Neshaka sometimes wondered why anyone would want to be a stay at home mom. She tried to take Dashiell places, in the hope that he'd be quiet for a while, but it never seemed to work that way. She growled quietly as she studied the floor plans and attempted to devise a plan, but her concentration was broken by a cacaphony of noise from the kitchen. She rose, and made her way over. Her pots and pans lay in disarray all over the floor, save for those that Dashiell had picked up, and was attempting to build a tower with.
"Hi mom!" he said with a beam in her direction. It quickly faded as he noticed her face. Neshaka could only sigh.
"I need a holiday."

On reflection this was one of her better plans. She looked out over the edge of her laptop screen, and could still see Dashiell further down the beach, building a fort. It was rather peaceful, giving her an opportunity to work, while Dashiell wore himself out charging from one end of the beach to the other. Taking a moment to enjoy herself, she stretched out in the chair and lay back in the sun.

In the summer, living on the beach was both a gift and a curse. It made an awkward, fumbling trip that most people made in the summer a simple trip into the back yard! Unfortunately, said back yard was full of hundreds and hundreds of all different sorts of people.

Henri sighed, watching Izzy (and everyone else, for that matter) from a lawn chair high on on the rocks, trying in vain to fill out an accident report for the coastguard. Izzy was having her fun scampering around the beach in her little bathing suit, laughing and disturbing all of the uppity adults. When she spotted another kid with "funny parts", she did not hesitate to run over to him.

"Watcha doin'?!" she asked, grinning from ear to ear.

Dashiell, deeply engrossed by the intricacies of making a proper sand fort cringed a little as he saw someone charge his way. But fortunately, they didn't seem to have destroyed anything.
"Building a fort." Duuuuh. Girls seriously didn't know anything. He carefully swept up a pile of sand to form another section of wall. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted something.
"Hey, you're like me! Well, sorta." He flicked his antenna in interest.

"Yeah, yeah!" Izzy chirped, not really interested in what the boy had to say past the word 'fort'.

"I have some stuff! Good stuff! Wan' me to get my stuff to make a good fowt?" Again, with the mysteriously disappearing speech impediment.

Dashiell flicked his wings. Well, at least girls were useful.
"Sure! What kind of stuff?" Until now, he'd been using his hands. He barely noticed her odd speech, and was trying to figure out what kind of animal she was. Neshaka had shown him dragonflies, and he'd seen their wings and tails, but he'd never seen anything with a shell like that. He'd ask if he couldn't figure it out, for now he just peered at her over his fort.

"Tawp," Izzy said, practically bouncing, "A tawp on sticks!" Daddy had made it for her forts, a large piece of fabric with 7 wooden poles holding up 3 edges. It was shady and nice!

"An'...um. Wocks."

Rocks were everywhere, and made nice hiding places!

Tawp? What was a tawp? Well, at least the sticks might be useful.
And rocks. Weell.
"Okay, let's find some stones to prop the fort up with." He stood, shaking himself down. Maybe they could race. He could see a patch of stones further along.
"What about those?" he said, pointing.

Izzy had already started off to ask her father for the tarp, but she turned with wide eyes when she was addressed.

"Su'w!" she agreed, pointing up at her father who was standing and waiting for her, "I gedda tawp, you gedda wocks!" It made perfect sense to her. Everyone did their part!

Dashiell flicked his eyes up where she had pointed, and thought he saw a shadow of someone. He toddled off to find Neshaka again. She flicked a smile at him over her laptop.
"There's someone else here like me!" he exclaimed at her.

"Well, that's interesting. Are they nice?" Dashiell shrugged with one shoulder.

"Don't know. Anyway, time to find rocks!" And with that, he set off headlong to the patch he'd seen, where he could gather up a pile of sturdy, flat stones.

He made his way more slowly back to the fort, where he started pushing them into the base to make it stronger.

Izzy had not yet met a person who she didn't find nice, and that was certainly saying something, as she had spent entire days with Zach. She trusted that this buggy-boy would be nice too!

"Whaddya need, Izzyboo?" Henri asked, crouching and smiling.

"The tawp! Gunna make'a fowt!"

"You made a new friend?"

"Yep!"

"Good for you!" Henri grinned and wandered off behind the house, coming back with the not-so-perfectly-named tarp (it was fabric, not woven plastic). it was nerly twice as tall as Izzy, but she insisted on carrying it herself every time.

...or...err. Dragging it.

"I GODDIT!"

Dashiell was piling up the stones, and was setting out to make a third side to his wall, which reached to his knees. He looked up after a while to see the girl coming back, dragging some kind of thing with her. The "tawp"?

He stood up and ran over to pick up the other end of it, Neshaka having drilled some amount of helpfulness into him.

Izzy was a bit surprised that she had gotten help. She stared at the boy for a moment, eyes wide and mouth open, and then just laughed and happily walked ahead of him, standing the tarp up once they got there.

"'Kay. Dese," she explained, pointing to an edge with 3 wooden poles, "Go in d'back."

Dashiell sniffed at being laughed at, but rested the poles on his head to carry them to the fort.

He held on the edge she pointed to with a confused look on his face, then attempted to stick the poles in the ground behind the fort.
"Like that?"

"Ya!" Izzy nodded, rushing over to help. She had not laughed at him so much as just laughed. She was a strange girl, that was for certain.

"Dese go on d'sides," she said, pointing to what but the other sides, 2 poles each. She went to do one, hoping the boy would do the other.

Dashiell went to push the other side in. It was actually kinda like a fort already, being so tall.

"Maybe we should just make a big wall there" he said, pointing to the open edge. He looked at the walls he'd already made, not really wanting to destroy them.
