A weatherstained journal, covered in leather, looked rather worse for the wear. In some places, the leather was wearing thin, in other spots it was waterstained and scuffed. It did not close properly, the pages inside, jus as worn as the outside, were dog-eared and clipped together, the cover reamining slightly open as if expecting a hand to pick up a pen and write in it once more. However, for all of it's worn dingyness, the journal had one redeeming quality.
On the front cover a pair of tiger eyes were tooled into the leather, still retaining their original intense colors despite the abuse the journal itself has gone through.

Your Herald is now a child with a personality all her own. Except for the wings, it's almost easy to forget that she was once an angel, isn't it? Even she seems to have forgotten. But the past hasn't forgotten her...

Your Herald has been dredging up odd bits and phrases from some hidden corner of the mind.

What are the words? What do they mean, and how does this fragment of memory return?

When you come upon the scene, it is a weak and dying Herald that you find, unable even to stand. A few scattered feathers on the ground are the only remnants of the wings it once possessed. It has come to this place to die...or be saved? That, of course, is up to you.

You are alone when you find the angel. The Heralds have long gone unsaved, and though it appears to you, it does not hold much hope of living on. Near to where the two of you meet rests a grey stone slab that the angel seems desperate to reach. With your help, the Herald climbs upon it, needing something from you to save its life. What will you choose to give it? And what significance does that item hold for you? Is it a family heirloom? Something you happened to have on hand? Something you'd purchased earlier that day? A lucky charm

The Sacrifice

Cassie Rain was packing up her gear just before dawn. Zoe something-a-rather had commissioned Cassie to take pictures of bats for her magazine, and bats being nocturnal she had been up all night. She used a special light so she could get quality pictures of the bats without harming them with bright lights. When she finished packing all her things into the side car of her motorcycle she climbed onto the bike and pulled on her helmet and goggles. She had been up all night and was hungry, so she went to one of those 24 hour places and picked up some stuff to eat. She sat and drank a half pint of milk while eating a cinnamon bun before setting off again, deciding to leave the rest of her food for when she got home.

The large motorcycle sped down the highway, heading out of town. Cassie turned off the highway and onto an old country road, which in short was really her driveway because there were no other houses on the road. As Cassie yawned a little she notices light coming from a clearing that was a little ways up the road.

'that's odd...'

she thought as she drove a little fast to get closer not wanting to miss it, what ever "it" was. When she reached the area were the light was coming from she noticed

'I know this area... dear like to graze here...'

But there were no dear in the clearing, not today. At first she didn't know what to think, slowly she pulled her goggles down around her neck to get a clearer look. There a little ways from the tree line was the source of the light. A being was slowly drifting to the ground feathers fluttering around it. Quickly Cassie dug into her side car and pulled out her camera quickly she took several pictures of the sight. She then put the camera back into the side car and jumped from her bike. She moved across to the field and jumped the ditch to the field, as she neared the light faded away. Cassie knelt beside the figure. She looked at the beings face and saw unearthly blue eyes.

For a moment their eyes were locked until the beings eyes closed in a wince of pain. Cassie gasped and thought,

'Okay. This being just fell from the sky,'

She looked around at the last of the white feathers around them,
and it looks like it lost its wings. Cassie took in the sight of the pale white being with even lighter hair. She was unable to tell the gender, but nonetheless "it" was beautiful with those shocking blue eyes.

While the woman was thinking this the being was trying to move. Cassie put her hand on the heavenly creature and said,

"Let me help you."

The being nodded and Cassie scooped "it" into her arms and started to walk back to her bike. Before she could explain her actions the creature started to struggle frantically. Cassie carefully dropped to her knee and sat the being down, afraid she might hurt it. When put down, the white thing pointed. Cassie turned to see what it was pointing to, and saw a large stone slab in the middle of the field.

"I don't understand why you want to got there, but i understand that you do so i will take you there."

Cassie scooped the being into her arms again and started to walk toward the stone. As she walked she sorted through all the myths she had read and heard about,

What kind of beings fall from the sky, and beings without a gender? That narrows it down quiet i bit...not a god, that's for sure. A sprite maybe or a Spirit. Wait! I know this being is a fallen angel! A Herland? No that's not it..A Herald! that's right... now... why do they fall, right a fallen messenger. No wings? Oh i remember! This poor soul is dieing and needs a sacrifice right?

Cassie and the being reached the stone and carefully Cassie lay it on the cold stone. The Herald lay out on the frigid stone and sighed softly.

It needs a sacrifice...

