Dune was meandering the edges of the swamps, the sun could penetrate the leaves here, and it's light fell in a dappled pattern on his light coat. He sighed, content, he enjoyed nothing more then the twilight between swamp and desert. His belly was full from his recent hunting expedition in the flatlands, the sweet taste of desert snake meat still lingered in his mouth. All in all he was a very content buck. He spotted a lush patch of grass, and after taking a sip from a near-by pond he curled up and lay down. His eyes opened and closed lazily as the heat dulled his mind and sleep suffused his senses. This is as good as it gets, if only I had someone to share such perfect days with.. Dune slipped into a dreamland where beautiful does winked saucily at him. Pure bliss...

User Image Cold-Blood was wandering the edges of the swamp, a slight bit of worry leaking into her mannerisms every so often. Glint was missing. She had lost track of him earlier that day. Generally she doesn't worry like this, but it had been hours since she had last seen him and he hadn't even checked in. What if something happened to him? He and Shadow were the closest thing to a family that Cold-Blood had. Surely it wasn't insane for her to begin to worry for his well-being after this much time. She just wanted to know he was alright, that's all.

And so she snuffled through the undergrowth along the edges of the swamp, looking for her golden snake companion. She knew he liked to head out into the fringes of the flatlands sometimes to bask in the glowering sun. This was why she had come here, while she preferred the bits of lush swamp, not that she hated it here. There were lush bits here... but you tended to get much more prey further into Mother Swamp.

Dune was stirred from his pleasant dreams by a curious rustling. How irksome, I was enjoying my sleep. He raised his head and blinked groggily, the dream doggedly clinging to his thoughts, refusing to slip away. When his eyes finally focused he saw a pretty doe poking through the underbrush. She was dark green and looked sleek, predatory and slightly dangerous, very interesting to a buck like him. He grinned stupidly, thinking this was another part of his dream. He raised on shaking legs and put on what he thought was an alluring face. "Hey beautiful, will you wink saucily at me if I ask nicely?" He wobbled on his unsteady legs, almost falling over, this caused him to giggle. Now those observing might call Dune a dork, or perhaps just plain awkward. But one must remember that he is a very young buck, and this was the only full grown doe he has ever seen, and she was a pretty one at that.

Cold-Blood looked up to see what looked like a buck that had just rolled in sand after having stepped into a puddle of water speaking to her. She snorted at what he asked and as she passed him, her tail happened to swish... straight into his face.

She kept walking, shrugging off the buck's random request, and continued to look for her snake. She made the occasional hiss or click, to which her companions would usually respond. Still no sign of Glint. She stopped and looked up over the flatlands. A soft breeze caressed her face, causing her to close her eyes for just a moment. She had nearly forgotten about the buck that could barely walk. She let her eyes wander in his direction, without completely acknowledging him. Was he drunk? she asked herself as she took in the sight.

Dune blinked furiously as his eyes watered. She hit me in the eye! The sudden rush of pain was enough to clear his thoughts and he realized this was definitely not one of the saucy ladies from his dreams. She was something different, a challenge?
He realized what he had said and a blush feathered across his cheeks. He stood a little straighter, hoping to regain even a shred of his dignity. He took one cautious step closer to the doe, noticing her strange behavior. Is she hissing??
"Um.. excuse me miss, I am sorry for my earlier comment, I was half asleep and I was dreaming of.... well never mind. I am sorry. Are you ok? Why are you hissing?"
He tilted his head, studying the doe, startled as he noticed the dark snake wrapped tightly around her leg he retreated a step, losing all progress. He eyed the snake, thinking it looked tasty, but he was full, and this female was not scared of the snake on her so he assumed she would not take kindly to him eating her companion.

She watched as he blinked furiously, then blushed, then straightened. How very amusing. A smile crept onto her lips that she could not restrain. What an amusing creature... He approached her now with apologies and more questions. But before she had a chance to reply, he recoiled a step.

She bent her head down to nuzzle the snake that had just outstretched his body as if he were showing off in front of the other male. That smile was still straddling her features as she replied softly, "This is Shadow, and I have lost my other companion, Glint. He's all gold, and otherwise similar to Shadow. I have learned a few of their hisses, and that particular one was a call. He's been lost since early this morning." She watched the buck as she spoke, curious whether the earlier stint was just a slip of his mind, or if it happened often. "Do you ask every doe that passes you to wink at you 'saucily'?" She asked with a lilt of teasing in her voice. "Or was it 'just me'?" She knew lines like that, and though they wouldn't get a male anywhere, the occasional one could be amusing.

As the doe spoke Dune blushed even more red then before. He cast his eyes down shyly.
"No.. I was half-asleep and I saw you and.. umm.. well I have actually never seen a doe, at least not one worth looking at before now. I never say things like that, it was really stupid of me, I'm sorry. I think I was just caught off guard.."
He stared at his hooves and wished he would stop saying dumb things. She must think I am a complete moron. He decided to change the subject:
"His name is Shadow? He's really is a handsome fellow. So his friend.. Glint? Is missing? I could help you look, I spend a lot of time down here.."
He trailed off and still had not raised his eyes, doing so now, he realized he hadn't introduced himself yet.
"Er.. my name is Dune," he blushed even harder as he met her gaze, "But you can call me Grit."
He shuffled off to a bush less than a foot away and started to hiss. His hissing was decidedly less impressive than hers, slightly garbled, but he was trying.

