He'd told his herd he would be gone for a few days and then left with only that bare warning. Rikki wasn't even sure why he'd been so restless the past few days before that, but some thing or other had simply prompted him that he needed to go. He knew where to catch up with the others, and he was certainly old enough to go out on his own by now; there'd been no reason not to go, and many for it. Most of them revolving around Ashia and Keshet's adventures when they were younger, and the fact that they both now had mates and things to do with their lives and all he'd been doing was... well, just being there. He wanted to do more than that.

What precisely he wanted to do he hadn't decided yet, but he did know he wanted to explore more of the world than just the areas he saw when he was helping to patrol the lands as the Nomads wandered through. What it all boiled down to was that he was now somewhere out in the woods, had nary a clue where precisely he was, and while nothing of particular note had happened quite yet, he was still enjoying himself.

This particular moment he was peering down into a stream as small silver flashes reflected off the scales of the fish within. He'd never tried meat with his Pryrin brothers, since generally speaking he was content with eating plants. Also... he didn't like the thought of having to go off and essentially hide while he was eating so he wouldn't upset the Sylrin members of his herd. Every once in a while, though, he found himself craving something the plants just didn't provide, and he was wondering how particularly hard it could be to catch a fish...

Hoshi trotted lightly through the shallows of the stream, in an unusually good mood. Yue followed along the bank, the small lizard being not overly fond of water. The sun was bright on he back, the cool water felt great against her legs, no one had annoyed her, and she hadn't stepped on Yue once today! A splendid day indeed.

She noticed a school of tiny silver fish swimming past her legs and gave a whinny of delight, watching the shimmering patterns they made. This was the life, none of that silly herd business many of the other Kirin swore by. If she needed company, she went out and sought it. Who needed someone bugging them all the time, yet alone an entire herd of someones?

So lost in thought was she that she did not notice the stallion gazing thoughtfully into the water when he came into view around a bend in the stream. Yue chittered at her frantically, but she took no notice.

At almost the same moment the small reptilian companion began chittering Rikki quite abruptly dunked his head in the water, his open jaws snapping at a fish that had drifted close enough to tempt him to strike. A moment later he jerked it back out, a fish dangling by its tail fins from his mouth. So surprised was he that his first attempt had actually been successful he hesitated a moment too long before thinking to toss the fish to shore. It flopped about violently and dropped back into the water with half its tail missing, subsequently disappearing in the muddy cloud it kicked up upon striking the bottom.

He snorted water out of his nostrils in both surprise and frustration before spitting out the bit of fin in his mouth. The small sampling of blood he'd gotten was faint but tantalizing. He'd have to work on this...

Finally Yue's noise beat its way through his minor daze and into his ears and he glanced over to see what was producing such a little racket. Yue was seen but not really registered as his gaze was subsequently drawn to the lovely Kirin mare meandering down the stream. A hundred charming compliments and witty greetings rushed through his head, but not one seemed to find the way to his mouth and he was left gawking like a thunderstruck colt.

Hoshi froze suddenly, feeling another's gaze upon her and finally registering Yue's warnings. He gaze darted about, landing on the brightly colored stallion further along the stream. He was striking, but also unknown. He also had a very odd look on his face, and she wasn't sure if he was getting ready to talk to her or eat her. A small fleck of what might be blood on his muzzle was not encouraging. Legs tensed, she got ready to flee if he did anything she didn't like.

"I'm sorry, I didn't see you there. I did not mean to bother you."

Rikki flushed beneath his pale fur and turned his head to clear his throat of the cottony feeling that had lodged itself there. "Not a bother, just a little, uh, starstruck?" Oh good Goddess that sounded lame. He could do better than that! "I just wasn't expecting to see the night sky walking about in Kirin form when I looked over to see what was making that noise, is all."

She seemed nervous, and awfully fixated on his face. Why on earth was she... blood on his tongue. Blood on his mouth. If he'd had a tree handy he would have smacked his head on it. He hurriedly dunked his face into the water and swished it around, coming up at least mostly clean. "Sorry about that... I was trying to catch a fish. I had it! Sort of... err..." he flushed again. If she was a Sylrin she might not appreciate his trying to eat meat, and if she was a Pryrin she'd probably laugh at him for all but admitting he didn't know how to fish. He really, really wished he could turn invisible at the moment.

Of course, that line of thought led him into wondering how weird she'd think he was if she knew he enjoyed both plants and meat. What with his entire family pretty much being one or the other it hadn't occured to him that being omnivorous might be a normal thing. He'd stuck to plants for so long he hadn't even thought to ask anyone about it... or for hunting lessons...

