Alright, so I'm a very inflexible person ever since a growth spurt I had in middle school. (My muscles are so tight that they messed up my left knee...D= ) During basics block at band, it's been pointed out to me many times, this year and last year, that my feet aren't in a ski-line when I'm doing slides when my shoulders are right, and when my feet are right, my shoulders aren't. And when I do backwards slides, I start to half-crab...it's really weird, and I hate not doing things right. :[ Are there any stretches or something I can do to help fix this? My director told me it could be the way I'm built, and that I may never be able to do slides as well as other people...but I'd like to try, at least. xd

I'd imagine this stretch might help.

Twist your shoulders, with your elbows out, as far to the right as possible, then to the left. Basically a slide position. Then, do the same thing, only keep your head facing the same way as your feet. Then go back to the first way, a normal slide. For whatever reason, you can stretch a lot further after doing this.
Other than that, try stretching your middle, leaning as far sideways as you can, etc. These are great exercises for breathing as well as for slides. If you do them daily, they help a lot. I either do them in the morning or before I start practicing. If you already do these, sorry!

This is kind of like the above, but it is what we do to practice slides. We call it Mr. Fantastic, and actually stole it form my sister's school. we got a senior from her school last year who taught it to us

(Without instrment)

Go to attention but put your knuckles out(Like a trumpet horns down while marching)
For four counts, go to normal attention(trumpet attention)
For the next four counts move your shoulders to the left, like a right slide.
Within the next four counts go back to forward
Four more counts to go to right like a left slide.
Four counts to go back to attention.
horns down in the last four counts.

You can also do it with your instrument, which is the same thing just follow your instrument horns up and horns down.

You can also march while doing this. 24 counts at whatever stepsize you like, even backwards.

there is also what we call the Flip Flop drill(Can be torture the way my bd does itXD) Can be done ith or withour instrument. Just be at horns up the whole time. You have to be able to march for this one. I think it is 8 counts per pop.

Forward march 8 counts
pop to the left and hold 8 counts
Pivet to be marching right backwards 8 counts
Pop to forward so you are amrching straight backwards(looking at your satarting point
pop to the left for backwards another 8 counts.
Pivet to be marching right slide facing towards end point
Pop forward for last eight counts, then touch and close.

Yeah, it s harder to explain then I thought. Hope that helps!

We do that exercise, too! We call it The Macine...makes it seem cooler. xd

Thanks to both of you for the stretch ideas, too. =D
