One could've said a wild cat was on a midnight hunt; Verdant eyes, lit by what slivers of the moon's glow passed the thick overhang of trees, moved swiftly through the dim forest. But these emeralds belonged to a prestigious bandit - at least in her own mind.

Charlotte was on a hunt of her own, though. A hunt for what? The answer to that would be clear when Charlie found it, wouldn't it? But, honestly. All the good stuff was situated in creepy forests like such. And whatever this treasure was, the mare knew it would be something extravagant. Something to make mother proud and her sister envious beyond belief.

Some foreign wind that holed its way into the shadowy woods shifted her tousled mane and her ears perked in alert. It might've been a bit stupid to assume this journey wouldn't come with challenges. Charlotte, of course, made no such assumption, and so a grin lifted the corners of her mouth. This is where the real adventure began.

Paradox was most at home at night. Shrouded in darkness so thick it obscured even his ivory pelt, his piercing gaze cut through the night. He was built like a predator, slinking through his forest with a catlike grace. He had ruled this forest for almost a year, and had bested every threat in it's dark depths. He had settled in a place so creepy and unsettling to make a point. He was a monster, so said his father, and as such, a monster should have a monster's lair.

This was his lair. And he prowled about it with a silent scowl on his face, hunting down prey to feed his constantly rising bloodlust. His father's gift to him, this insaitable lust. Mixed with a touch of his mother's insanity, it made him just dangerous enough that most Soquili stayed away. Those that had sense, at least. Now and again he found those who stayed...who unwittingly became pawns in his manipulative mind games.

He sniffed the breeze, searching for the scent of life. He had been hoping for a deer, or at the very least, a rabbit, but the wind brought him a different smell...a mare.

He would not take blood from another Soquili. But...she could be fun to play with. It had been so long since he'd had a mind to manipulate...

A wicked, toothy grin spreading on his face, he turned and crept towards his mental prey.

Quiet, now. Lift your hooves just right. Keep your eyes and ears alert. Charlotte read off instructions as if from a book in a voice much like a drill instructor's. There now, was that a flash of white? A sliver of mane? Was it really? How curious. Now, what kind of creature would dwell in such a place?

Kalona.

How splendid! Charlie never chanced direct contact with such a Soquili. Yet now the opportunity knocked and she was ready to take it head on. Of course it could've been some other species that stumbled into the forest and got lost. But the chances of that were slim when brought against those of a creature of the night. Skinwalker? Impossible. Charlotte could've sworn the faintest sound of the wind sifting through leather wings.

Right then, she wasn't afraid of this thing. And she would just have to make that clear.

"Hello." She spoke in a strong voice and didn't question another's presence as someone of fickle courage would.

She had some skill, it appeared. She had sensed his approach, a daunting task in such a dark forest even though his coat was pale as moonlight. This one had either an overabundance of natural ability or training. Paradox's smile widened. This one would be fun.

"You are unafraid, though an unknown being approaches in the darkness. You are brave. Pity that won't be enough. For you see, you've wandered into my territory...and I cannot just let you go. That wouldn't be fun, now would it?" His voice sultry and smooth, he practically purred as he started to circle his "visitor."

"I can't imagine what you're doing here. This is no place for travelers to casually wander...so you are no ordinary traveler, am I correct? You must have some reason for wandering so far into such a spooky forest...and you will tell me what that reason is."

Paradox was almost pleased that she had wandered into his lands. She might be a fitting match...she certainly had the spunk for it. He flashed her a toothy grin, showing off his small, hidden fangs, no less deadly for their petite size. No...he wouldn't hurt her.

But she didn't have to know that.

Oh, yes. There it was. Her answer. She wasn't at all surprised to find that the voice was masculine and dripping a somewhat sadistic smugness that dark creatures usually bore. Let her go? Hah! Did he really expect her to shy away at the sight of his figure? His leathery wings that were, indeed, there?

