Lesson 1
Time Lasted: Months 1-3
Topic: Getting to Know Your Dragon
You Should Know: Basic dragon care including how to properly bathe and oil your dragon, how much to feed your dragon; the rules of the Weyr (no drinking, no sex, and do not stray too far from your dragon); regulation hair cuts may or may not be done in this lesson
Dragons Notes: Not used to being separated from their bondeds and will become distressed if they are left alone for too long; cannot hunt for themselves; cannot go Between; cannot fly; need lots of babying

Another clutch, another set of weyrlings. Sometimes, F'sey had to wonder why he put himself up to this. He knew, of course, he did enjoy it, but the first few lessons were always quite rough. There were the smart-asses that needed to be broken, there were the those still scared stiff by the fact they had actually Impressed and, of course, there were the idiots. There was nothing that could be done for idiots. He could only hope Cheoth's children had an ounce of sense. And to be honest, that might be asking too much. Arioth and Varth displayed nothing but idiotic needs for dominance on the Sands.

Sighing, F'sey glanced over at his assistant, bluerider H'dra, and waited impatiently for the weyrlings to start filing in. They weren't late (yet) but the redhead wouldn't hesitate to hand out punishments to those who were. Yes, it was lesson number one. Yes, they were tired and yes, maybe he should have been a little nicer to them. No. He did not particularly care. Being a dragonrider wasn't supposed to be easy, shaffit! F'sey grumbled to himself and fidgeted. So he was early. They ought to be too.

As soon as some of the weyrlings started to arrive, F'sey got right to business. "Welcome to the life of a dragonrider. While your dragons are probably hungry, I thought we'd get the most painful part of this lesson out of the way first. Time for your mandatory haircuts."

W'inmine, you will be prompt!

It wasn't like W'in actually needed the pushing of the patchy blue dragonet, but Toronth seemed absolutely convinced that W'in wouldn't be able to fend for himself otherwise, and that was worrying. Promptness is the mark of a good rider and a good man, Toronth continued to insist, pushing W'in along in spite of the fact that W'in was trying to trot ahead of him. He was currently barefoot through no fault of his own; some time while he was sleeping, his dragonet had managed to move all his shoes some undisclosed location and was not sharing.

"You could have at least given my shoes back," he muttered to Toronth as the blue gave one final push, nearly knocking him to one knee in front of F'sey. W'in jerked himself back up and stood quietly, watching the man with a wary eye.

It will make you stronger, W'inmine. It builds character.

"I hate you."

...Haircuts? Aha! W'in was lucky on this one. He had never seen the appeal in long hair on men; it was for girls only. Or maybe that was just the 'please don't let me be mistaken for a woman AGAIN' instinct talking.

With work, you'll never be mistaken for anything, Toronth piped up, looking at the Weyrlingmaster attentively, eyes a cheerful green.

A lot of work, but it will be worth it.

Since W’in and Toronth were already awake, it was impossible for M’al and Redhath to sleep, no matter how much the Blue weyrlings wanted to. Following along the other pair, M’al yawned. Redhath, of course, was as graceful as always, mind clicking away as he planned his next few steps. The dragonet’s eyes, nearly constantly whirling between orange and yellow, took in the scenes around him.

And this is…? What’s the purpose, mine? Actually, the dragonet had been awake a little longer than the human weyrlings had thought; he had been busy conspiring with Toronth to get rid of W’in’s shoes. Toro did it because he wanted W’in to toughen up. Redhath just thought it would be funny.

“To learn, Red,” M’al said muzzily, trying to pull back another yawn. “Hush, I should probably pay attention to this…”

Both males listened for a brief while. Then Redhath spoke up, in a slightly snarky tone, So… too much hair impedes learning, does it? This explains much… HE has too much hair.

M’al barely resisted the urge to facepalm at that and hoped that the Blue had the sense to keep such thoughts away from the Weyrlingmaster’s Green. He wasn’t too broken up about the loss of his hair; he could always grow some more… but, a certain instinct was kicking him to say something. “Sir? I’ve noticed that a lot of the dragonriders here have longer hair. Does it still count as mandatory if not everyone has it?”

Yes. He was going to be ‘THAT’ one.

Why are we here? Rumbling ominously, Arioth glared around at her clutchmates. ...Come to think of it, she was rarely not glaring, so this was normal enough. Favoring Varth with a special extra-ferocious look, she strode along at Rinfala's side with as much grace as her awkward dragonet limbs would allow. Which wasn't much, really. This only served to make her glares even more venomous.

