I was in health today when we watched a 20 20 special on anorexia. It was shown in 1994 but it still got me thinking a little. Basicaly what it said is that people with anorexia have problems with their lives like family or whatever. And its a sort of suicide. Its kinda like saying that you don't deserve to live. Personaly I have never talked to any one suffering from this illness, but I was just wondering what you guys thought of this.

I'm most definitely not a fan of anorexia. Although I know that there are many people out there that believe that it's the only way to go. I do know for a fact that the people I know who are recovering anorexics that they've had many family troubles such as depression, alcoholism, divorces and the like.

I think among the most important lessons to be learned from this eating disorder (and others) is something that far too many people outright ignore for take for granted: social influence. Westerners are particularly obessed with independence and the idea of free will. Far too often they forget that we are profoundly social animals, and that our culture, the people we spend time with, and organizations we're members of profoundly influence our decisions in life. Anorexia is one such example. I'd bet my underwear that were it not for the disgustingly distorted body standard set for women, the incidences of anorexia would be pratically negligable.

I doubt that anorexia is a problem which stems directly from the factors you listed, INFS, such as other problems in family life. Correlation does not equal causation, though I don't think that is what you were implying. I haven't known anyone personally who has been anorexic either, but I do remember one time seeing a girl who was so far gone it was sickening to look at her. She was having trouble walking, even. I couldn't look at her. It was just unbearable to see. You'd be better off killing yourself quickly than starving yourself to death slowly. sad

It's been said that there is a certain genetic influence in the cause of anorexia, but there are also some environmental triggers. A bit like alcoholism, really. Except that with alcoholism, you take something in that satisfies your need, while with anorexia nervosa your need is to keep something out.
What I'm trying to say is that it is possible to be genetically predisposed to anorexia, as well as alcoholism. They are both rather difficult to treat, anorexia perhaps the harder. I don't know what to say, other than that I would rather not have either affect a friend or my family.

Anorexia is the symptom, the result of the sympton is sometimes death.

The causes vary. It's not so much 'stress' in itself that causes it though, as per depresiion from family problems.

It seems to be more often a flawed and dangerous reaction to their self-perception, or a need for control in a life where they feel they have none. Or both.