"Hah! You're pretty damn cocky, thinking I vill run from you."

Her mind divided tasks among its parts: half thought and spoke while the other searched him with the help of her eyes. He was certainly a Kalona. Well, partially, that was. Though it was hard to see them in this dim light, matching his hair were those little headwings Angeni were said to have. Sure, his eyes had no whites where they should've been, but in the centre were opal-esque orbs that told her his genes were semi-pure. There was an obvious Unicorn horn protruding from his forehead and everything but his wings and teeth screamed Angeni.

That aside, her other part of the brain was working away as well. Was she a traveler? Did she look a petty wanderer, going wherever? Of course not. He knew it, too. "I do not have to tell you anything, sir. Do I really appear that stupid?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 27, 2009 4:53 pm

"And you, my dear child, would be very unwise to linger in a Kalona's lands....or did you not learn that in school?" He answered, a glittering, mischievous look in his neon eyes. "Unfortunately, I'm not the most civil of beasts....and I haven't eaten yet tonight." His grin became all the more pronounced for his teasing, giving him more the appearance of the Cheshire cat than of a Kalona.

He noticed her eyes, neon green, scanning his obviously Angeni features. A scowl flashed across his face, only momentarily, before the grin reasserted itself on his face. "Looks can be deceiving," he hissed softly, before turning his thoughts to another matter. She clearly was not an ordinary traveler. She was not lost, she was not here by accident. So, what was she doing in this forgotten corner of the forest? What could possibly bring her here?

"And as far as your intelligence....I was not remarking upon it. You must certainly be very bright to make it this far into my wood. However....I think I'm within rights to ask what a certain wayward mare is doing within my territory, don't you? After all, you would want to know why someone was at your doorstep. It's a matter of courtesy."

He stretched out his wings, the joints cracking softly as he extended the cramped muscles. "I don't think you're here for the obvious charms of the place," he said, deftly brushing a clump of moldy moss out of a tree with a wingtip. "If you're not lost, which I'm assuming you're not, then you're looking for something....whatever that may be, you probably won't find it here, although if you were looking for trouble, you will find it in abundance."

He folded his wings back, shuffling them into place, a wry smile tugging on his lips. Yes, she would find a good deal of trouble if she lingered here. It was true that he hadn't eaten, hadn't sated his aching bloodlust, and it, coupled with the insanity that slipped into his mind, could possibly endanger the mare if she stayed long enough to provoke him.

That scowl. The smallest fidget of the corners of his mouth and she had him. Eyes smoldering; liquid emerald. She watched his next speech fragments carefully, trying to see through them. Alas, she had no such luck. The stallion wouldn't be making the mistake of letting loose a single flicker of emotion again, it would seem. 'Vell, he's not stupid..' Good. He wasn't another "fangs 'n claws" creature. "'Charms' is a vord defined by the individual, sir. For all you know I could love the 'dramatic' upkeep ov your 'abode'." Her eyes rolled and she gave him a challenging smirk, "yet you guessed correctly. I am here for something very valuable." Value. Another word of many meanings. It was better that way. He need not know her objective for he supplied her with a treasure above all others - to Charlotte, at least. Would he knowingly give her the pleasure of a challenge? Charlie laughed internally, 'I vouldn't give him a chance!' Even if she were to die she'd depart with a stolen treasure. And that knowledge would be enough to rest her soul.

"Then I question your taste. And I doubt you find this place the least bit appealing. OUt of everything my forest lacks, decorum is first on the list." Paradox smirked, a sense of concern beginning to form in the back of his mind. The last thing he wanted to do was harm such an interesting mare...yet he could feel the beginnings of raw hugner forming, and that was dangerous for anyone nearby. "What could possibly be of value in my forest? I know it like I know my own hooves. There is nothing valuable here...the only thing here, in fact, is a certain Kalona, which if you were searching for, you have indeed already found. So, there really is no reason for you to remain in my lands, other than to keep me company," he chuckle darkly, "But you will find that I am not always as pleasant as I am now." As if to emphasize his point, a faint pink ring formed around his blue irises, the first signal of bloodlust or insanity. "It is a pity someone so intriguing as you may find themselves in danger on my account." Paradox knew it was only a matter of time before he lost control. Once he reached a certain point, he would attack her, not because he wanted to, but because he wouldn't have a choice. His bloodlust would demant it. "Since there is no treasure to be found here...perhaps you should go."