"I need to learn how to take care of you, Arioth," Rinfala explained, suppressing a sigh. She'd explained this earlier that morning, but Arioth saw little need to sit through a boring lesson...until it was noticed that Varth might do better in those lessons. She'd had few protests after that, until now. Rinfala, of course, was about to protest quite a lot. As soon as she heard the words 'haircut,' her jaw set and one hand started to drift closer to her belt knife. She wasn't losing her hair unless the person cutting it lost theirs!

Kess, due to her arm and mood, had been sticking close to her new home lately, resulting in no problem showing up to her lesson on time, Condoroth as ready-to-work as always. The blonde gave her bond a light stroke as they came to a stop in front of the Weyrlingmaster's watchful gaze.

She knew him, of course, who didn't? The newest arrivals to the Weyr, perhaps. Still, she hadn't spoken with him much, their brief, almost encounter on the sands cut off by the reckless behavior of the left-over Candidates and the agitation of Cheoth.

She had to smile, just barely, as her teal green brushed her mind with a thought. Mine, we are going to do well today, I promise.

Her blue eyes whirled as they shifted to Toronth and she let out a quiet, greeting croon, but was wise enough to greet her Queen first.

Greetings Arioth! Hello, Toronth!

As for the haircut. A respectful nod in greeting to F'sey and she wondering just what the required length was. Hers had finally grown to her shoulders, but it was near-always tied back in a bun. She of course, wouldn't mind a cut.

"'Morning, Rin." A nod for her friend.

B'lin was just in time, and it wasn't really his fault they were almost late. Maybe if Xanthoth didn't have to stop and make eyes at every single woman they walked past getting here, they'd have been as early as he would have liked. Dragon and rider shared a connection, but rarer than most did this duo share feelings. A lingering feeling of dread about what could have been made B'lin's stomach do flip flops. Xanthoth couldn't have felt more at ease. Life was good!

Calm, Mine. We're on time! They are not yelling at us! See? On the way to where he'd decided to stand, Xanthoth passed two of his clutchmates; Redhath and Arioth. In a predictable move, the bronze hadn't spared the other male a passing glance. Arioth, on the other hand, was greeted with a friendly smile and her glaring didn't bother him in the slightest. Silly, fiesty little queen!

Finally B'lin stopped, his dragon coming to a halt beside him. The bronze emitted a hum of laughter shortly after. Haircuts! What a funny way to start the lesson for his bald companion! The reason for this noisy interruption didn't escape B'lin's common sense. Trying not to look as awkward as he suddenly felt (thanks a lot, Xathoth!), he nudged the dragonet and gave him A Look.

F'sey was about to comment on the first bluerider's promptness when he noticed the boy's decided lack of shoes. He wasn't wearing shoes? The redhead frowned and puzzled over this very briefly. Did he not know how to get dressed? If this was how the rest of the clutch was going to turn out, Faranth help him. No shoes? No shoes? Really? What did he think this was, some kind of j-

Mine? Perhaps he just wanted to be on time.

F'sey grunted as Ialluth added her two-cents. The green always had good intentions, but the Weyrlingmaster was certain not everyone was as noble as his dragon hoped they were. He wasn't about to fall for such a thing. "You. W'in, is it? Of Toronth? Go back and get your shoes. You won't be punished for being late as long as you find them. And take your dragon with you."

Of course, the second bluerider was no better. This one had the attitude. Of course. There had to be one in every lot, didn't there? Smart dragon, smart mouth. It was a very dangerous combination and the Weyrlingmaster didn't particularly care for the boy's insubordination. Sure, perhaps shoeless W'in made a fool of himself, but smart-a** M'al was about to make a bigger mistake.

"It's mandatory for you, rat. You and everyone else who just Impressed. You're a weyrling now." Yeah, it meant you had less rights. It also meant you had to cut your hair.

The goldrider and bronzerider didn't seem to put up that much of a fuss, nor the greenrider. K'lan was the one with a broken arm, he noted, and perhaps he'd take that into consideration during the rest of their lesson. Perhaps not. It was her own sharding fault she didn't get out of Arioth's way fast enough. She should have known better, the Queen had very clearly been on a rampage. Well, he'd deal with her when the time came.

"Who wants to go first?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:32 pm

Perhaps Arioth would demand Rinfala went first, but if she didn't K'lan was more than comfortable doing so. She had no particular attachment to her hair, which grew quickly, nor was she very vain.

