The story Echo, Ryuunosuke and Azumi all exist in takes place in Japan in the future. Things haven't changed much so there really isn't anything fancy in terms of technology though old values pick-up more during this era, so a lot of modern buildings are knocked down to build old-fashioned ones.

During this time, a scientist in India discovers an object which he calls 'Kshar' that embodies supernatural abilities that people can develop. At the same time, the concept of 'Voodoo' is put into better light as people become more and more interested in the occult. 'Voodoo' is sort of like 'black magic' and when people dabble in it, it usually leads them down a dark path. there are four class of Voodoo which is simply levels 1 to 4 (one being the lowest and four being the highest). Voodoo is most easily described as reasons for supernatural sightings. Type 1 Voodoo is the simple use of paper and dolls to create intangible apparitions commonly known as 'ghosts'. they are also called 'Shikigami' used by temples during the old age. The ability's span increases with each level, Type 4 being the highest in which the user can control people instead of just inanimate objects and can manipulate them fully, which can result to genocide and cults (in which people commit mass suicide). In the story, Voodoo is deemed highly dangerous, no matter what levels and becomes illegal, but that doesn't stop many people from trying it. Usually, they do it for revenge or just because they like to kill.

The Academy (not quite named yet still in decision) is an Anti-Voodoo organization that trains people with unique abilities to fight and research Voodoo users. To be entered in, you must have studied Kshar and have been a wandering student under the Academy's name. When you enter in, you are put into groups. The Field students are the ones who specialize in battle, so they fight against Voodoo users and always work in pairs. Research students study Kshar and Voodoo and classify them, coming up with effective ways to oppose them, each student in the Research facility are assigned with a pair from the Field section. They are often considered support, they must know how to fight, but they are usually just protected as they do research. Senior students are always the best ones, but not necessarily.

Ryuunosuke and the person Echo is based off of (originally a girl named Takoko) are Senior students are the Academy and are in charge of teaching younger students as well as supervising them on assignments. They also handle larger missions. Ryuu and takoko are one of the top students at the academy and work as a pair : I
