It was cold; the thought was only vaguely registered as she wandered rather aimlessly down the street. Eyes distant, face thoughtful, she looked lost in some other world as she walked, half mad even, with her tank top and short skirt despite the crisp weather, hair a tangled mess because of the wind. Clutched to her chest was a small pile of books; text books, actually, from a morning spent at classes. What the young woman was pondering so heavily was a discussion they'd had in her class on death and dying, and how it impacted the human psyche. She was wondering if she was very afraid to die, and couldn't quite figure it out. It was a tricky thing, death. She didn't want it any time soon, but to know what lay on the other side of the veil... what a thing that would be!
Suddenly, the skies opened up, and it began to rain.
Shocked, Cerridwyn looked up at the heavens, eyes wide. "When did it get so cloudy?" she asked aloud, then flinched as a drop hit her right between the eyes. "Hummmm... I should... get inside.” she decided with a nod, then paused in her walk, looking about for a promising building. There was a bagel and coffee shop, a little boutique... all places that would do, but nothing that really caught her fancy. Then, suddenly, she saw it. Something she'd never noticed here before, despite walking by almost every day; a library. "How did I miss that I wonder... ah well. Good thing I found it now. I can start my research." Nodding, she started for the library with new purpose in her stride, much of the absent madness gone from her eyes now that she was again focused.
On entering the building, she didn't go very far; after all, she had a growing sense of strangeness that wouldn't let her simply burst in and wander as she usually would. "Hello?" she called, looking about, trying to get a feel for the building’s vibe. The energies of a place could tell many stories, after all. "Hello, is anyone here?" She felt vaguely guilty as she stood in the entryway, dripping water, but there was no help for it; she was wet, after all, and it wasn't like she carried a towel around in her purse.

It was always a surprise when a character from a book came out of his or hers pages. Sure, he had seen strange random characters from small time stories appear and as well as some of the Alice in Wonderland cast to the boy from 'Where the Wild Things Are', but it was still kind of strange.
The librarian had gotten good at predicting when storybook characters would appear but it was only on the off chance, which was when he had the book coincidentally already with him. That was the case for this one. It had been a random pick, or rather, it was a book he took away from two mischievous children, particularly the Mad Hatter and the Chesire Cat, who were fighting over it for whatever unknown reason. Almost tearing it apart, he had confiscated it only to find that the book had a mysterious feeling to it.
The book was called 'The Black Jewels Trilogy' and he recalled he read it some time ago. An interesting and dark read, to say the least, and he was almost intrigued at the fact that a character would soon appear from it. Being as dark as it was, however, he was slightly worried about the outcome. Sometimes when the characters appeared, they weren't children and had all their memories in tact. It happened only once, but, who knew what could happen?
Just as he began to flip through the pages once more, he heard a voice come from the front of the library. Sure, it might have seemed to strange that he could a voice when he was all the way in the back of the first floor, but the library wasn't ordinary. It was a useful sort of building if not a troublesome one, but it always did make a habit of notifying Ink if there were any newcomers.
Making his way to the front, he began to see a figure come into view and become clearer yet as he came closer. A young woman stood there, looking rather drenched and a bit lost. "May I help you?"

"Help me?" she asked, that dazed look coming back onto her face. "I'm not sure. Maybe if you had a towel, or a blanket... or even a change of clothes..." she murmured, still thinking about how she was getting the floor wet. "I'd bring them back as soon as I was dry." Then she smiled at him brightly, her whole face lighting up. "You have a nice building here. Good vibes. It is yours right?"
Then, without waiting for a response, and forgetting that she'd wanted to drip-dry before entering any further, she approached him. "'Black Jewels Trilogy', hm? I haven't read that in forever. Good book... poor Jaenelle. Makes me want to be a Black Widow. With a Sapphire Jewel rank, I think. I wouldn't do well with too much power. I'd lose myself in it..." For a moment, it seemed like she would ramble on further, but then she snapped herself out of it, smiling at the Librarian again. "Sorry."
There was a moment where she was silent then, a whole heartbeat where she managed to keep herself contained, and then she was off again. "I'm looking for some information, by the way. I'm supposed to do a report on religious sacrifices in the ancient world... I don't suppose you could direct me towards some books that would help, could you?"

