So, I recently learned from a friend about a new horror movie due to be released by Universal Studios: The Repossession Mambo. Some of you already know that Repo was first taken to Universal before Lionsgate - so, do you feel that they used too heavy a springboard of Repo and Necromerchant's Debt? Personally, I'm very angry to see this, because Repo had very little endorsement to show its existence. BUT - thankfully, there is us. There is the fanbase to prove what came first.

If played correctly, this could come off as an entirely different movie and could be seen as having nothing to do with Repo whatsoever, it could even, potentially, be a very good film if they work the plot well and avoid the true spirit of Repo.

Spoons:
Do you think Repo's influence is too strong in the Mambo?
How do you feel about the Mambo?
Are you going to see it? Are you going to boycott?
How do you feel about this emerging film?

Now its called Repo Men. gonk They srsly need to sueeee. But I believe that Terrance said that they can't do anything about it since Lionsgate is the copyright owner.. and they're not doing anything about it.

You know...it sounds almost like a spin off story...almost like a fanfic...
It's kind of like a compliment really!

In my mind I kind of have to see it to see how much it copies Repo and the like.
But I do hate that they are doing this! Why can't they get their own freaking original idea!

What I may do is go see it, and compare it to Repo. See how many comparisons I can make... and most likely never watch it again. I really disapprove of lack of originality. stare

Masquerade! Paper faces on parade. Masquerade!

Repo Men is a complete ripoff from Repo!, and there is proof in many incidents while TZ, DS, and DLB tried to get a company to sport the movie as well as when filming it. The Universal people were in adjacent rooms as they were working on mastering the whole thing and the Repo! peeps would overhear the others listening in on them. Universal purposely took the idea and began filming it in a non musical fashion at the same time Repo! was being filmed, and right next door to them in Toronto as well. They bribed people working on Repo! to go to them instead and in return would receive double pay. A few people went, but most were loyal to Repo! and stayed to see it through. The book it was "based on" came out way after the film was completed and was not written up at all at the time of the production of the movie.

Lionsgate needs to get off its lazy a** and actually do something about this. It is completely ridiculous and not right that TZ and DS get s**t while Universal will get a bagillion dollars off of this Repo! clone. My advice: spread the word once Repo Men is set to come on that Repo! was first and Univeral decided to steal the idea. Tell people that Repo! is part of a three part story titled "Necromerchant's Debt", a stage play that came about many years ago while TZ and DS were making their ten minute operas and was featured in LA and NYC. Let everyone know that Repo! is the TRUE organ repossession movie and NOTHING, not even Universal or the stupid claim of it being based off a none existent book at the time, will be able to change that. Spread the word of Repo! and correct anyone that says otherwise. Universal is in for a rude awakening if it thinks it will be safe from the Repo! fanbase.

Personally, if I do go see this movie I think I will be like other protesting fans and buy a ticket to another movie and sneak into this one and sort of do shoutouts and maybe even get my a** moving in the aisles... Universal does not deserve my money at all after screwing over so many people.

I back you a hundred a trillion thousancd infinite percent!
Make flyers and go around town screaming "Have you heard the good news about REPO!" (well you can't exactly scream since then you'd probably be arrested for disturbing the peace but you can still tell people!)
The first Repo drawing/art piece thing is almost like a poster for it. It has the title, the rating, who's playing in it, who directed it,came up with the idea, and the music producer (A.K.A DS TZ DLB and JB) It's actually pretty informative!

Haha.. finally even thought It doesn't have to do anything with Repo! now is a great opportunity for Lionsgate to get involved also.. if they care.

Alex Cox Versus Universal: Fight!

Yesterday in Page 2 I mentioned that the title of Universal’s Repossession Mambo had been changed to Repo Men, and wondered if fans of Alex Cox’s awesome Repo Man might be a little irritated. Being in a bit of a rush to put that page together, I didn’t think about how Alex Cox might feel. And the answer is: a little peeved. See, Cox has a new film called Repo Chick that could be hitting soon, and he’s faced a threat from Universal over the title and script. Now that the studio has retitled their film to sound like a sequel to his, things could get nasty.

Here’s the basic rundown. Repossession Mambo, with Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, was shot early last year (not ‘two years ago’ as Cox claims) and has been slated for release later this year. But Universal owns Repo Man and sent Alex Cox a cease and desist letter when he started work on Repo Chick, claiming that he was making an ‘illegal sequel’. (Supposedly the film isn’t a sequel, as it has different characters and settings.) Cox ignored that missive and went about his business. Cox’s film is set to premiere at the Venice film fest this fall, and the obvious supposition is that Universal has retitled Repossession Mambo as a punitive measure. But why take my word for it, when Cox’s version is so entertaining. In a blog post called Repo Men? Please… Cox says:

If studio goons had any brains, they’d buy REPO CHICK and market the bijaziz out of it as if it were a sequal to REPO MAN. It isn’t really; it’s a story of different characters in a different world: but truth never gets in the way of the marketing department, whether it’s pixels or Prozac. That I understand.