The first item that came into Cassie's mind was the tiger striped helmet she still wore. Quickly she removed the helmet from her head and lay it beside the beautiful creature.

"Please. Take this and live."

The beautiful person in front of Cassie lay a hand on the helmet and a light started to glow around it. As she watched the light grew brighter. Just as she moved to cover her eyes from the blinding light she saw her helmet starting to fad away. When the light faded away Cassie looked again to see the Herald not moving and her helmet gone. For a moment she feared that it was to late, but then the Herald opened its eyes.

Just then a frigid wind blew and caused Cassie to shiver a little. Quickly she pulled off her jacket and lay it on the Herald.

"I'll be right back okay?"

The herald closed its eyes but Cassie caught its slight nod before she ran back to her bike. After a moment of digging Cassie pulled several things from her side car and ran back to the herald. Gently Cassie took the jacket back from the Herald who looked at her almost angry that she was taking away its warmth. But then Cassie wrapped the blanket, she herself had used less than an hour before to stay warm, around the herald. She then took another blanket and wrapped that one around it too, this one was water proof and she usually used it to keep her gear dry. The cold air blew again, this time the Herald pulled the warmth of the blankets closer. Cassie sat on the stone and pulled the herald against herself. She had noticed when moving the being that it had been almost deathly cold.

"i don't have much, but would you like something to eat?"

Slowly the Herald nodded and looked up at Cassie who smiled down at it. The sun was starting to rise as Cassie fed the herald and help it drink the milk. When she had finished the sun was up and it had warmed considerably. Suddenly Cassie's watch started beeping, she turned it off and looked at the herald who leaned against her asleep. Carefully she lay the being down on the stone using part of the blanket as a pillow she then hurried to her bike and sped off home. She had to take her medication on time or she would be out of sorts for the rest of the day.

The Return

Cassie sped home as fast as she could and moments later she was home. The second she cut the engine Cassie was over the railing of her front porch and at her door unlocking it. When the door was open she was almost knocked off her feet by a mass of furry bodies jumping at her. She quickly caught herself and pet the multitude of critters for a moment before jogging up the stairs to her room. She flipped on the light and sat on her bed.

Due to some of the things that happened in her past Cassie had to take untold amounts of anti-this or anti- that, to keep herself sane. Without even one of these pills could cause her to be depressed and even suicidal. Cassie opened a case labeled Monday and opened it, inside was a rainbow of different colored pills. She grabbed a bottle of water and stated taking the pills several at a time. Less than five minutes later she was sliding down the banister back to the first floor.

"Feeding time!"

The woman opened a sliding door that lead into a large courtyard. Inside was a sight to behold, near the far wall to the left was a huge willow. Then across on the right was a pond, with a fountain. All around her were bushes and plants. There were two buildings that looked similar to a cave, in reality they were more like chicken coop. She had made them herself so she would know, there was one for the dragons and one for the cats. Cassie went to the closet one and opened a drawer that had food dishes. Quickly she poured food into each dish then went to the other "cave" and did the same. Once she was done with the cats and dragons she went to another smaller room and feed the Mongoose.

Cassie then went to her kitchen and got more food. She piled chips, fruit, and threw together several sandwiches. Then she put them into a bag and took off back out to her motorcycle and took off back to were the Herald lay resting. When she got there She saw something that amazed her. She knew that the woods on her property were populated by a multitude of animals. There, around the Herald, seemed to be every animal that lived in the woods. Dear, rabbits, foxes, several different kinds of birds, she even spotted two wolves and a bear. This frightened her a little, most of these animals were mellow and would run from a human, but the bear and wolves would attack if they felt they had to.

Slowly Cassie gathered her bag and moved quietly to the ditch that separated the field from the road. She easily jumped it and landed on the other side. But what happened next made her cringe, she took a step froward and a twig snapped. The human looked up and was face to face with the bear. She swallowed and looked at the large beast that seemed to glare at her. It seemed like forever before the bear moved away followed by the numerous others. They didn't go far however, just past the tree line. Cassie stood there a moment then went to the Heralds side.

The sun had come up by now and the being that was painfully pale before, now seemed to glow a little in the sun light. The Herald looked up at the woman with a small smile pulling at its lips. Cassie smiled and said in a soft voice

"I told you i would be back. I brought more food too, are you hungry?"