This was the least interesting part of their lesson, and she'd rather have it over sooner rather than later. Stepping forward, she reached up with her good hand to remove her hairtie.

"I will, sir."

Very good, Mine!

Oh shards, first day, and he was late. Not just late, no, but badly late. At full speed he'd been charging down the halls, hurriedly throwing on his shoes and everything else he'd needed to get ready. Yes, it might've been horribly silly to see A'nt- newly Impressed brown rider, well built, tall young man- scrambling like a girl to get his shirt on and make it to lessons on time, but really- what was a boy to do? Shards and shells, he'd KNOWN he was forgetting something!

They'd given plenty of notice for the exact timing on making this. Shells, he should've known! Day one, and he was already making a fool out of himself- but, really, he'd wanted to be on time! He'd just sort of gotten occupied chatting with Matsukazeth instead of getting ready, and in that way, had missed his timing for when to start getting ready. So now? Now he was barreling through the hallways with little more than a quick 's'cuse me' or 'sorry' to anyone he passed, looking not only late but terribly shaggy too boot. Hadn't even had time to fix up his hair, darn it!

I- I am sorry I did not help you, mine! I should have remembered! Matsukazeth added quietly, seemingly distressed about letting His oversleep. Shooting a sympathetic smile over his shoulder as A'nt rounded a corner, he waved it off.

"No, no, s'not a big deal, Matsukazeth! I should've been paying attention, really. If anyone's going to be taking the fault in this," he called clearly, unfortunately timing himself so that he passed through the doorway right as his sentence finished, skidding to a halt perfectly within earshot of the weyrlingmaster. But no, unfortunately for A'nt, he hadn't heard the beginning of the question he was unknowingly about to answer. He was far too occupied in scurrying in with his brown, desperate to at least not be embarrassingly late.

"...It's going to be me!"

With a last longing look in the direction of the kitchens, A'bri led Varth into the room lessons were to be held. Despite his early rising, he hadn't yet managed to find himself anything to eat, and he was starting to wish he had. But it wouldn't do to be too late- and Varth was huffing and puffing in his mind already. Apparently he was offended that while they had been close by, Arioth had managed to make it into the room first.

"Is it really that important?" A'bri asked quietly as they slipped in- well, A'bri attempted to slip in, Varth simply stalked in looking as impressive as possible for a baby- and moved toward an empty space.

: Of course it is,: Varth replied, sounding offended. :She will think she is better because she was here first. And she is wrong- we were here first, we just did not go inside!:

"It's just lessons, it's not a race," A'bri countered, glancing around in an effort to figure out what was going on. He'd only managed to hear the question, "Who wants to go first?", and was entirely unsure as to what it was in regards to.

:We should go first,: Varth said, nudging A'bri with his head- surely it didn't matter what it was, they would do it first, and they would be the best at it. A'bri shook his head, disagreeing with that sentiment. He didn't want to volunteer for anything if he didn't know what he was volunteering for. Besides, A'nt- A'bri smiled a brief greeting to him as he rushed in- had answered, and one of the girls, one he didn't know, had as well.

"We'll just wait and see what's it's about," he murmured, trying to keep his voice down so that he didn't disrupt things.

"Oohh... how perfect..." Ferris mumbled quietly to herself as she entered the class and took the very first spot she could find. She didn't know who she was sitting next to, but whatever. They had been on time! Just... at the back of the pack that was filing in and... stuff. Totally. SHE HAD SO GOTTEN TO THE DOORS ON TIME. Or at least had intended to. The whole distinction between what HAD happened and what had been intended was rather fuzzy right now.

"I'm sorry, Hwinth..."

The splotchy green looked up at hers from her place on the floor. It's alright, Ferrismine. I'm not bothered -- it's just a hiccup. she said with a tilt of her head, her faceted eyes whirling a steady blue. Being a minute late wasn't even a nudge on her small, rock-hard self.

Boosted by Hwinth's reply, Ferris turned her attention to F'sey.

Ahh, a couple of volunteers. First was the girl; she didn't seem particularly troubled by the announcement. F'sey watched the young greenrider with a trace of a smile, marking the play down in his mental book of 'Things My Weyrlings Have Done'. He had an exceedingly good memory for that kind of thing, but unfortunately, it was usually used for holding grudges and thinking of interesting punishments for weyrlings who were marked down for doing excessively irritating things.

