Shopping for the impending school year had never been difficult for Zachary, who was low-maintenance enough that he simply used most of his clothes from the year before, and some of his binders, if he could handle it. It wasn't that he was cheap: going through malls and weaving through the crowds of peers and younger children was just too much of a hassle for the youth, who had other, better things he could be doing. However, things were different when, all of a sudden, Zachary found himself going to a school with strict dress code requirements, none of them matching his previous wardrobe.
Holding a pair of pressed khaki shorts against his body, he sighed, shaking his head. At least Hillworth's lacrosse uniforms weren't as crappy as the rest of their choices in clothing. There, that was a positive, right? Maybe the food would be better, too, since they had no choice but to live there. Internally, he shrugged to himself, then looked back at the Hillworth backpack in his other hand as he shuffled into line behind whining kids in their parents, silently urging them forward.
He hoped they didn't take too long. After all, he had better things he could be doing.

'Please let him finish.' The mantra was chanted silently in Elzo's head. His younger brother had insisted they forgo the usual hour at the mall's cafe, girl watching, and rather, go shopping. For clothes. Maybe all that girl watching was rubbing off on him in a bad way. But, still they had to do it sometime. So far, they had been to over 3 stores, each one either didn't have what Marlo said were the 'dress code or regulation wear', OR, Marlo just got pissed off at the poor sales clerks and Elzo had to end up dragging them out before his brother started giving out death glares to kids. The fourth store so far was filled will other possible students, (some cute girls included), and Marlo had yet to glare angry at price tags or staff members. So far so good. Now, if only Elzo could convince his brother to hurry up. It's not like it mattered if they had one seam out of place, geez! In contrast however, Marlo was utterly pleased with the latest store. The kids were quite, the clothes fit the school's required code...very good. "Yes." Elzo almost jumped when Marlo final said something not negative. The simple yes was the answer to Elzo's mantra, Marlo was done shopping. Finally. Yes meant, 'I'm done. Let's go.' Oh thanks what ever Gods were looking down upon him; Elzo was already heading to the register... And Elzo groaned as he saw his brother slowly walk toward him and the line. Marlo's eyes immediately went to a nearby worker, idly chatting while a register was left unattended. 'Marlo..." Elzo sighed heavily. Elzo tapped the shoulder on the man in front of them. "Can we skip a head of you or soemthing, we're kind of in a rush." Okay....a little lie but honestly, Elzo wanted some girl watching later. Not more shopping and waiting.

At first, Zachary wasn't even aware of the fact that someone else was addressing him: he was off in his own little world, isolated from the other store sounds, and he had no need to listen up for conversation. However, as the voice behind him continued, the teen glanced back, only to realize that the talk was in fact directed towards him.
"I think most of us are in a rush," Zachary said with a somewhat dead tone. "Otherwise, we'd be loitering around in the store as opposed to waiting in line." Other than his comment and the critical stare he gave the other boy from under his glasses, Zachary made no indication, in the slightest, that he was going to move.

Elzo sighed at the man's response. Well, it was worth a shot. Patting Marlo on the back, the taller brother tried to force a smile. "Looks like we're stuck Ma-" What Elzo had failed to notice, was that his brother was already walking towards the chatting workers. And at the sight of it, Elzo's forced smile became a genuine frown. "You know...just once I wish you would just go with the flow bro." Elzo said to no one in particular, (but it was quite obvious who it was about). Turning back to the man from before, Elzo offered a hand. "Sorry 'bout that. I'm Elzo. Elzo Xanis. And that guy," he pointed to his brother, who seemed to be verbally berating the workers, "is my brother Marlo. You going to Hillworth too?" He nodded at the abundance of khaki clothes in hand.

Zachary blinked, somewhat surprised at the calm reaction of the other boy, but ultimately shrugged, pegging the conversation as 'over' in his mind. Sure, he could hear the guy mumbling something behind him, but it didn't seem all that pertinent, and his mind began to wander to other matters, fumbling through his pocket to find a sheet of paper, the book list for Hillworth scrawled in chickenscratch handwriting. It was when Zachary began to peruse the contents of the list that he was addressed again.
His eyes lifted, though they lacked the harsh glint in them from before, simply curious as to this other boy, a peer, apparently. "Yeah, I'm a transfer from Meadowview," he said with a reserved tone. "My name's Zachary." He thought that, perhaps, he should try to make some conversation to avoid the topic of just why he was transferring.
"What year are you?"