He was digging himself into a very large mental hole about now.

Hoshi's mood moved through wary, into befuddled, and beyond that to amusement as the bright stallion dug himself deeper and deeper with cliched compliments. She gave a low snort of laughter, no longer scared in the least. Seeing her calmness, Yue also relaxed.

"And do my eyes glitter like stars, or perhaps diamond chips? What a cold image you paint of me, good sir." She moved closer, head canted slightly to one side as she studied him. She was having a very hard time not breaking out in laughter. Her teasing, mischievous side was getting the best of her again.

Rikki, well, blinked at that. But the teasing did, at least, make him a bit more comfortable. She was at least playing, rather than just shoving what a fool he'd made of himself in his face.

"A summer night with the skies ablaze with shimmering lights and entrancing visions is cold? Do tell." He tilted his head back at her, deciding for the moment to let her approach at her own pace... and also because he felt like he'd trip over himself if he tried to walk. "As for your eyes..." He studied them as she drew closer. "...honestly they remind me more of a flash of sunlight off the water."

Finally he stepped out into the stream, somewhat slowly to be on the safe side. "Though I think perhaps you might put the night to shame..." He grinned at her, a flash of coltish shyness crossing his features as he dipped his head for a moment in nervousness. "I'm Erikkeni... my family all call me Rikki. Could I have your name, lovely lady? If I've managed not to completely put my hoof in my mouth so far, anyway."

Hoshi shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "The night sky may be lovely, but it is so distant and impersonal, no?" She took a step closer. "And sunlight on water is more lively, but fleeting and impossible to catch. Perhaps not so far off after all." She smiled coyly and took another step. "You, I would compare to a warm campfire."

"Rikki." she repeated, liking how his name rolled across her tongue. "I am called Hoshi." She smiled, a genuine smile this time, and looked at his hooves. "Your hoof seems firmly planted on the ground to me, I think you are safe for now."

Rikki could feel that his cheeks were still slightly flushed, but he tried to ignore it. "I don't know if I could ever catch you, lovely lady, but I assure you that you seem to have caught me. I fear you will yet catch my tongue and make me trip over it." He grinned, canting his head as she called him a campfire, of all things. "A campfire, am I? Might I ask why?"

"Hoshi." He imagined what the word might taste like as he said it, deciding whatever flavor it was that he liked it. "That's a lovely name." There was a difference in his tone as he said that part, a statement in simple honesty and without the undertone of flirtation. He followed her gaze down to his hooves and laughed. "Oh good. I managed that particular maneuver quite by accident when I was a colt, it was rather uncomfortable. I have since sworn off trying to climb trees."

"You must have quite an impressive tongue then, sir, to be able to trip over it." She thought about his question. "A campfire is warm and gentle, but with the potential to become a forest fire." She gave him a small smile. "Does it not fit you?"

She blinked at his admission, startled into stark honesty without a hint of teasing. "You mean you actually managed to end up with your hoof in your mouth? Impressive. You must have been more flexible than average."

"Yeah... that sounds like me." Rikki smiled and raised his head proudly, shyness momentarily put aside. He made quite the striking figure when he wanted to. "Could I perhaps be afforded the honor of helping to light your way today, lovely lady?" A rather flowery, and corny, method of asking if he could accompany her, sure, but it seemed to be making her smile if nothing else!

Further bravado was rather quickly quelled by her comment about flexibility and he lowered his head, turning to the side to offer an embarrassed cough. "Well... I was for about a week after that, anyway."

"Perhaps. I had better be careful, I would not wish to get burned after all. Do you more often resemble the campfire... or the forest fire?" She replied lightly, but there was a serious question buried in the banter.

"Oh, well I am glad no lasting harm seems to have come of it." she responded, still slightly bemused.

Rikki pawed idly at the dirt while looking thoughtfully to the sky as he mulled over a reply to her question. "Depends on if someone intends to put my family in danger. Especially my sister. I'm horribly overprotective at times, she's been kind enough to inform me."

He grinned sheepishly in response to her last comment. "I have... interesting luck." He shrugged a bit, not sure what else to say about that at the moment.

Hoshi nodded, acknowledging the serious tone of his response. "Then, so long as I do not run afoul of your family, I should be safe enough. I have not harmed a Kirin yet, I do not plan to start now." She smiled to lighten the mood.

"Interesting luck indeed, oh radiant one." Her smile widened.