The second volunteer was one of the many brownriders (there certainly were a lot in this clutch, weren't there?). The quietest of the browns that had hatched, if F'sey remember correctly. In fact, Matsukazeth (what a name!) had been the brown unfortunate enough to be on the Sands at the same time as the troubled blue. However, this one, A'nt, he believed (Ialluth immediately confirmed), was late. The Weyrlingmaster frowned and considered his options. No one else was stepping forward. He'd do K'lan in a moment, she'd already earned her brownie points, and there was no need to forgive a transgression like lateness with a simple haircut. Besides, it was hardly a punishment if the boy volunteered for it.

"K'lan, A'nt, go see H'dra. He'll help you." Dismissing the volunteers to work with his assistant, F'sey faced the raced of the crowd.

"You. Mouthy lad with the blue."

Redhath, Ialluth informed him quietly.

"M'al, was it? Come here. You're first."

Ialluth sighed. Hers would make it difficult, wouldn't he?

"And you." He pointed to Rinfala. "With the attitude. You're next."

Oh, he'd fix their little wagons.

"Um....sir?"

W'in didn't like interrupting F'sey, but after he had given W'in the instruction, well...W'in had to speak up. Every time he tried to ask Toronth where his shoes were, the blue's mind went completely blank to him, and no matter how many times he tried to reach the location, nothing doing.

"I, um...don't know where my shoes are. My dragon took them."

And I did a good job of it, too, Toronth remarked very quietly to W'in, radiating pride. There was a lot of work to do, but he was getting it done come hell or high water.

M’al knew he should stop. Logically, the smart thing to do would be to shut up and cut his losses. But, there was always a little voice saying, ‘Hey, this doesn’t make sense! Point that out to him!’ Besides, he was pretty sharding certain he’d already gotten himself into F’sey’s bad books. No good would be done by keeping his mouth shut and it wasn’t like things could get any worse.

“So… when you said ‘welcome to the life of a dragonrider’, sir, what you really meant was ‘welcome to the life of a weyrling’. Because otherwise it sounds like you mean the haircuts are regulation for everyone.” Which clearly wasn’t true, judging by F’sey’s own longish hair.

And there it was. He had just been volunteered, just as he suspected. He ran his hands through his hair again with a quiet sigh. Well, it would grow back soon enough. The real danger was letting F’sey anywhere near his neck with sharp objects. “Of course, sir. It’s only hair…”

For all of his fussing, he didn’t care so much about his hair. Giving Redhath another affectionate scratch, M’al went to stand nearby F’sey, as confident as ever. Actually, inwardly, he was mildly worried that F’sey would intentionally botch the haircut.

Meanwhile, Redhath was still trying to understand what was going on. Oh, and snickering over His. The Blue, for one, was certain that F’sey would get some sort of revenge on the Blue weyrling. It was bound to be amusing.

"Mine they are so small! I wish we could have said a proper hello to them at the feast but you were not paying attention to anyone. I am very sad that I do not know many of their names. You should ask them for me."

Go sit with Ialluth and talk to her. I need to focus. H'dra felt a mixture of pleasure, uncertainty and irritation from the blue, but he seemed to do as he was told. Dievath wasn't exactly the most comfortable dragon around the girls, but Ialluth was kind to him, as was C'ren's green Ceylith. They were the mothering sort – or so the blue had informed him – and thus they were easier to deal with. He never had to say much in their presence, but they kept him thoroughly occupied. It was a nice arrangement, and one that H'dra enjoyed thoroughly at times like this. He needed to focus.

Taking a deep breath, he offered F'sey a small smile when the man looked over in his direction, before turning his attention to the arriving weyrlings. Try as he may to look the part of Assistant Weyrlingmaster, he couldn't help but feel that he was among the youngest in this room. It wasn't his fault he had Impressed so young (nor was it his fault that he was one of the few riders F'sey could stand but there you have it). Still, his mentor had chosen him and he would do everything in his power to live up to the man's expectations. Even if it involved putting a bowl on the weyrling's heads and cutting their hair.

He let F'sey do all the talking, standing still and straight in the back of the room. The bluerider only flinched a little when some of the weyrlings protested to the impromptu haircut, but it seemed like F'sey had them in good order so he relaxed. Trust the older man to know what he was doing with the sassier of the bunch. When he was given two weyrlings to tend to, H'dra stepped forward and nodded to the chair near his feet. "If you'll just sit here, K'lan and A'nt, I don't mind who goes first." He was thankful he had learned to shear sheep before he came here, otherwise the idea of trimming hair with nerves like his would have worried him sick. "I'm H'dra, by the way, of blue Dievath. Did you guys enjoy the hatching feast?"
