Luna held mariel by the hand as the summer sun beat down on the both of them. Ah the SUN Luna LOVED IT. That was why she had decided to bring Mariel to the city pool today. It was a great place and fortunately it had one of those kid pools that was only about 2 feet deep. Luna wanted to make sure that mariel would take to the water and all the people beore she taught her how to really swim in the bigger pool that went to about 5 feet. She took a deep breath soaked in the sun and looked down at her little girl.

"Mariel today we swim!"

Mariel looked up at her mother with a confused expression. She didnt know what swimming was, was it food? maybe a dance? she tried to sudy her mothers face to try and see what she meant but with the sun above her she had to squint and so could only look at her mother through her eyelashes.

"mama, whats swim?"

Luna laughed and began to lead mariel to the grassy area near the kids pool.

"Swim is like life chikita, its when you walk and move in de water."

Luna answered with her familiar spanish accent. She layed out a towel in a nice patch of shade and started to rummage through her bag for some goggles for mariel before getting her all the way to the pool.

As Luna rummaged Mariel began to let her gaze wander, there were so many people! She was a little tense and afraid to be farther than a few feet from her mother. But when her gaze settled on the water she was almost transfixed. it was so SHINY!! She began to wonder what it would feel like, taste like, even sound like! The wheels in her mind began to turn as she stared at the water and watched as it interacted with everyone in it. In her mind it seemed almost alive since it was moving and splashing everywhere. She would have been afraid of it if she wasnt so curious to go and meet it herself!. Luna finished rummaging and Mariel led the way to the water, she looked back every few seconds to make sure her mom was stil there but she wanted to go see what it was like and she couldnt help letting out a squeal of delight when Luna lowered her into the knee deep (for Luna) water.

It was one of those days where Valeri decided, after their morning medication ritual, that he was going to expose little Miranda to something new. The purple haired man often did this at random but it was perhaps not as random as some might believe as he had already bought his daughter a swimsuit, in her size surprisingly enough. When he announced that they were going to the pool and why the small, chubby rat-girl practically jumped into her swimsuit when he got it out for her to look at.

After everything had been arranged and he had pulled on a shirt and a pair of swim trunks they made their way to pool together with Miranda wearing her wide-brimmed hat and pince-nez style sunglasses and carrying a small bag filled with her sun block, a couple of water toys, small snacks, two towels, and two bottles of water. Valeri held onto her free hand in one hand and limped along with the help of his cane that he used in the other hand.

When they had arrived they set up camp a few spaces away from where Luna and Mariel had set up camp themselves. Miranda gazed over at the small kid's pool with and suddenly felt a bit nervous, that looked DEEP to her. The small rat-girl reached and took up her tail and began fidgeting with it nervously for a few moments before Valeri took one of her hands and began to lead her to the pool.

"Don't be so nervous," Valeri said in what he felt was his best soothing tone as he moved to sit, putting his cane next to his legs for easy access, on the ledge of the pool setting a foot in to show that there was no harm but Miranda still looked mildly uncertain about the whole thing and clung to his side. Valeri uttered a small sigh and looked at a loss as he looked around for help while his hands petted at his daughter's pale hair that showed around the hat.

Mariel had managed to wiggle away from Luna who was now just sitting and splashing water around herself to keep cool every once in a while. mariel noticed that Luna always kept her in sight and it made the curious little girl a little more bold. The water was not too deep, Mariel found that if she sat flat on her rump it came to just under her chin so she half crawled half walked through it weaving her way around the other people. No one seemed particularly interesting and her natural timidity made her give everyone as wide a berth as possible, which admitedly wasnt much in a kids pool.

Mariel sat in the middle of the pool and began to take in her surroundings. She had been overjoyed to find water soothing and cool since her fur had made the sun alot hotter to her than it was for Luna. But now she needed someone to play with, she knew this, and yet she was half determined to show everyone that she could be fine on her own and that being timid was ok. But just before she could make that desision she saw a man and a little white girl coming towards the pool. Or in the mans case limping. Mariel was facinated at first by the mans purple hair, she had never seen a color like that in the wild before! She had been so certain that those kinds of colors only came in crayons and the occasional marker. Mariel wanted to get a better look but there were other kids in her way so she started to make her way towards the two.