"Ah..." Ink said thoughtfully before smiling and nodding "Oh yes, I inherited this building from guardian, it's been standing for many many years." He said before looking down at the book in his hand and then back up at her.
Ah. Maybe her coming here wasn't just a coincidence.
"Neither have I, but I do recall it was quite the read. No need to apologize, everyone loves a good book." He replied light-heartedly before gesturing for her to follow "Well, we can get you some clothes first, the section for what you're looking for is far from here and will take a bit of a walk. You might get a bit cold if you don't dry up."
Placing the book down on the front desk, he turned towards the middle aisle and began to travel down it. The further he walked down it, the longer it seemed to get and the book count increased tremendously. The library wasn't silent to say the least, despite it's large size and grand amount of open space, the sound of whispers and shuffling feet from the children bounced off the walls and filled the building.
"Ah yes, don't mind the children if you feel like you're being watched. they're simply curious, we don't get many strangers here." He commented without a thought as he rounded the corner at the end of the aisle, turning towards a grand door. "Please wait a moment." He said before slipping behind them after carefully unlocking it with an intricate-looking key.
It didn't take long for him to step out again, holding the door open "I set some clothes out for you, hopefully they will fit. I spread out different kinds for you so please choose them to your liking. After you've changed we can go look for some books for you." His voice seemed to cascade down and fill almost everywhere, even into the tiny crevices between the books.
It might have seemed a bit strange to the woman, the building, the children and perhaps the librarian who seemed rather prepared.
Safe to say, Ink was used to it, after all, most who entered into the library expected nothing of it.

All her mind could really grasp was the concept that she'd be getting dry clothes. As she followed Ink, she floated along in her own happy little world, dreaming of not being wet. It wasn't until about halfway through the walk that she even began to notice the whispers, let alone the children that they came from. Finally, however, she realized that the place was crawling with 'kidlets' as she called them, and they did all indeed seem to be very curious. She giggled and waved at a few, twiddling her fingers in a friendly gesture.
She also began to wonder where their parents were.
While he was busy unlocking the door, she dug in her purse, until she found a small package of mints. She didn't have enough for them all of course, but... "Do you think any of the children would like one?" she asked, tipping her head to one side, offering the pack to Ink to hand out if he so chose. Then, eyes distant as she pondered what a strange place this was - though she still felt it had good vibes, there was no doubt about that - she entered into the other room, glancing over the clothes. Much to her delight, there was a dress there. It was of course, much too much for the occasion, but she didn't care, and soon she was encased in a creation of satin and lace, hair tied back into a braid secured by a tie she'd found in her purse.
On getting back into the main part of the library, she giggled and did a twirl, clearly delighted with the outfit. "Thank you very much, Mr... um... Librarian." she murmured, giving him another warm smile. "Before we continue on, can I ask... all the children... why are they here? Was there some sort of activity for kids today, or does your library cater to children especially or..." she trailed off, then suddenly stuck her face right into his. "Or is there something special going on?" It was something she'd always dreamed of, after all... something exciting and exotic happening to her, bringing her out of her hum-drum life and spicing things up. Maybe... just maybe, this was it.

