Nan had never been grocery shopping in her life.
She'd never had a reason to go. Her staff was very capable and more than adept at working within the generous budget they were allowed, and her home never seemed to run short on any manner of food. As a child, she'd been able to slip down to the kitchens at any hour of the night and find something worth eating, if not one of the night staff themselves, preparing things for the morning and making certain the facilities remained clean. As she'd grown older she'd learned to appreciate that more, but still hadn't really ever thought how daunting it would be to actually find herself in a supermarket.
They were huge.
Loosely holding Dasdeva's hand, her eyes a little blurred as she gazed around the seemingly endless aisles, Nan wondered where to start. The tiny shopping cart she had in front of her seemed impossibly small compared to all of the options, and she wondered how anyone managed to get any decent amount of shopping done with only one of them.
Well, there was only one way to find out.
Glancing down at Dasdeva, smiling at the sight of him, serious faced and obedient, she asked, "Ready to go?"
Turning, his one red eye settling on her face, he nodded. "Mhm."
This had been her idea, mostly inspired by the man and the child they'd met in the park prior. He'd taken Chase around and allowed him to decide where they ate - while Nan wasn't exactly ready to get into the habit of going out, she thought that if she took Dasdeva shopping, he could help her pick out things that he wanted to eat aside from peanut butter and jelly. Then, she could have the cooks start making those.
And maybe she could learn how to make a few too, so they could do something together. Share a meal that she'd cooked just for them.
Expression brightening at the thought, she went to set her purse in the seat provided, when she realized that it was for a child. Looking at him curiously, she asked, "Would you like to ride in the cart, Dasdeva?"
His attention was caught, and he studied the cart a moment, apparently deep in thought. Then, he nodded, a small smile curving his mouth. "Looks like fun."
A smile bloomed on her own face and she bent, tucking her hands under his armpits to lift him over and into the cart. It didn't take long to get him situated, and he looked pleased, if only because he had a better vantage point from high up.
"Would you like to hold my purse, Das?" She offered it, already deciding to set it in the cart itself if he didn't want to.
"Chase."
"Pardon?" Eyes widening, she blinked a couple of times. When she saw that he was looking over her shoulder, she swiveled, shoulders and torso following his line of sight while her hands still gripped the handle of the cart.
Oh, Chase. And his guardian, Mr. Williams!
Smiling a bit shyly, she shifted their cart so that she could face them more easily, and pushed it in their direction. "Good afternoon, Mr. Williams, Chase."
Turning so that he could better see, Dasdeva also piped up, "Mornin'. We're goin' shoppin' for food I like to eat."