The fair being seemed to perk up a little at the mention of food. Cassie moved and sat behind the being and helped it sit up, pulling it to sit with its back to her chest. She then pulled an apple from the bag and cut a bit off and gave it to the Herald. It took the bit of fruit into its mouth and chewed on it. So she fed more of the apple, and two sandwiches before the being was satisfied. When it no longer wanted to eat the being curled up and pressed itself against Cassie. For a moment she wasn't sure what she was supposed to do, but after a moment the human wrapped the fallen angel in her arms and let it rest.

Before long her own stomach made a strange gurgling sound. She was hungry and she knew it but the being was sleeping in her arms. It looked so peaceful, she didn't want to move it so she sat there instead and waited for a while.

A New Friend

Beford she knew it Cassie had fallen asleep due to the fact that she had been up for almost seventy-two hours. When she woke again it was almost sun down and she was hungry. The fair being that still rested against her was sleeping again. The human looked around and could just barely make out the shadows of the animals at the tree line. For a moment she thought about trying to take the being to her home were she knew she would be able to keep it safe. But she had the feeling that if she tried to leave with the herald the bear wouldn't be understanding. It seemed to her that the Being had a connection with the animals and that was way they were hanging around.

With a bit of regret Cassie lightly shook the being awake.

"I'm sorry, but I need to leave again...will you be alright?"

At first the being was unhappy to be woken from its restful peace. But as Cassie spoke it nodded its head.

At the beings response Cassie stood and left the stone. With each step she took the critters at the tree line took a step closer to the herald. By the time she jumped the ditch back to the road, the animals were all around the herald again. She jumped onto her bike and took off back down the road toward her house, this time however she didn't go as fast.

When she got home she parked the bike and climbed off, this time going around to the stairs and walking up them. she unlocked the door and was bombarded by her critters again. She greeted them with a tired voice,

"hey guys, did ya miss me?"

Slowly she made her way into the house her multitude of pets slowly getting out of her way. Quickly she made her rounds to make sure that everyone had water and food. Then she down to the basement were she had a lot of storage, after a while of digging though the masses of things she would most likely never use Cassie pulled several flash lights, a sort of mat that folded out into a chair, and two fleece sleeping bags and a bag that was the equivalent of a cooler. She then carried these things back up stairs and out to her motorcycle, and packed everything away other than the bag. she took that inside and to her kitchen.

For a few minutes she dug around in the cupboards pulling out Tupperware containers of all shapes and sizes. When she had gotten what she needed the woman put the containers on the counter and went about making food to fill them with. Again she made several sandwiches, this time grilled cheese. When each sandwich was done she wrapped it in foil to keep it hot then put it in a foil lined container. While cooking the sandwiches she also made chicken flavored ramen. When that was done she put it into a insulated container.

Then she looked around for something else she could take that wouldn't be too messy. Her eyes landed on a bag of potato chips, she took the bag up and opened it them emptied it into one of the bigger containers. Then she went to her freezer and pulled out a bag of chicken fingers and put them into a deep firer, they would only take about five minutes to cook. while waiting for them to cook she made her way up stairs to her room. Cassie took a small box and put her pills for tomorrow into it and stuck it into her pocket. As she was walking out of her room she saw a book of Scottish names. She picked it up and flipped through it looking for a name she could run past the herald so she could call it by some name. "Fiona" popped out so she read the meaning "meaning Fair or white."

"Perfect i think."

The chicken still had a little while left until it was finished so Cassie took several boxes of juice and other drinks from the cupboard and put them into the bag along with each of the boxes, just as she was finishing that the timer for the chicken went of. Cassie turned off the heat for the oil and took the chicken fingers out and let them dry a moment before packing them away into a container and then into the bag. She then went to a small room were she stored things for her pets, after a moment she collected a food and water dish, then a small bag of food. Cassie then took all these things out and packed them into her side car. It was surprising how much stuff she could fit in the thing.

Cassie then went back inside and looked at her numerous pets, then called

"Sandy come."

The mongoose that looked exactly like a Springbok (African wild dog) looked up at her then skittered to her side. Cassie knelt and scratched the critter behind the ears a little befoer putting her into a harness then taking an extending leash and stake. She gathered these things up and hefted her second largest mongoose up and carried her out to her bike, locking the door as she went. Cassie loaded up and made sure Sandy was secure in the side bag before heading off back to the field were the herald was.

When she arrived by the field again the woodland animals were still there, the sun was going down and she was loosing light. Cassie said

"Stay Sandy. stay."

The mongoose stay were she was as Cassie jumped over the ditch this time she didnt land on a twig. she softly called to the Herald,

"I'm back again and I brought a friend."

Slowly Cassie approached and the animals moved away this time. When the woman reached the heralds side she asked.

