I suggest some tutorials from Deviantart. I just went to a craft store and bought a bag of leather scraps and started messing around until I got the design I wanted. I actually just made some out of Lid rims from old mason jars, Cardboard, leather, and electrical tape for the base, then glued on bb's and nuts and bolts. they turned out pretty well.

im currently working on a pair, the pattern is a bit experimental but once they get slightly more done-ish i'll see if i can post some pics. they're made from brass bits i found from raiding some garages and leather..