What I wasn’t prepared for was the e-mail Jon Davison sent me today: an article reporting that “Universal’s embattled execs” were putting their big hairy monster picture on hold, and rushing out a film called REPO MEN.

What?

REPO MEN is definitely not a sequel to my film. I still have a contract with these guys and - if they ever want to make a film based on my original work - they have to ask me to direct it. What fun that would be! But it seems The Studio has, among its souvenirs, a Jude Law thriller called THE REPOSSESSION MAMBO, shot in Canada, almost two years ago. I’m sure this is an excellent film, which Universal accidentally forgot to distribute, and now are passing off, in their innocence, as the new REPO MAN. Only a cynical person might see any attempt to catch the upward draft of REPO CHICK, and give loft to a turkey.

REPO CHICK ain’t REPO MAN, or REPO MEN. These MEN have nothing to do with me. For shame!

Go, go Alex Cox. You’ve got to love the guy, always willing to scrap with the studios. I really hope Repo Chick is good. I don’t know exactly when Repo Man became one of my very favorite films, but it isn’t getting knocked off the high country of my favorite list any time soon.

Seems to me that it's partly co-incidence. I don't think that the content of Repossession Mambo/Repo Men is plagiarised from Repo!, but the fact that it being produced by Universal when they were happy to do Repo! if the music was taken out is highly, hell, transparently, suspect.

The idea that you could repossess organs from the living isn't so far fetched, if you look at the American health system where money buys your life. It's only a few logical steps away. From what I hear the Mambo plot is pretty different to Repo!, sharing only a Repo man rebelling against his employer.

I don't think Universal commissioned a Repo! without songs, they happened to find a pitch that was sufficiently similar to fill the same gap.

They are claiming it was filmed in 2008!? BULL ******** s**t! There is no way in hell they would be able to make that accusation in court and win by any means. The Repo! people have proof and I will be damned if a judge and/or jury find otherwise.

God, Alex Cox should sue and maybe then Lionsgate would take a hint and do something about all this crap. Universal is being a ******** b*****d. I bet they changed it from Repossession Mambo to Repo Men as to avoid conflict with us Repo! fans. Well, the cat has been out of the bag since day one so their idea just pissed off more people that are actually willing to do something. They are in a s**t load of trouble if this gets taken to court. Alex can get the Repo! people in there as witnesses at the very least and you know the boomerang is coming back harder at the ******** up company ready to ruin their good name.

Alex Cox and the Repo! fans, UNITE! *raises pitchforks and torches into the air*

Mazz: Actually, it is plagiarized material with only minor changes added in. The idea was never really around until Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich made their ten minute opera that turned into a stage play that was ultimately turned into Repo!. Universal could be sued, but Lionsgate is still all loosey goosey with Repo! and does not care if it gets completely plagiarized or not.

You'd think they'd hold off at least 5 years or so before remaking the same damn movie we just saw. Jackasses.

I'm not sure how dumb/shallow/genre exploitive they think we Repo! fans are, but I'm going to go ahead and personally draw the line before the proposed first studio spinning off the script without the original writers' permission.

As a fan and a playwright, I am offended. And I'm offended for TZ that Lionsgate isn't going to do s**t to protect his work.

I have no problem with Alex Cox or Repo Chick. That's his sequel to his own work ("Repo Man", 1984). The fact that Universal is trying to convince everyone else that it's plagarism of "their work" is absurd and I am elated that Alex Cox has the ability to defend himself in his situation. I sincerely hope everything works in his favor.

If only the same could happen for our Repo! men....

Bugger. I had hoped there were some genuinely creative, innocent people mixed up in this.

I am getting REALLY pissed about this! It just sucks really and we can't do that much about it. I agree with [Mother.War.] that the most we really can do is tell ANYONE AND EVERYONE about REPO! It doesn't matter if they like it or not they at least saw it and are encouraged to like it or tell other people.

Finally looked it up on wiki/IMDB, and that's a total rip-off of Repo!
IMDB Summary
Set in the near future when artificial organs can be bought on credit, it revolves around a man who struggles to make the payments on a heart he has purchased. He must therefore go on the run before said ticker is repossessed.

O.o
Sounds like Repo!, told from the point of a reposessed rather than a repo man.
Plus, that name change is mighty odd...though Repo Men! isn't much better.

Only thing I can't find is if it has songs or not. neutral