"Cool. Me and Marlo got transfered by our parents. I guess they kind of got sick of us getting kicked out the regular boarding schools, so, they must have figured that a militaristic school might make us fight less." He shrugged "I'm going to be a junior, and Marlo's a sophomore. As for what classes we might take...I think He's going to take some extra history classes. I'm going to take art and music classes. If I want to study something, I'm going to do it with out being graded on it. You know?" Elzo, grinned, as if answering a question that was never asked, plus, running his mouth in general, was a good thing.
Meanwhile, Marlo had insulted, (and who knew what else), the non-working staff for quite a while. As a result, one worker, a meak looking girl, went and opened a second register. Yet, Marlo still remained by the other workers, glaring daggers.

Zachary nodded once, shuffling the pants strewn over his arm to a more comfortable position. "I'll be a senior...don't really have a concentration or anything like that." Lacrosse didn't count as a concentration, did it? He hadn't really thought beyond that. Inwardly, he shrugged. "I like math, when it's not boring."
He peered curiously at the other brother--Marlo, he thought to himself--getting some progress done with the lines. Although he was relieved to see the line shuffle into a slow crawl, he didn't like the look on the one cashier's face as she opened a register. Maybe she'd deserved the angry customer, but stuff like that was a sore spot for the boy. He could only imagine his sister doing the same thing.
Idly, he wondered what she was up to about now.
"...Looks like your brother's got it all under wraps," commented Zachary, who still floundered about in the attempt to make conversation. After all, it might be wise to find allies when going to a school like Hillworth.

"So you're a mathlete then? You don't look like some pansy a** nerd." Eyeing his up and down, Elzo rubbed his chin. "Nah, you've got to do a sport." He smiled. "I don't do much sports. I kinda tend to get into fights alot so..It's better that way, besides, It's not like we're going to get any cute cheerleaders anyway." He sighed, thinking about the cute Crystal Academy girls. "...You think if you played a sport, you'd get to play against some of those cute Crystal girls?" Elzo had a one track mind indeed.
Huffing, Marlo gave up on the remaining working. Oh, but he'd be sending a letter, that was for sure! Stomping, or rather, storming, (who could really tell at this point?) back to his brother, The younger boy shoved his clothing choices right into Elzo's gut, winding him. "God, Marlo, don't get your panties in a twist!" Marlo glared at Elzo, who merely grinned in response. "Oh hey, This is Zachary. He's going to Hillworth too." Elzo tried to get his brother to stop being well...him. Yet Marlo's faced reminded a bit...aggressive as he reached out a hand. "Marlo Xanis. I hope my brother hasn't been of too much of an a**." "HEY!"

Somehow, it amused Zachary that he would get confused for a mathlete, and he grinned despite himself, shaking his head with a slight chuckle. "Nah, I'm not good enough to compete, I'm just better at it than history or science. I actually played lacrosse with Meadowview last year." He paused, his expression turning grim underneath the lenses under his glasses. He still hadn't decided if he was going to try for the team here, just to have to play his own former teammates. It was another sore subject of his. "Crystal girls aren't worth it, trust me," he replied lowly, his brow furrowing.
He gladly pushed the thoughts from his mind as he saw the other boy approach, though he did stare at the open hand for a moment before he thought to accept the greeting, giving Marlo a firm shake as he nodded. "Thanks for getting the line moving again," he said, ignoring the underlying argument. He had siblings, he knew how those could be.

"Lacrosse? Isn't it like...the game where you can beat up the rival players?" Elzo smirked. "I bet Hillworth is pretty thought then. You going to join? I bet you didn't get into Hillworth on your looks!" he nudged Zachary's arm playfully, missing the grim look. "And those Crystal girls...Come on...With how cute they are...defiantly worth it." Elzo sighed and closed his eyes.
Very few of the crystal girls are worth it. Most are just plain cold hearted demons." Marlo's reply seemed a bit bored, but not with out a bit of disdain. "But to say they are all a hopeless attempt...I think that it would be exaggerating. Just saying all of Hillworth boys are unscrupulous individuals. And if you look at our outfits.." he held up the plain pants and sighed. "I doubt we'll be showing much individuality." Elzo had just about missed everything his brother had said, rather, he was staring at him mouth agape. "Jesus Zach, you must be like...magic or something! Marlo never talks this much!" He pulled his brother into a headlock which the other boy immediately tried to get out of.