When she reached them they were both standing next to the water but not inside yet. Mariel had intended to study the mans hair but the little girl next to him caught her eye and was much more interesting! She was a chubby little child but she had a tail just like Mariel! Granted it was a pink tail and by the looks a wee bit longer but mariel had never met anyone with a tail like hers before! The closest she had come was with her baby sitter Ligeia but he had a feather tail so it didnt count. Up till now Mariel Had been just staring at the two with her big blue eyes and body submerged in the water but now she got to her knees in the water and brought out her tail to get the other little girls attention. Mariel held her tail in one hand and for a second was a bit dissapointed that it looked so soppy but that didnt matter!

"You have tail too?!" She half asked half pointed out to her new curiosities.

Luna had intednded to keep Mariel in her inmediate area but of course that little girls curiosity had her swimming all over the place! But Luna kept a sharp eye to watch for the little brown child in her deep blue one piece bathing suit. She noticed that mariel seemed to find another child and parent from D-Corp and so Luna made her way nearby but not in the inmediate area she was curious to see how this would play out. mariel had never talked first before but by the way she was holding her tail and pointing and the other little girls tail Luna realised that mariel had never seen anyone else with a tail. She laughed to herself, of course! Mariel must be having a happy attack, it had never occured to Luna that mariel would hold tails in such high regaurd.

Miranda had been about to complain, more like whine really, about the water and how deep it seemed even though the water to come up just below Valeri's knee because of how he sat at the pool, his feet were even firmly planted at the bottom of the pool. Miranda peered over the edge still clinging at her guardian's side but soon her shaded eyes caught sight of a small gray haired brown furred girl as she approached holding a sopped tail and asking a question.

The rat-girl's eyes went from the face of the girl to the wet tail and she couldn't help but let out a small giggle at the sight of it. It wasn't that the tail was ugly or anything but it looked so sad all draped over the hand and soaking wet! When the giggles died down chubby girl nodded and grinned, "Yeh'th! I ha'th tail~," Miranda said as she held forward the pink tip of her own tail for Mariel's gaze. "'m Miranda, wha'th your name?"

Valeri let his daughter interact with the other girl and couldn't help but note the similar qualities of the two children; perhaps that child was also from that crazy D-Corp place. He gazed around just to see who all was around as he did so he noted the woman watching the girls and furrowed his brow a bit but still made a small wave at the lady to show that she had been noted by him at least, but until his daughter released him he couldn't do much but sit there and be a cling-to object for his daughter.

Mariel grinned at getting a response and let go of her tail, which splashed messily back into the water untill it twitched away like a fish darting behind her. Mariel looked up at the new girl, Miranda, and decided that sharing her own name would be the proper thing to do at this point.

"I'm Mariel"

Mariel anounced proudly but almost inmediately realised that she had spoken loudly and so she dropped into the water and laid back her ears. She looked around with those big blue orbs to make sure no one noticed before once again standing up and looking at the little white girl in front of her. Wait why was her new tailed friend so high up..Mariel looked at the edge of the pool and realised that Miranda was not in the water! Mariel patted the water and asked.

"You gonna swim?"

Luna saw the parent of the little white girl wave and she gave an aknowledging smile and nod, she could see that he was at the mercy of his little one for the moment and so she made no rush to go say hi. Besides she was relaxing, and she knew that if Mariel coaxed that little...mouse? maybe...not a hamster she had a tail...well anyway if Mariel coaxed that little girl into the water they would prabably be floating all over the place. Thank god that the pool was small enough that you could prabably see the whole thing from any place in it. She also didnt want to make the man uncomfortable the last time she met a parent he was all akward and unsocialized. If this man wanted to talk to her he would so for now she would be content with watching the girls and smiling.

"'s goo'th to mee'chu." Miranda replied her lisp got on her nerves and a brief look of consternation crossed her pale features to show this fact but it was soon gone and she was smiling again, briefly she had put the subject on the backburner of her young mind. When asked if she was going to swim she looked uncertain, her fingertips gripping at her guardian's shirt as if to make sure he wasn't going to suddenly get up and limp off on her without any prior consent. "I 'unno," she replied softly looking into the water, "loo'th scary to me."

Valeri sighed softly at his daughter's words and lightly shook his head, "C'mon at least try to get in, I am sure your new friend would love to splash about with you in the pool," he was trying to appeal to her desire for friendship and play.

The rat-girl turned her face toward her purple haired guardian, "Only if you hol'th my han'th," she said uncertainly.

"Sure," he replied hoping the other little girl would help him with coaxing his daughter along without having to do much prompting, as he gently helped his daughter into the pool.

