Ok I'm going to be a 2year soon and I'm becoming my directors assistant. I'm not an officer or leader YET. yea As soon as the cornel leaves I take their place. Any advice on people hating you just for doing what you do. I do a lot to help around my band not that I want praise, But just last year I organized our music library and during the summer help cleaned it I mean me clean. Take a look at my room. sweatdrop So I do all this and people hate me their spreading rumors around and I just want some advice on this topic? Please smile

Just ignore them.

There's always going to be people jealous of your position, no matter what it is or where you are.
There was a guy in my section last year that tried to overthrow me as section leader just because he wanted to see what we talk about in section leader meetings.
Seriously.
Worst season of my life because this guy's an idiot. :l

...I digress.

If they ask or it gets too annoying, tell them you're doing it for the better of the program, not for the position. 'Cause it sounds like you are. c:

I was the Drum Major in my school's marching band before i graduated.
it's best to just try and treat everyone with respect. (you seem like someone who does anyway, so just keep at it)

if people give you a hard time, just go strait to the person who started it, and speak seriously to them on the subject.
it's hard, but it usual works (for me anyway)
sometimes, they may have a real reason for being angry, and take it out on you, even if it's not your fault, because they feel the need to blame someone.

For example:
one year, our band marched a Chicago field show. Everyone wanted to play Rent or Phantom of the Opera, but the Director felt it best to do the other one. someone decided that it was me that choose the show, and were rather rude about it. They told everyone that i ignored what they wanted, and just picked the show i wanted to do (which, by the way, i wanted to play Sweeney Todd. lol)

i figured out who it was that started that all and talked to them about it. i explained that the other shows were not good for our band, and that the show was picked carefully with everyone's best interest in mind.

i don't know if that little anecdote will help, but i hope it does.....

Ok so you say I should just talk to them( that's going to be fun), I think I can muster up some courage to speak to them. Thanks for the advice this should help.

Don't get all emotional, that doesn't help. LT. Riza-Hawkeye is right, just treat them with the respect you deserve. Don't get mad at them, In large groups, there will always be people talking smack about leaders.

What drama. I'll prey for you. I might be facing the same thing soon, so you're not alone. I might end up plying first part this marching season. I'll be a Sophomer with Juniors sitting behind me. I guess we'll just have to see how it all works out. Good luck! biggrin

Band is Drama. It's a simple as that.
I made Flute Section leader as a Sophomore, and that's never happened before so the Senior who thought she was automatically going to get it just because she was upper-class caused so much trouble in the section with another upper class who wanted it too. I got disrespected, ignored, ridiculed, and people talked behind my back.
Just ignore it. People just get jealous when other people get what they can't have. That's just how it goes. Treat them with respect, even though you won't get any back. It just shows to other people that you're mature enough to handle the situation. If they want to throw a fit, let them. Just act as the bigger person. If they feel the need to spread rumors it just shows that they were nowhere ready to handle a job in a leadership position.
(:

Last year one of my best friends beat out Juniors and Seniors and was an Assistant Drum Major as Sophomore. She got no respect but did her best in her position and this year is a Drum Major again as Junior.
Just don't let anyone get to you!

Hope this helps!

User ImageIgnore them.

Play your hardest tune in front of them, acting like its nothing, then offer them a try,

If all else fails, grab a sax and squeek.
