We recently switched a mare that I'm working with from a Cavesson noseband to a dropped noseband and it got me thinking, what is it that makes certain types of nosebands more effective on different horses? I've added or subtracted a flash before to help with submission problems, but beyond that, I don't know what would make you decide on a different type of noseband. What makes you realize that you need a figure eight, rather than the more popular cavesson and flash? What would make you decide to try a drop? Monterae is a lot happier in the drop than she was in the cavesson, and we've been making a lot of progress since the switch, so something about it is more comfortable for her.

I've mostly just used plain cavessons on the horses I've ridden, most are content with that and don't throw any hissy fits that could be helped by another sort. We did use a Figure 8 on a mare at one of the barns I used to work at, the best I could tell they just used that so she wouldn't gape but even that is a rough guess.
I try to keep tack as simple and as close to the basics as possible. It's easier for me, and for the owners. It also creates a cleaner image for the hunter ring.

The plain cavesson does dominate in the hunter ring, but you seem to see a lot more figure eights and flashes in the jumper ring, along with some of the craziest bits you'll ever see, lol.
The cavesson with a flash is definitely dominant in lower level dressage, at least in the USA, I think drops are a little more common in Europe, but I don't know for sure. Once you put on the double bridle though, you have to use a plain cavesson.

I use a cavesson and flash. Mostly I like to use a plain cavesson if I can unless the horse needs something else but my bridle has an attached flash so I just make it really loose and when my horse tries to evade my contact my opening his mouth, he can't.
Figure eights are being used more and more by lower level jumpers mainly because as far as I can tell, these people are having a hard time controlling their horses. Drops are very popular in low level dressage in Europe.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Please do not crank!!!! I mean, I own a crank. It's on my show bridle. But I don't like using it. Too often, people over-crank. They tighten flashes and cranks too much and this locks their horse's jaw and allows no room for submission, then people ride their horse for hours because they're trying to get their horse to give in.....

haha, I agree. I hate to see nosebands (or anything really) over-tightened. People are looking to keep their horse from opening their mouth and actually create tension by making it uncomfortable.
However, I do like crank nosebands, I just don't tighten them all the way. I Keep them snug but comfortable, the same tightness I would have with a cavesson. I like them, though, because they are more padded and they distribute the pressure a little more evenly, I think. But they are very easy to abuse, I will agree.
It is kind of funny that people will over-crank in an attempt to force submission, and will take a knock in the submission score because of it. Just a misunderstanding of biomechanics, I think, and what result you're looking for with the closed mouth is.

I ride Elegant in a regular cavesson, no need for anything else.
Anna I rode in a crank because the previous owner loaned it to me, and it fit her, was a really nice bridle, etc. But I always used the second last hole, because that was at a regular tightness. The same tightness that I'd adjust a cavesson to. I actually liked the crank better than my hunter bridle because it was padded all the way around.

If I have to use an alternate noseband it is usually dropped. It's quick to add and I know that it will fit over the smallest Arab (teacup) muzzles. (In the training pen.)

I use a figure 8 on my App b/c he gets really bored and starts this fake yawning crap, then flips his tongue over the bit repeatedly.