Mariel was a bit confused as to how Miranda could find the water scary, after all it was FACINATING! but then she remembered that Luna had explained to her once that not everyone saw things the same. Maybe this was one of those times.....well maybe she could SHOW Miranda how interesting the water was. Mariel smiled and bounced in the water as Miranda started to make her way in with the help of her parent.

"Is not scary, is fun!" Mariel squeaked and as she thought about the summer heat she decided to add "its cold, but in a good way."

Mariel watched her new friend get into the water slowly as she slowly grew more excited. She hadnever had a friend with a tail before! Mariel let her mind wander through all the uses of tails in games and such and also was excited that they were in a pool. She didnt know why but the water made her feel better about being on her own. Mariel spllashed a little bit just to show how harmless the water could be and to release a little bit of her extra excitement.

"Is fun! not scary seeeee" She decided to emphasise her point one last time before Miranda got into the water.

Luna smiled as she saw the man starting to help his child into the water, she sure was a cute little thing, but of course in Lunas mind nothing was as cute as Mariel. That was her mothers privelege. But all things considered Luna did hope that mariel would make some new friends, she really didnt have much and without playdates and the like Luna would have to keep taking mariel with her when she cleaned houses. Luna looked at mariel with searching eyes. She secretly hoped that there was a jovial social butterfly inside that timid exterior so that Luna could drop her off at friends houses or even school for that matter without worrying that mariel would get bored and go off exploring.

It was one of those things that before she saw the water and actually had to face the idea of getting into it, well it was a little scary now. Okay, it was a lot scary. It was a lot less scary thanks to the help of her Papi and the very excited Mariel. Once in she held onto her guardian's hand in a near death-grip as if it were a lifeline. Miranda blinked at Mariel and offered a small smile and nodded, "Ye'th. No'th at all'th," she murmured uncertainly as she wandered a bit closer to her new found friend, using the length of her guardian's arm almost like a tether as he didn't seem to want to get into the pool entirely.

Val chuckled lightly and wiggled his fingertips and just watched her. What a funny little thing she was at times but he would wait patiently until she was ready to let him go, he wanted her to learn on her own that it was perfectly alright.

Mariel stopped bouncing in the water and watched excitedly as her new friend began to get into the cool water. Her tail swished behind her like a slow moving rudder, causing slow steady ripples to flow like a dress around Mariel. She couldnt wait to play games with her new friend, granted this was her first time in a pool and she wasnt exactly sure what kind of games you played in such a watery environment but she was sure they would figure something out and it would be great. She watched Miranda hold on to her fathers hand and wondered if Miranda was worried about drowning, she decided to address this and maybe ease mirandas fears a little bit.

"Its not deep." Mariel smiled and stood up tall to ease her fears. well hopefully.

After a few moments of a tug and realizing that her Papi wasn't following her any deeper she released him reluctantly but soon migrated over to Mariel and reached for one of her arms with wide eyes brimming over her sunglasses a bit. Her heart felt like it was pounding in her chest. Despite the other girl ducking down and showing that this was indeed a very shallow pool, Miranda was still uncertain, this was a common ailment amongst young children and new things that are much bigger than they had imagined in their mind.

Miranda stood huddled near Mariel a moment before she relaxed and looked back at her Papi and waved at him, "Gogogo~. Don'th wan' you here. I's not a baby!" she chided good naturedly with a giggle now that she had a handle on things.

Valeri rolled his eyes and laughed a bit, "Keep your hat on, Sweet-stuff," he said quietly as he stood and moved to sit where he had set up camp with his and Miranda's things with a bit of a limp and using his cane to help himself along.

All Miranda gave in response was a noncommittal, "Kay!" and then turned her attention to Mariel.

Mariel smiled encouragingly to her new friend as she shooed away her guardian. They didn't need adults! They were perfectly capable of having amazing adventures and staying safe all by themselves. Mariel looked around at how much space they had to work with and tried to think of a game that they could play in the water. She had never been to a pool before so she wasnt sure exactly what you did in the water besides splash around like some other kids had been doing. She couldn't yet swim properly since Luna was unable to teach her but the water was too shallow to swim anyway. Mariel once more let her eyes fall on her new companion and she smiled.

"So what we gonna do now? You know any games?" She asked as she knelt down in the water. It was a hot day and she rather liked the cool feeling of the water on her furry skin. Suddenly she realized that Miranda had a hat on, she wasn't sure exactly why this hadnt been obvious from the beginning but her attention had been on getting Miranda into the pool so she allowed this lapse of question asking to go unnoticed. But she couldnt resist asking about it. "Why do ya have a hat?" Mariel herself was bare headed except for her hair and she had only ever seen Luna wear a baseball cap or handkerchief wrapped around her head when she was at work cleaning houses. Maybe this girl had a job to! Mariel decided to make sure. "Do ya have a hat cause you gots a job?!" a job sounded like something exciting so Mariel waited wide eyed for an answer.

