Physical Description: Balin's what you would call a big guy. Not because he's towering over you. Well, okay, he's somewhat taller than normal, but only a bit. It's his build that gives him labels like those. He's been doing a lot of work for a long time. A good work out is almost a nervous twitch for him. He does it when he's stressed or when there's nothing better do, whether it's something that actually needs doing or just lifting whatever heavy object he can find many times. Staying in good shape is part of his self-promoted 'all you can be' campaign, so he's not lacking in the muscle department.
As long as you're not crying (Lord forbid!), he'll lock eyes with you without hesitation, and then you will see a pair of dark, dark brown ones staring back at you. Being a fan of the outdoors and having fallen prey to the sun many a time over the years, Balin has a nice tan. Which is good, because otherwise his bald head might burn all the time! If he did have hair, it'd be brown. According to his mother. But that isn't an invitation to go talking to her.
He wears very loose, light clothing and it isn't out of the ordinary for him to be lacking in the shirt department.
Personality: Knowledge, intelligence, competence. Three things Balin values more than anything else. He has high standards for himself and fulfills them within the best of his ability (and then a little more) each day. He does not hold other people to them, but prefers the company of those up to par, so to speak. Which basically means even though he might not be expecting a lot of someone, he still might choose to remove himself from their company should they be, for example, an emotional type.
To a lot of people, that's worse. He's more awkward and disinterested as opposed to being shy. What most don't understand is that this is due not to looking down on someone, but just not knowing how to deal with them. Balin doesn't know how to react to hyperactive people, overly-optimistic people, upset people, small children... I could finish the list, but we'd be here all day. And, oh, the crying! The day he saw a girl cry, who knows what he'd do! Worse, what if it was another man?! He might just fall over dead! No lie!
Unfortunately, he has little energy to spare for socializing to get the practice he needs in. Most of his efforts are put into two things: observing and problem solving. When he comprises a plan, he thinks of various ways to help patch it should anything go wrong. As a hobby, Balin creates strategies. For what? All kinds of problems. Just not those social ones he's not very good with. He can't tell you how to break up with your boyfriend, though maybe he could suggest some methods of how to get him to quiet down?
He is very good at understanding things and understanding them quickly, though his interest is more in applying these ideas. Balin sees the world for it what it is. Reality is not lost on him even in the most chaotic of times. Many accuse him of being stubborn; he gives off a vibe like he is. On the contrary, Balin is dedicated to finding the best way to handle things, not his way (unless they happen to be one in the same). Almost always he is open to hearing alternative methods. If not for his lack of skill in the art of human interaction, he would be a fantastic leader. Maybe he still would, but it's likely we'll never know.
This young man spends a lot of time thinking. Perhaps, too much time. He can't stand when things are unclear or don't make sense to him. When this happens, he will dedicate time strictly to figuring something out. He has an uncontrollable need for closure with problems and with life. It's enough to drive a guy up the wall! In times of aggravation (or even boredom), he will obsess over a mindless, repetitive task. Pacing or lifting things, usually.
He has a very, very, very somewhat secret fear uneasiness of being up too high that he's trying to squash like a bug. Because, more than anything, Balin wants to drive himself to be the very best man he can be.
(It's a fear, but shhh!)
History: Balin is the eldest of three brothers and the first born son of who may as well be a single mother. His father's a lazy fellow; never had much of an interest in his boys. Not to be deterred, Balin took the roll of both sibling and father to his brothers as he grew up. Knowing this allows one much better insight into why he is how he is, but his lips are sealed so tightly even the biggest gossips don't know his background in great detail.
Other than that, not much noteworthy has happened in his life. He's done what he could to help his mother with this and that, learning what needs to be done to keep a household running smoothly. For years she's urged him to go out and find something just for him. He's finally listened.