"Would you like to meet my friend?"

For a moment the being looked at the human before nodding. Cassie smiled and whistled. Sandy jumped from the bag and bounded over the ditch, then to Cassie and into her waiting arms. She turned to the Herald and said,

"This is Sandy, do you want her to stay with you when I'm not here?"

Cassie squatted holding Sandy out so the herald could reach out if it wanted to. Sandy stretched her neck trying to get closer to the herald to sniff it. After a moment of inspections the herald reached out to pet the interesting critter. Sandy sniffed her hand as it went to pet her. After a moment Cassie let the mongoose climb into the Heralds lap were she curled up and was petted.

"I have a few things i need to get, but I'm only going to my bike okay?"

The herald nodded content with its new friend. Cassie straitened and went back to her bike taking the mats, flash lights and sleeping bags from the car and jumped the ditch putting them near the stone slab, then she returns for the food and drink. When she was by the heralds side again she started to explain.

"I brought a few things to make you more comfortable. A mat, that you can use if you wish to sit up but relax as well, another blanket, this one is extremely warm. I also brought more food. Grilled cheese, chicken ramen, and chicken fingers. Here is the mat, can i set it up for you?"

The herald inspected the mat for a moment then nodded. When it did Cassie took it and set it up so the herald could sit on it and eat easily, then she lay the water proof blanket cross the mat and unzipped a sleeping back and lay it out so the being could sit on it while on the mat. She then helped the fair being to sit on the mat, once comfortable Cassie zipped the sleeping bag up around the herald so that it was up around its middle, then she took the second blanket from before and wrapped it around the beings shoulders, then she took the water proof blanket and folded it up around the being to keep it dry.

"Do you have a name?"

The herald shook its head as Sandy moved back into its lap to be pet some more.

"Can i give you one?"

It nodded yes,

"How about Fiona? Its Scottish, and means "fair" or "white", i think that suits you..."

The fair being thought on it for a moment then nodded yes again with a smile on its face.

"Well then Fiona, I don't think I have told you my name yet, it is Cassie Millia Rain, and I am honored that you accepted my helmet as a sacrifice for your new wings."

As she spoke Cassie took the food from the insulated bag and asked,

"what would you like, soup or sandwiches?"

She held up the two items. Fiona looked at them a moment then pointed to the sandwiches. Cassie smiled and took a sandwich from its container and put it into the its hand. Fiona bit into it and started to eat. her free hand was petting Sandy's back. Cassie noticed this and started,

"Do you like Sandy? I have had her for a while, though not as long has Shori. Shori is my largest Mongoose, i have had her the longest. The funny thing is, when i got her she was the runt of the litter and her mother wouldn't care for her, so I took this tiny baby into my home and cared for her. Sandy, she is my second largest. I have a lot of pets, Fish and mongoose and even some dragons. Not large dragons mind you, the largest is about the size of my fists like this"

Cassie put her fists together to demonstrate. Like that Cassie talked on and on, she was not usually a talkative person, but the herald didn't talk back to her so she didn't feel judged. And so that was how she passed the night.

You sit inside, protected and comfortable as the weather rages outside. The evening meal is on the table, and you're filled with an intense feeling of well-being.

Your mind veers, against your will, to the dying creature that you had come across. It certainly wouldn?t be comfortable tonight. What are you thinking? It's probably already long gone. But...what if it isn't?

Cassie was working in her basement darkroom developeing the resent pictures she had taken. Her deadline was tomorow and she needed to get them done. When she was finially finished developing the pictures she came out of the darkroom, she heard the thunder. then saw the lightning. At first she didnt think anything of it then suddenly it hit her. FIONA!

"OH NO!!"

Cassie ran to her frount door and grabbed her jacket as she ran out the door. She ran down her driveway. she slipped in the mud and slid into a tree. There was a thud as the thunder sounded again. She wiped the mud from her eyes and ran on again. Soon she was to the spot were she jumped the ditch to get to were Fiona had not moved from. The water rushed through the ditch, Cassie jumped the ditch slideing a little at the edge and almost fell into the ditch.

She caught herself then ran to the stone, tripping and slideing. She slide and ran into the stone with an

"Uff"

She scrammbled to her feet and looked around franticly, she called over the loud thunder and battering rain.

"FIONA! FIONA WERE ARE YOU!? FIONA! SANDY!"

she caught the faint sound of sniffleing during a momentary calm. She looked around a moment then movement caught her eye. She looked then dropped down. She looked under a part of the stone and saw Sandy, in the arms of a little girl.

"What on earth?"