Observant as she was, Charlotte saw the pink that contrasted his black eye creep in. And suddenly the stallion was talking of her leave far more than necessary, eagerly encouraging it, even. A single eyebrow propped up over the Bandit's left eye. Did he really think he'd get off easy? A silent moment later the other one followed when she realized he wasn't simply an irritable being. He was an irritable Kalona. With fangs. With needs. But was that enough to stop "the great Charlotte"? Hah! The very thought sent her chuckling out loud. "But sir, you vould not know the least about this treasure vich I seek in your home." He could've concerned her for a bit, she'd give him that, but he wouldn't steer her off of whatever he hid, even if all he was hiding was his hunger for her flesh and blood. If he attacked her, she would've claimed another treasure: his submission. His pleading to her leave showed that he, indeed, did not wish to hurt her. Did not wish to be a demon. Because of this fact Charlie knew that it'd haunt him for the rest of his life, and with that would come remembrance of her self, something would make her immortal, at least for a little while. "Perhaps I should stay." Her eyes were again eager for information. A simple stutter would give her all she needed.

Paradox saw her raised eyebrow. She didn't understand his hints, his veiled threats. No...she was more intelligent than that. She would soon realize what he was hinting at, and though he had Angeni blood, his dominant traits definitely came from his Kalona heritage...surely she would understand. Anyone with even an ounce of Kalona blood was susceptible. "I wouldn't know? I, who live here? You, who I have never seen before would know of something I am unaware of despite the fact that I have been here for months? Perhaps it is not a physical treasure you seek. Perhaps the treasure you seek doesn't even exist." Paradox took in a slightly shuddering breath. Every time he breathed, he breathed in her scent...which in turn sent more waves of bloodlust, threatening to break through his fragile control. He wondered if she had a deathwish, this mare who raised an eyebrow over his now red-tinted irises, fearless of the possibility of injury or death. "Like I said...your treasure may not even be here. There really is no reason for you to feel pressured to stay in such a gloomy place as my forest." Paradox could feel his small, hidden fangs start to ache. This mare really was pushing it...and he would never forgive himself if he harmed her. But their meeting had turned into something of a challenge, one Paradox could not ignore.

"Albeit it might not be fisical it is, indeed, a treasure. Perhaps you should learn the value of things." She trotted off to the side, appearing substantially interested in a certain tree bough. "I know vhat you are... Your bloodlust projects through your eyes and your angelic counterparts cannot hold back the inevitable..." Charlotte turned about, looking him straight in the eye, "and that would be that you, sir, are a Kalona. And let me ask if I may, does it not shame you to bear a healing horn when it cannot make up for your killings?" Her eyes narrowed. This was a tricky and dangerous game, provoking what he was. But a halt struck her and her train of thought hopped a bridge, flooded suddenly with a very definite memory. Her father is a Unicorn. Her sister is a Unicorn. And she looked at this stallion of parts who, though he bore that horn was less of a Unicorn than Charlotte, deprived of said trait, ever would be. With that she let slip her emotions and they tangled: sorrow for the definite misery of this creature before her, subconscious or miniscule as it must be with smugness of the fact that, though Charlotte never wanted to be "pure", she was more so than the stallion that so obviously longed to be. Her lips pursed and her eyes undilated as she retreated to observation once more. She could've possibly set off a ticking time bomb. Only time would tell.

