Kess was glad for her sleeves, despite the heat [although they were rather thin, and didn't do much to overheat her core], shielding her fairer skin from the sun and from the unsavory nature of her chore. In her eyes, there were worse things to be sent to do, after all.
Of course, the sight of a very familiar face [very, rather than familiar, as most in the weyr were familiar to one born and raised] made the task a bit less unpleasant.
"Rin," That casual, warm smile of hers. Lazy, almost, the way it pulled at her mouth, though the girl behind it was anything but. "Not in trouble, I hope." It wasn't really a question, more like a friendly greeting and the slightly shorter, more muscular girl moved to lend a hand.

"May it be a warm night between before that happens," Rinfala laughed, her grin fiendish. Sure, Z'nal was even crankier since the illicit egg-touching, but Rin took her comfort in knowing that as touchy as he might be for the bulk of the Candidates, it had to be even worse for Kyllae. Since she wasn't dimglowed enough to think that she could exact her own revenge, she'd take comfort in the concept of shared misery. "You know Z'nal'll find any excuse, Kess."

"Aye, that's the truth." A merry crinkle at the corner of her dark eyes. "I'm here, too, aren't I?" Kesslan, as well, was a bit disappointed to not be able to touch this next clutch, however it made quite a bit of sense. The latest hatchings had become more and more dramatic.
One had to wonder if it was due to overcrowding and the influx of candidates, some of who would've never been searched in days long past. Rin was definitely the right candidate for Kess to run into about this time. Between the two focused girls, their chores were quickly done, and both had stood for many hatchings, so they understood the tensions and anxiety that would build in one another as the eggs began to harden.
"Hopefully you'll manage to avoid being quite so clumsy this round, mmn?" A slight tease, refering to Rin's scoring during the excitement of the last hatching and Kess shook her head. If she could never see the sands get that out of hand again, she'd be happy.

Grimacing at the reminder, Rinfala shook her head. "You know it. By the Egg, you'd think people would know better than to screech like suncrazed wherries at a Hatching!" Sure, people had been falling over left and right, but if the Weyr couldn't deal with a few fainters, what the shards would they do when Thread fell? "Makes you wonder about people sometimes...some of 'em haven't the sense of a deadglow."

"I'll tell you," Kess wasn't prone to negative statements, but now her tone was quiet, expression a bit dark as she continued working. "Sometimes I don't think half the candidates realize that Thread will fall one day."
She shook her head slowly, serious eyes shifting to meet Rinfala's. "I won't begrudge them a place on the sands this hatching, Rin, but I do know where I won't be standing." A slight laugh. "And shards, if any of them Impress, well, that wouldn't be the dragon for us anyway, eh?"
Although, they'd yet to impress as well. Kess prefered to think it was simply because the right dragons had yet to hatch, not that they weren't worthy to ride. Rin, at least, had been searched.

"Of course not," Rin snorted, with an eyeroll that showed exactly what she thought of those Candidates. She was firmly convinced that intelligence was a minority, not a majority, and those she'd met at the Weyr had only cemented this opinion. "They just think that Impressing will take them away from their parents, or their craft, or whatever their 'problem' is. They don't realize that any beast, no matter how big or smart, is a fardling lot of work." Her grin became distinctly wolfish. "And each dragon that isn't for us is one more to teach them that a dragon is work."

The conversation between the two dwindled as they got down to the hard, dirty work ahead of them, only occasional comments, jokes or murmurs as they worked together to make their duty faster. Luckily, the assignment was by amount accomplished, rather than time spent and after a few hours, Kess straighted, a hand to the small of her back as she stretched strong muscles.
"About time we got cleaned up, you think?" It was interesting, how enough time spent working in a distasteful area made you immune to its lack of charm. For instance, her particular task as the latrines didn't make her any less hungry. After they washed up a bit, of course.
"Getting to the point where I'd take on a bronze for a good bit of food." Non-burnt, badly seasoned food, that was. The ktichens had definitely been a bit off lately, and most of the Candidates knew it was no coincidence.

"Definitely," Rin agreed with a short nod, her braid bobbing slightly with the motion. Stretching muscles that had begun to grow sore and definitely grown tired, she leaned on her shovel. Shards but she hated the latrines...Z'nal assigned them as punishment often enough that there was almost a palpable sense of shame attached to the task. A meal sounded really good right about now.
"Psh, a bronze is nothin'," she smirked. "You must not be that hungry, or you'd take on Cheoth!"

Kess's grin widened as they abandoned the latrines in favor of heading toward the kitchens. Shaking her head, she shrugged. "I had a big breakfast." Her tone was good-natured and the blonde was content to fall quiet as the two scrubbed their skin, thoughts once again on the upcoming hatching.
"By the Egg, Rin," her tone was quiet, reflective as she muttered to the older girl, catching sight of a few of those tittering Candidates they'd spoken of earlier. "I wish you luck upon the sands this clutch."
If at least one of them impressed, she'd be more than happy.

Rinfala rubbed the soapsand over her skin with enthusiasm, relishing the thought that any residual human waste was being thoroughly destroyed. Odd, that...she'd muck out stalls all day without flinching, but latrines made her skin crawl. It was almost as though the stupid in people might be in their waste, and thus rubbing off on her.
...Ew.
Glancing over at Kess, she gave her friend a smile that, for once, wasn't snarky or sarcastic. It was a rare sort of genuine smile that Rin didn't use often. "Hey, you too. The right dragon's gotta be in there for you somewhere."

"So they say, and so I'm wont to believe." That easy smile pulled at her mouth again and Kess fell into silence as she scrubbed at her skin, thoughts far away from her body, with the current clutch. One could never predict a hatching, though many of the Candidates made a game of it. Kesslan tried not to.
They two finished and the blonde stretched again before giving herself a dry. "Shards, that job is disgusting." The admittance was said with the hearty laugh of a girl glad to be done with a task.
Some Klah, provided it lacked extra, unwanted ingredients, would be welcome!

"Better than the other option, wouldn't you say?" Smirking, Rinfala dried off her hands with the rough efficiency of one who was used to getting their hands dirty. "Worse than dealing with herdbeast droppings. Maybe worse than wherry pens." Giant steaming piles of bird crap...yum. On second thought, wherries were definitely worse. At least people put it in a hole in the ground. Or the rock. Whatever.

"Definitely not worse than the wherry pens!" With a grossed out laugh, Kess squeezed her friend's shoulder in a quick show of affection before the two headed in to grab what they could for dinner.
They lingered a bit, eating and chatting, as they didn't share quarters and this would be, barring some strange close-friend emergency, be the last time they saw each other for the day.
A goodnight wish, as well as luck at the hatching, and the two parted ways.
