer, he thought, peering upward at the sky as he swam about.

Lucifer trotted slowly , making his way through all sorts of long grasses , huffing and puffing. It certainly wasn't easy... having all that damned hair. He was a wreck really, his spikes sagged slightly over the sides of his neck, meanwhile his tail remained as springy and poofy as ever. But with the heat, it felt like he was dragging a weight.
He finally reached the pond ,hoping Viraj wouldn't have minded waiting a tad for him ,he looked around, not spotting him right away, he continued on. He continued to circumnavigate the pond, until spying him.
He got a bit closer, until he was on shore right behind Viraj. "Hey there, stranger~" His voice was strained, due to the heat, and immediately he dipped a hoof in the water, feeling refreshed almost instantly.

Letting out a hoarse laugh, the stallion angled his head as he attempted a turn in the pond, one eye peering over at Lucifer. It was difficult to navigate in the water, he found, as it made him rather sluggish, but he didn't mind it. It was much cooler than the surrounding air; looking at Lucifer now, his almost dainty self and large tail, he couldn't help but wonder if the boy would really want to get wet. Would his tail float?
"Hahaha!" Amused by the thought, he finally turned himself around enough to face the other, wings flapping in an effort to help the attempt. A mild grin crept onto his face in response to his playful tone.
"Oh, hello there," he drawled, hooves scraping the bottom of a shallower part of the pond. "I don't suppose you come around here often?"

Lucifer laughed. "No, stranger~... You should know me and water don't mesh well!" He took a few more steps, stopping at the point where the middle of his tail was in the water. He wasn't a strong swimmer. Not at all.
He looked to Viraj, shaking his mane. "Come closer, your too far away!" He laughed again, a playful grin spread across his face.

"You know, I didn't know that about you," he remarked, raising his brows at Lucifer. It was of no surprise, really, considering the poor stallion's generous tail. Offering a sound of sympathy, he didn't bother hiding his sarcasm.
"Oh, alright..." Conceding, Viraj made the effort to swim back to where Lucifer stood, finding himself able to walk the majority of the way there. The pond wasn't terribly deep, but if it could accommodate his tall frame, it was deep enough. "Afraid of your hair dragging you down? I would be." Using his tail, he struck the water's surface, bringing light droplets into the air and toward Lucifer. "And how has your day been? Dull, like mine? I swear, this heat is killing off all the entertainment."

Lucifer sighed. "You simply have no idea. Between the sun and dragging my tail along, I'm exausted."
Just then a dragonfly zoomed by, leaving Lucifer in awe. He envied those damned insects, being able to fly freely with no concern in the world. It was a pity they died so quickly.
"And yes, I am quite afraid of being dragged down by my hair, or some beastie from the bottom of the murky depths." The last part was lucifer's poor attempt at sarcasm, seeing as he'd picked up some of it from Viraj's own witty humor.
"So tell me, how'd you find this place, it's beautiful.." He admired the lillies which seemed to dance around the surface as the ripples caused by Viraj's swimming caused them to bop up and down.;

He chuckled lightly at the joke, casting a quick glance into the depths below. Fish darted here and there, afraid to come too close to the intruder. If he had been a quicker stallion, he might have dove down to try to bite some, but alas.
"The water," he started, lashing its pristine surface with his tail. "It has a distinct smell. You know the smell of rain? Something like that, I suppose." He didn't really know how to explain it without sounding like an idiot, and it was much too hot to try to dig deeper.
Ugh, these humid days really got to him. He wanted to crawl into a dark cave and sleep them away, but that certainly wasn't productive in the slightest. Like every other Kalona, he'd have to suck it up.