She watched as the young buck continued to speak. He was talking himself in a circle, and at the very least, it was rather amusing. That smile had still not left her lips when he finished talking. His cheeks were now thoroughly red when he walked away to start looking for Glint. It took a moment for her to realize she should probably respond.

"I would be very grateful if you helped me look for Glint. I'm worried something happened to him. He usually checks in..." She looked down at her feet, trying to dispel all the horrid thoughts that crossed her mind. Grit, he said she could call him. A softer expression took over her features when he divulged his nickname. "I'm Cold-Blood. Nice to meet you, Grit." She was not yet ready to offer her own nickname, as she wasn't sure if he was just trying to cover up his embarrassment by offering his.

Dune nodded in response, glad she wasn't calling him out on his obvious deficiencies.
"Does Glint have a favorite spot? A place he would likely be?"
He continued to poke though the bushes, imitating her hiss, and muttering to himself.
"Here little snakey, you should come out, your mom looks worried. Here Glint."

She began shuffling through the bushes nearby once more, looking for Glint, too. "I know he likes going into the edges of the Flatlands, sometimes. He likes the sun, you see, and out there he can nestle in the sand and bask in the sun. He blends in pretty well, too, so he's usually well protected in his camouflage." She brings her head back up and looks out to the dusty expanse to their right. He could be out there... but she wanted to check this treeline, just in case. And she had never actually been out into the Flatlands, just along it's border with Mother Swamp. "But I wanted to check this border before venturing out there." She nodded towards the flatlands, and responded, still looking out at the dusty flats, "Do you know the area?"

Dune tilted his head quizzically. A gold snake, basking in the sun.. His gaze went distant as images floated across his mind.
One of his favorite places in the flatlands, a large, smooth rock. He remembered the few times he went there for a better vantage point. The latest time he had turned back, because lying straight in the middle of the stone was a snake, not a regular brown desert snake, a bright, glittering golden snake. It's eyes alert, tongue flicking in and out lazily.
He jumped slightly, his eyes refocused and he realized he had been staring at Cold-Blood. He lowered his gaze again.
I think I know where he is, I have seen him there before. There is a rock, not very far from the edge of the swamp, and it is perfectly smooth. Not too long ago I saw a golden snake basking there, it is near an oasis so none of the desert snakes go there. They prefer to hunt somewhere drier.
He stopped talking and looked at Cold-Blood, wondering if she would follow him, if she even believed him. He yearned to go into the desert, somewhere familiar to wash away the fluttery feeling in his stomach. A feeling no doubt caused by this beautiful stranger.

He was quiet for a few moments, and Cold-Blood found this odd. He seemed to be rather talkative, so why was he being silent? She turned to look at him just as he lowered his gaze. He must have been staring at me! She couldn't help but grin at this thought as she listened to him speak of his sighting. She looked around the area they had just searched and then back at Dune. "Show me. We've searched all over the swamp, so the only other option would be out there." Cold-Blood glanced out to the flatlands to catch a glimpse of the sandy expanse. It was going to be hot.

Dune looked up, startled. She believed me. She.. trusts me? Alright, well since it is not very far we do not need to gather any supplies. It is always a good idea to drink something though...
He wandered over to a near-by pond and dipped his muzzle into it, his throat undulating as he swallowed. He looked up,
Drink up, and lets go find your little friend.
He felt cocky now that they were heading into his habitat, he could almost forget the stomach tingling effects the doe had on him. He strode to the edge of the swamp and flicked his head to look at her, he winked in a way that could only be described as 'saucy.' He waited.

She followed the young buck over to the pond, and followed suit. Gulping down a good amount of water as her eyes drifted closed. She felt a slight rub along her leg, and without opening her eyes knew it had to be Shadow sliding down to get a drink, too. She brought up her head, thirst quenched. Water dripped from her muzzle, but she ignored it, waiting for Shadow to return to her. She stood there, looking out into the flatlands with a determined look on her face. She would find Glint, even if it meant going into the great Unknown.

When Shadow slithered up her leg and draped himself around her neck, cheek nuzzling hers, she strode upto Dune. She caught a flicker of his eyelids, and her only response was to raise an eyebrow at him. Was he winking at me? Saucily?!

Grit snorted once, pleased that they were set to go so quickly. His eyes went distant, remembering the first time he had taken others to the Desert, that was a disaster. He pushed the thoughts from his mind.
He stepped out into the Flatlands, stopping roughly ten paces from the swamp, looking about to orient himself. He closed his eyes, feeling the wind ruffle his fur, tugging like mischievous ghosts, whispering in his ears where he wanted to go. This was a method of navigation that not even he truly understood, but it had always been this way, so he gave it no thought. He took a few more steps in the proper direction. He stopped and waited for Cold-Blood to pull up beside him. He did not want to walk too far ahead and annoy him. He did not know quite why, but he wanted her to like him, and he didn't think stomping on her nerves would accomplish that. His stomach did a nervous little dance as he pictured her in a rage, it was not a pleasant image.
All the more reason for you to find her little pet. It would put you in her good graces, even better, she would be indebted to me. A grin stretched his face while his naive side though, What good would her being indebted to me do? She has nothing I want.
You must pity a young male's mind, it is so confused.