The woman seemed oddly content with the world that was the library. In fact, she seemed a bit too happy. The stock reaction was confusion, at best, but she seemed to show more curiousity like a child who just discovered an interesting place in the forest.
He gratefully took the minutes and gave her his thanks before watching her disappear into the room. Looking around, he noticed a few children wandering towards where they were and looking suspiciously at his hands. He bent down, his hands open "She gave me candy, would you like some?"
The bunch that were there nodded eagerly before flying towards his hand and taking one of the deliciously sweet snacks. He watched, with a smile, as they ate with satisfied smiles, telling them they needed to give their thank yous later. They all had agreed to the notion, only to dart away in every direction once the door opened again.
He stood up and his smiled at her obvious content expression. "You may call me Ink." He began with his gaze slowly drifting towards the children "Ah, yes, they are..." He continued only to be cut off at the surprise of her sudden closeness in proximity. Then he laughed and took a few steps back "They are always here, to put it simply, they live here. At least, they do until I find them homes.
"Come." He said as he turned around, heading towards the first of the grand staircases "I'll explain it to you as we make or way to the back. It's a very... interesting sort of thing to say the least. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it's up to you. Why, you might ask, is the story a questionable one? The explanation is rather simple since..." He paused and his eyes shimmered knowingly "All these children came from books."

She blinked once, twice, three times, then laughed. "That's a very funny joke, Mr Ink. Perhaps if I was younger I might be more inclined to... to..." Then she stopped and looked - really looked at what children where within eyesight. "Oh my." she whispered, one hand flying up to cover her mouth. "I... don't believe you're joking at all, are you?"
She gulped and shook her head, then laughed. "You know, I've always wanted something wonderful to happen to me, and then I almost didn't recognize it when it did happen! I think I spent too long arguing theology today, and it dulled my wits." She seemed strangely at ease with this knowledge that children could spring from books, that they could live off the page as breathing beings. "How does it work? I mean, I realize it must be magic, but do you do it, Mr. Ink, or do the books themselves do it? Or maybe it has more to do with the place... the library enchants the books that have been here long enough, or something like that. You know, I read a theory once that we determine our own realities... maybe you began to think of the characters as real, and so it happened! Oh, this is wonderful!" she laughed again, then looked around once more, eyes eager this time.
"Do you think I might... talk to some of the children? I like kidlets. I substituted when I was younger, before I started writing... I usually got along well with them. Oh, or would you rather they not talk to people too much? I imagine the more they interact with this world, the more they'll change from who they were in the book... or maybe that's not right. Maybe they'd really grow and become who they were meant to be." she paused, pondering a moment, then smiled again. "I guess it would really depend on the strength of the characters original writing, hmm?"

Ink chuckled as the woman slowly pulled herself into a magical reality that was far beyond the possible. He listened quietly as he began to dazzle herself with the world she stepped into, it was amusing to see her so indulged in the idea of it. Even a few of the children giggled at her enthusiasm, clearly entertained by her expressive actions and words, even if they could only cpmprehend about half of what she was saying.
"You're very good at guessing, it is magic, yes, that much is obvious but I'm surprised you suggested the library. This building is very old and mischievous, it often likes to play jokes by changing it's shape or rearranging all of the books. It gets lonely however, and sometimes a bit bored of playing jokes on me." He paused a moment and sighed "So as a result, it started throwing a tantrum, you could say.
Characters began to appear out of their books, appearing as children with no memory of who they were before. Perhaps they come out because they are seeking new stories, who knows, but now it's become a duty of mine to find them homes. The library likes to see more visitors, but we've had to keep hidden for so long that we hardly have any. Now I've been opening it more frequently so more wander in, but really, the doors only show itself to certain people. So... maybe you coming here is not a coincidence." He smiled at the thought.
"Meet them?" He echoed, suddenly becoming silent as he gave it some thought "They are rather timid I don't know if-"
"IIIIIINK!" A small voice echoed through the room and a young boy with a red top hat came running towards them along with a cat-eared boy "Come quick! There's this weird boy in the front and... and...."
"He's got these scary AMBER eyes." the cat-boy continued.
The other boy clad in red frowned and turned to him "But you've got amber eyes too."
"Not like his!"
"Settle down you two, who are you talking about?" Ink questioned, clearly puzzled by their outburst, but maybe...
The two boys looked over at the woman at that moment and seemed a bit startled as if they forgot she was there. The boy in red stepped forward, regardless and said in an overly loud voice "Thank you for the candy!" and the boy shouted an agreement before the two of them ran back down the aisle and towards the stairs.
Ink smiled apologetically "Sorry about that." He murmured "They get easily exciteable. Ah, but, before we get your books, we should go and see what they were talking about first. It might be something that will intrigue you, if my guesses are correct. Shall we?"

