Here we can discuss upcoming musicals. There are four musical movies that I know of coming within the next two years or so.
Sweeney Todd Rent The Producers Pippin Hairspray Bombay Dreams Dreamgirls
This is a thread where we can discuss the pros and cons of these musicals being turned into movies. And if we think the right directors are hired, shall be hired. Who we hope is cast if it is not cast yet, for instance Sweeney Todd and Pippin. And, well, just discuss.

The Cons for all of these is that there is the lack of the theratical experience. I simply adore the experience so I personally think it is a shame that these musicals are becoming a movie. But It's wonderful because then I can spend twenty to thirty dollars for it and watch it dozons of times, rather than paying a hundread for one viewing...

Con for movie musicals these days-the lip synching is usually HORRIBLE! I mean, I loved Phantom of the Opera, but there were a lot of times when you could tell the dubbing was off and it was so distracting! (You don't hit high notes like that with your mouth barely open!) *Rant rant rant*
I just don't understand that with all our technology today, why Julie Andrews looked like she was actually singing in Sound of Music but the Phantom people don't. So, yes, major con that they need to work on.
Pros-people like me who can't afford to go to New York and see shows can FINALLY see them. (Really looking forward to Rent)
Also, Hairspray I think can be added. That's in the planning stages right now for a 2006 release.

Bombay Dreams is also in planning from what I understand.
-----------------------------------
Cons- For the purpose if time and such, the original HEART of theatre is at risk to get lost in transaltion. Also, through interpritation! I mean seriously, they are adding GAY MARRIAGE to the plot line of the Rent movie. That is just ruining John Larson's original vision. It was not an issue when he was writting the music, so it never should have found it's way into the movie.
Pros- It is nice to be able to watch some of our favorite shows whenever we want... legally.

Isn't there already a movie of The Producers?
Anyway...I don't watch very many movie musicals...I never rent movies or buy them...so...yeah.
My friend bought the DVD of Bye Bye Birdie for an audition...and he told me that there were people talking on the phone who were in the same room...and the room happened to be a shower that was on at the time....but yet, no one was electrecuted?
So yeah, they have more freedom when it comes to staging and props and stuff...but they don't always use it well... sweatdrop

I'm actually all for stage musicals being turned into movies because, as aforementioned, not everyone has the opportunity to see them on stage. For instance, I've never seen the stage version of Phantom of the Opera so I thought the movie was absolutely fantastic. So for me, I'm really excited that there are so many stage musicals being made into movies because that means I get to see them. However, if I was able to compare the stage musical to the movie, I doubt I would be as enthused.

PossessedByDevil How does everyone feel about Sam Mendes directing Sweeney Todd? ooooh. that's potentially cool...except if sam mendes has no film experience (and i'm being dumb and i don't know if he does...watch, someone will point out that he does), then i worry. bombay dreams could really be awesome on film, what with the whole bollywood thing. i see that selling really well, to tell you the truth. rent...ugh...they're gonna so screw that up. pippin is a great show, but i really hope they consider modernizing it. i saw it when papermill playhouse in new jersey made pippin about the players of today and it was all in a club with rock and rave overtones. it was damn cool. in general, i look down on adaptations because they're not alive, period. singing and dancing at random might be an accepted convention on stage, but that's not true for film at all, yet (well, besides indian movies). so if they can make it quasi-feasible like they did for cabaret and chicago, fine by me.

I think musicals are just not meant to be converted to the screen...stuff that works on stage just doesn't fly in movies. The overdramatization of the stage becomes...well, corny on film. This is what brought Phantom down at parts: the dramatic outbursts of song didn't have nearly the same effect as in a theater. Chicago was an exception because they mixed, filming all of the big numbers as performances. *shrug* I really don't see how they're going to do Rent...
