"Spread out!" Polly barked from where she was just past the waves. She had to kick her tail back and forth to keep from going under, but she didn't notice. The water was too deep for her to touch the ground below. She pointed at Austin who was to her right. "Go out a bit further! The map said it was right past the coral!"
They hadn't brought the map, of course, it was too heavy and the wind liked to tug at the sticky notes all over it, but they had memorized the location of the nearest note. It just happened to be there by the CPK party. Strange, but they weren't deep thinkers anyway. They never even noticed.

"I can't take you anywhere!" exclaimed Orli as they trooped down to the water. Fish looked a bit sheepish and licked his hand lamely. It tasted like cola. Orli slapped him. "Stop that," she said. "It's gross."
Fish stopped and walked the rest of the way down to the ocean with his hands in his pocket. "Looks like someone beat us here," he said.
"Yeah," said Orli, squinting to see if it was anyone she knew. It was. "POLLY!" she yelled, and ran the rest of the way, leaving poor Fish to wonder what had just happened.
When he finally caught up to her, he asked, "Want to introduce me to your friend?"
"No," said Orli, "You've got gross table manners and cooties. Polly, this is Fish. He's a grade below us at Liberty."

"Yeah, okay," Polly said, only glancing at them for a moment. "Further out you idiot!" she shouted at Austin. "And you can't find anything by going down for such short trips!"
"Why don't YOU do this part and I stand around shouting!" he bellowed back at her before diving under again.

Orli sighed and tapped her friend on the shoulder. "Helloooooooo," she said. "Best friend who you have not seen for several weeks. Twelve o clock."
Both of these new children struck Fish as a bit rude and loud, but they were friends of Orli's. That, he reasoned, meant they were at least some semblance of okay. He turned his attention to the boy out in the water, who seemed to be having trouble holding his breath. Fish could do better than that!
He looked back at Polly.
"What's he looking for?" he asked.
"Dunno," said Orli with a shrug. "He's Austin. I don't like him much."

Kaeden's head came up out of the water then, taking a gulp of air. His brown hair hung in his face and he had to shake his head to get it and some water out of his eyes. "Nothin on this one!" he called back to Polly, having either missed or ignored the shouting match that had been going on between Austin and Polly.
Most likely he missed it, being under water. He glanced at the two others that had joined Polly, not knowing or remembering them.

"Damn," Polly muttered. "Keep looking!" she told the skunk boy before turning to Orli finally. "We're hunting treasure," she said with a huge, slightly wicked grin. "There's supposed to be something right beyond the coral reefs, but Austin never learned to hold his breath, and I called Captain first."
In other words she could do it better, but she enjoyed bossing him around more. The water rolled, forming a wave behind them that rushed to the shore. Polly didn't even seem to notice.
Austin's eyes narrowed on Orli and he scowled for a moment before taking a few deep breaths and going under again. He would rather be under water than deal with that annoying harpy! One harpy was enough, if you asked him!

"I can breathe underwater!" volunteered Fish. "I'll go help!"
Without another word, he raced out into the water and swam towards Austin at a surprising speed. "What are we looking for?" he called.
Orli shrugged to her friend. "Boys," she said in disgust. "And here I was thinking Fish was kind of okay. Guess not."

(( I didn't know if I was allowed to join, but if I'm not feel free to delete my post! ))
"Are you sure this alright?" Sophia asked, tugging a bit at the rim of her sunhat. It was white to match her pale blue one-piece suit and the ribbon, which was currently tangled due to a slight breeze, was a nice lavender shade to match the suit's skirt. She shifted her feet a little, feeling the sand slip into her wood-mesh sandles. She still hadn't taken them off yet, even though Jamie had come to the beach completely bare foot. He knew how to keep things simple; just a pair of yellow swim trunks was all he needed. Sophie, on the other hand, worrier as she was, had even brought towels and a small basket for lunch. She knew it was supposed to be a "party" here, but...what if it ended up they weren't welcome after all? Or if there was no food?
She closed her eyes briefly, letting out a small sigh, "Sean's going to be so mad at me, going without him..."
"He can't come if he's sick," Jamie reassured her, "Besides, you made him some soup before you left right? He'll be snoozing the whole time, he'll never notice." He looked out across the beach eagerly. He had heard, somehow through the chatter of the cafe', that some other kids from their school would be here today. He had been excited to say the least; going to the beach with his sister was no fun, all she did was look for shells and feed the seagulls. He had even left RICEE behind easily, knowing there would be other kids here.
"Come on, I think I see some others down by the water!" He told her with a smile, immediately running off across the sand to see for himself.
"Alright I'll...I'll be right there!" Sophie called. She let out another sigh and made her way slowly across the shifting sand, looking for a nice spot to set everything down. If she put it close to the water it'd all get wet...

"We're looking for trea--"
"Junk!" Austin bellowed before Polly could spill the beans. "We're just looking for junk, so no reason to give us a hand or anything." If they happened to find it, then they would want a part of it, and Polly was too damn nice to the little shining girl as it was! Her pirate-ness would be compromised!
Polly just looked at him, then shrugged. "Yeah, junk," she told the other girl, catching sight of yet another kid heading towards them. "You don't gotta help or anything, we got it under control."

"Okay," said Orli, peering out to sea where Fish had passed the breakers and was paddling towards Austin. "But I think Fish is gonna help anyway."
She followed the phoenix girl's gaze and also saw another girl headed towards them. She waved.
"Howdy," she said, in a way that was probably funny in her head but just kind of odd out loud.
"Okay, okay, junk," said Fish, treading water beside Austin. "Can I still help? I can stay underwater longer than you can."
This much was pretty clearly and obviously true.
"What's the junk look like?" he asked the boy.

"Junk? Really?" Jamie looked quite interested instead of put off. He waded quickly into the water, rubbing his arms a little at the initial chill. "I usually get my junk at the dump...what kind of stuff can you find here? Are you building something?" Of course his busy little mind went right to that...what else did you use junk for? Personally he thought it was great. He'd often go with his sister or mother to the junk yard to collect discarded things...often they needed fixing up or something, but they could either be a base for something he wanted to make or a part...and one could never have too many parts! Scrap metal was especially useful simply because you just needed it for basic purposes.
Sophia found a place just before the sand got wet to put all of their things. Once everything was arranged she turned and went to the water's edge. She wasn't quite so eager to jump in...and junk was definately not enticing to her. And she had thought she and Jamie were going to go swimming together...but it was alright. She wasn't sure she wanted to go all the way into the water anyway.
"Ah, hello!" Sophia replied to Orli with a small smile, adusting her hat to see a little better, "Are...you going to go diving too...?"