Miranda was letting herself settle for a moment and blinked at the question, "Dunno any'th wa'ther games," she admitted though the idea of being in water still made her heart do funny and not good things in her chest for the moment. Each time the water pushed or someone strange brushed against her she uttered a small squeak and moved closer to her new found friend, obviously she already trusted Mariel to help keep her safe.

When asked about her hat and then asked if she has a job the rat girl gave a small giggle and shook her head, "Nono! I need'th hat to keep my head'th th'afe from'th the th'un," she explained cheerfully, "the th'un hur'th my s'th'kin if I don' has lo'shun and s'th'uff on." Miranda's small fingertips hovered above the water as she peered over at the other girl with a bit of a bucktoothed smile. "I don' like havin' to wear'th it," Miranda admitted with a bit of a sulk to her tone. She wanted to be able to not have to wear any of this stuff and just play like it seemed Mariel could.

A small pang of jealousy roamed through the ratgirl.

Mariel looked at Mirandas hat and wondered what it would be like to have to wear a hat all the time. She was still young and so couldnt really plan past the next day so wearing a hat for a few days seemed kinda cool to her. "But its such a pretty hat!" Mariel walked around Miranda to see the full hat and was surprised to see that the brim extended all the way around! She had never seen such a hat! She had only ever seen the baseball caps that Luna wore and once in a while wore a hanker chief tied over her hair to be like her mother but this was new. "Your hat goes all the way around? Hows it do that?" Mariel was happy that Miranda seemed to trust her already and she was excited to have a new friend with such interesting things and of course a TAIL!

She decided they needed to figure out a water game....they could play...maybe.....tag? no there were too many people they would get in the way. what could she work with...there were people, strange things, all kinds of noise.....and it was wet...what was wet?.....A large smile broke over Mariels face and she looked to Miranda. "Lets play adventures! We can be like indiana jones! We gots ta find the treasure!" She emphasized treasure because naturally shiny things were always the best things to find. She had no dbout that people were dropping things all over the place and they could search and adventure and hide from bad guys and maybe save a damsel in distress...whatever that was. She waited excitedly for Mirandas response, hoping she liked the idea.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 16, 2009 5:43 am

Miranda had blushed a tad when her hat was being complimented and that seemed to make the whole ordeal a little better for the ratgirl. She let her new friend meander around as she pleased as her fingertips touched at the water and blinked a bit at the question. She had never thought to question it and the only answer she could give was, "S'ma'the da'th way'th," her speech lisped wildly much to the small girl's annoyance. Miranda stuck her tongue out a little and uttered a light random razzing sound before she just grinned at Mariel.

Her fingertips danced at the water surface thoughtfully even as Mariel was also pondering games. She glanced up just as a smile appeared on Mariel's face and Miranda's own expression became that of hope! The game was thought up and once Miranda heard it she uttered a small pleased squeak, "Yeh'th!" Miranda replied all too happily. That sounded like a fun game!

"Wha'th our fir'th't th'reasure?" She canted her head to the side as she waited for Mariel to begin the game with the first rumored treasure of their adventure.

Mariel let out an excited squeak when Miranda agreed to their game and began to look around immediately. She had to find a treasure and a goal while she had Miranda's attention. Something shiny sparkled in the water and Mariels eyes darted towards it. Someone seemed to have dropped something into the pool on their way out Mariel couldnt see what it was exactly but it was shiny and that made it treasure. She put a finger to her lips and pointed to the shiny so Miranda would know where to look. "Ok first we gotta be real quiet and stay in the water so the bad guys dont see us." Mariel crouched in the water until just her head and shoulders were above water after all it was shallow. Then she began to move as secretly and silently as possible. She looked back to make sure Miranda was following and smiled, her hat was PERFECT camouflage.

Of course two children doing their best to be sneaky were more than obvious in a public pool and some people were moving aside for them to go through but the girls never saw this, they were being sneaky and heading towards something shiny. However Luna could see it and she laughed, she knew what Mariel was doing and she got an idea. no doubt the girls were gonna be hungry in a little while with the sun and all the moving around. So she strategically placed the tin foil wrapped sandwiches on the towel near her for the girls to find when they got hungry.