"No, lacrosse is the one with sticks that stupid people call Quidditch," Zachary replied with a deadpan tone. "Rugby's the one where it's preferred that you beat up the rival players." The boy did not seem amused by the lack of sports knowledge in his classmate, and at some point in the future, he would have to sit him down in a more formal environment and spell it out for them.
He watched Marlo's response with a bit of interest, but the implications failed to register anything except for a shared disdain, and so Zachary nodded, shuffling forward in the line as he could. "It's nothing, really...I think it's just a matter of the situation and everything." He motioned towards the check-out line, which looked like it'd gotten considerably smaller. "It helps pass the time, I guess."

"OH MY GOD YOU PLAY QUIDDITCH?" Elzo yelled, causing Marlo to very visibly flinch, still locked in his brother's hold. "Marlo, this guy plays muggle quidditch!" He shook his brother's shoulder. "...You really don't get sarcasm do you?" Marlo sighed as he final slipped out from Elzo's grasp. "Huh?" Marlo sighed again, a bit heavier then normal. "You'll have to forgive him. He means well...but he's really just a bubbling idiot. "
Elzo pouted at his brother's remark. "I'm not an idiot, Mr. I-can-ace-this-test-but-oops-I-kind-of-suck-at." Marlo shot Elzo a death glare. "Elli, shut up." The brothers seemed for a while to forget about their companion. That is until Elzo looked back at Zachary with determined eyes. "It's like muggle quidditch right?" Marlo rolled his eyes at his brother's question and gave Zachary and 'Sorry' shrug before turning and looking at the meek cashier he had...harassed from before.

Zachary did his best to avoid twitching at the outburst, but his expression nevertheless tightened into a poorly-concealed scowl, pushing his glasses back up the bridge of his nose as if that would help him regain some of his composure. Eventually, he supposed that it wasn't Elzo's fault if he didn't know about the sport, and that he would have to utilize patience if he was going to get anywhere with these two.
"I...guess if you want to think of it that way, then you're welcome to," said the boy with a shrug. "I'll be bringing my extra sticks to Hillworth, so if you want to learn how to play, I can show you. It'll be something to do, you know?" Something inside him told him that allowing Elzo to use his equipment would only lead to broken equipment, but he was still trying to be nice, if nothing else. His glance shifted over to Marlo, with whom he already felt slightly more at ease. "If we had a few more people, we could start up an intermural game or something." Such was Zachary's way of saying that he didn't really want to be a part of the official team, but he still wanted to play.

Elzo's eyes lit up. "You'd teach me to play? Seriously? I've never really played alot of sports..So I'm not sure if I'd be a big help." He rubbed the back of his head, as if embarrassed. "And, um...oh geez I forgot what I was going to ask." Elzo began to tap his chin while Marlo looked on, a bit amused at his brother's actions. "An intermural game or team? It'd be a bit difficult to get players to go against. But, if you started it after the season ended, I would bet that others would be willing to join." Picking at a bit of lint from the sweater vest he was going to buy, Marlo kept speaking. "Personally, I'd be more comfortable playing with the school, given that you don't have to own all the equipment or worry about getting a coach. Plus, I doubts fights would break out as often." He sighed, giving up on the lint. "I really dislike sweater vests."

Zachary had humored the common reference to fights for the duration of the conversation thusfar, but at some point he'd become curious. "Do people really fight that much at Hillworth?" he asked to Marlo, his mouth twitching downwards into a pout. "I didn't know there was that much to be fighting over."
He shuffled forward in line, thinking carefully about the whole situation. Was it a school-wide activity? Did people expect all of their classmates to be so combative? Zachary didn't think himself the type to use force...that is, unless there was a lacrosse stick in his hand. Still, beating someone with his equipment would seem somewhat of a waste, and all in all he didn't see the point.
He really wasn't going to fit in, was he?
