Normally I talk like I am - I guess 'educated' would be the word, but when I get pissed off, my slang and jargon starts coming out... and in the course of going off on someone I called them ignorant and they said that the way I talk is ignorant...

So basically, discuss;;;
-What makes a person ignorant?
-Does the way someone talk make them ignorant?
-What is your definition of ignorant?
-Stupid people who can't keep their mouth shut and virtually asked to be yelled at razz

well i dont think people who use slang and jargon are talking ignorant, you can be educated but still talk like where you were raised and your enviroment, unless you just have horrible ebonics, cant read....etc.

What makes a person ignorant..
I think its like they think they know everything, and can't be open to anothers answer. ((confused))

[The saying "ignorance is bliss" kind of points to the true meaning of the word. For example, I'm "ignorant" when it comes to rap and poker. I just never learned much about either, therefore I'm ignorant in those areas. So I suppose I define ignorance as just, well, "not knowing." Likewise, a person who is ignorant could also just be unaware or uninformed. 3nodding

BUT, in of course, every meaning to every word isn't in the dictionary. biggrin So, of course some people mean to use "ignorant" as an insult, trying to imply that someone is being foolish, and probably on purpose.

Quite frankly, I call that "stupidity" when it gets to that point. If you're seriously refusing to learn, then, yea, you're stupid in my book. mad

But I also agree with Ebony Beauty--that ignorant could be know-it-alls who are very closed-minded.

I don't mind slang and jargon, but you have to be able to make yourself understood. Speaking in too much slang while trying to make a valid point in a serious conversation could be considered stupid, rather than ignorant. xp

About the stupid people who virtually asked to be yelled at: I deal with them daily...dozens of them. gonk ]

Exactly...

It all comes with your community...

I live in as you would say a 'ghetto' neighborhood...so I use slang to communicate with the people around me. But If I'm out in the workforce or the 'real world', I am a totally different person.

you have to be able to talk to any body anywhere. so slang is good but you have to know when to use it

[I don't like slang, (unless I'm trying to be funny), but I do agree. You should know how to talk to get your point across no matter who you're talking to. 3nodding ]

. o O I think the only time I have a problem with language errors is when they are obviously errors. Slang is one thing, but if you seriously don't know the difference between 'women' and 'woman', I consider that to be ignorant.

However, Passion is correct; from the Latin base, the word ignorant (of) means without knowledge of, so it could really apply to anyone. In my opinion, it applies to those who not only do not know, but also don't make any attempt to find out/learn. O o .

My def'n of ignorant is when someone knows that what they are doing is wrong or what they are saying is wrong but they say or do it anyway....it gets really annoying...

[ xd If it weren't for slang, some really funny comedians wouldn't be so funny. biggrin If it were't for slang, I'd have nothing to mock or make fun of. gonk

Therefore, slang has many purposes. Like butter. mrgreen ]

Slang is counter-culture. I love it, and love using it and hearing it. There are exceptions, but that's on the person, not the language. And hearing a guy use slang with a thick country accent is sexy 3nodding . (I had this experience with a guy in one of my classes. Every time he spoke, I just thought "Awww!! I wanna hug you!! 4laugh )
I don't like people mocking it or saying it's ignorant. People can be ignorant, and it can be used ignorantly, but not a counter language. Is spanish ignorant cause we don't understand it, or translated, it's not grammaticly correct? Nope. It's just different.

[In my opinion, Spanish and American English slang can't compare because the latter isn't really a "language."

Slang to me is funny (sure, I suppose it can be sexy too, though). But I am guilty of making fun of it. I mean, c'mon...people make a living mocking slang: I remember seeing a stand-up routine based entirely on making fun of Ebonics and slang; the comic would say what the audience thought were regular words from the dictionary, but they were misspelled and turned out to be horrible examples of slang. xd I wish I could think of some good examples, but my memory fails me right now. xp ]

Everything get's made fun of. It just irked me when this girl (Caucausian) tried to use it as proof that "all blacks were racist and seperate themselves from intelligent people with slang." That went too far.