"You couldn't possibly even begin to understand what I am." Paradox said, his voice strained. "I don't have to answer to you!" Paradox, fighting his own demons, was still sane enough to notice the play of emotions across her face. He saw she understood some of what it might be to bear the crossover of Angeni, Unicorn, and Kalona blood. "How could you know anything about me? You, who for your cleverness and bounty-hunting...you who live in darkness...you know nothing about what true darkness is." Paradox shuddered violently, barely keeping control. "It appears...I will have to lose this challenge. Follow if you will, I cannot stop you." With that, Paradox turned, tearing through the underbrush, fleeing from her to save her, allowing the bloodlust to take over only when he could no longer sense her. A predator to the core, he turned towards a familiar hunting trail of his, a well-used deer trail, following the enticing smell of a doe to her hiding place in a clearing. From that point, it was a simple strike to the jugular, crimson spilling out onto the dusty forest floor. He discarded the remains with a jerk of his head, wiping his nose on his shoulder, staining it red. Falling to his knees,he shivered, this time with fear, realizing how close the mare had been to taking the doe's place.

Charlotte watched the scene from a nearby thicket. It took her a bit to catch up, seeing as Paradox was driven by his thirst, but she did it! 'And Rayne says tracking skills are useless.' It wasn't fear nor loathing that took shape on her expression; it was fascination. Seeing one animal tear up another was nothing compared to the internal wounds her father left on her mother. The darkest grip of death encompassing the doe was nothing compared to her mother's spirit dying, making her a walking corpse. A dead thing could not haunt the mind of a child so much as a lingering zombie. The strangest thing happened then, forcing Charlie stumbling back a good number of steps to conceal herself further. The oh-so-strong and mighty stallion collapsed into a trembling mess. Charlotte's eyebrows scrunched together and her expression was undecided. She was a bit let down... So he wasn't a sadistic b*****d, after all. So he had emotions that made him a wimp in Charlotte's mind, right when the dark mare was developing a sense of respect for him. But she did have enough respect to keep back, stay hidden and pretend she couldn't see him weak.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 03, 2009 5:57 pm

Paradox snapped to attention as he detected the presence of the mare. He never forgot a scent. "I knew you would follow. You can't leave anything alone...driven by morbid curiosity." He picked himself up, blood still smeared on his white pelt, a crimson mark of the violence that just occurred. "You do not run from me as others would." He peered at her with cold blue eyes. "You realize you did a foolish thing earlier...you're lucky I didn't hurt you." Paradox thought she was insane, a different type than he, but insane nonetheless. He wondered why someone would intentionally provoke violence...why she would stay and face the blood on his snout, the gleam of his teeth...why none of the things that carried others out of his forest as fast as they could go didn't seem to faze her. "Why do you stay, when you know it could have been your neck I snapped instead of the doe's? When you know I could snap your neck now if I wanted?" Paradox frowned at her. He couldn't understand her in the least.

"Vell, for one, I'm fearless. Unlike you. I have also seen vorse things than blood and gore, don't think you are 'badass'." Charlotte's eyes rolled again as she unveiled herself from the thicket, stepping forth. She would have to remember that this one wasn't mentally deprived like others she'd met. Wasn't sensually deprived, either. Where she had a tracker's eyes and thoughts, the mutant had it all naturally programmed. And there, covered in the blood of a doe, she saw how ideal he was. His build was malevolent and freakish yet the perfect combination of genes; The hunting instinct and flight of a Kalona. Possibly the slightest fight of a healer in his horn. Perhaps the wisdom was from his Angeni part. Patched together into a neat package. Who wouldn't want that? 'Not me.' She wouldn't dare consider wanting a treasure that was totally impossible to obtain. She didn't need a dream fit for a child's mentality swaying her path. "Snap my neck if you vant," she stretched her neck out, tilting her head to the side, offering clean path to her jugular, then chuckled, "if you do it's on you."