So the library itself was the source of it all. And it could change shape? Rearrange all of the books? How marvelous! At last, she'd found something really worth writing about! If she could just talk to some of the children, she was sure she could get a good, juicy story... maybe even in several parts! No one would believe it of course, they'd think her writing fiction... but a few would begin to wish it was true. Maybe that would make them into good candidates to visit the library, and the building wouldn't have to be so lonely.
It was a terrible feeling, that.
She was about to start rambling on about the idea to Ink when the two children interrupted. One of them had cat ears! The other had a top hat... "The Mad Hatter and the Chesire Cat." she whispered, clearly delighted, staring at them with some enthusiasm, hardly hearing what they were saying. "It makes sense that they'd hang out together, even if they'd no memory of their former lives... perhaps characters from the same books find solace in each other without even knowing why... Amber eyes? Oh, and you're welcome!" she called out, waving as the two disappeared.
"I would love to go and see what they were talking about, Mr. Ink!" she told him with a smile, holding out her arm as an invitation for him to take it. "Escort me?" she asked with a giggle, seeming to feel none of the urgency of the situation.
Oh, but inside... inside of her, something was starting to feel as if this event, whatever she was about to see, was why she'd been allowed into the library in the first place. Something felt so absolutely right about this chain of events that she couldn't help but feel that they had been ordained by something larger than herself. Destiny was calling her, perhaps. And what a peculiar thing, to discover one had a destiny at her age! Whatever it was though, she knew that this Amber Eyed child would change her life.
And to think, this had all seemed like chance a moment ago.

Ink as intrigued by the woman's strange enthusiasm in the idea of the library. It wasn't a bad thing but it was a rare reaction. Most of the time it was confusion, indifference and the like, he hardly ever met anyone so excited to encounter such a place like the library. He chuckled at how she held out her and he gratefully took it "Of course." he replied, beginning their walk to the front.
"They do find comfort in associating with each other, but only if they're from the same book. It gets lonesome for characters who are the only ones who've managed to leave from their own stories. Most of the time, though, the characters don't associate themselves with others as a whole, simply because they're too afraid or nervous. Mad Hatter and Chesire Cat have been the few of exceptions. They get along well because they're troublemakers." He explained, with a light laugh "They've got a great sense of exploration, even though it's a rather uncommon trait amongst book characters."
The two of them approached the front, some of the children ducking behind them as the drew closer. Once they arrived Ink raised an eyebrow. Apparently he guessed correctly after all, a character from the book he had with him earlier had come out and a very unexpected one, to say the least.
They're standing amongst the books was a dark-skinned boy with bright amber eyes. His eyes were half-lidded and he seemed rather indifferent but their was a peculiar aura about him.
"Oh my." He muttered under his breath as the boy turned his gaze towards them.

"Oh my." she whispered on seeing the child, her green eyes going terribly wide. She recognized him instantly, from both the sleepy eyed gaze and the outfit - it was one of his more outrageous ones in the book. All that was missing was the eye pain and the earing, and the look would be complete. He wasn't an adult, but he still held that alluring way about him, even if his eyes screamed at you to back off. "That's... that's Daemon Sadi." she whispered, sounding both nervous and thrilled at the same time.
Oh how she wanted to go to him, to introduce herself and offer another set of mints from her purse to the boy. But... finally, her enthusiasm had been overshadowed by another emotion - self preservation. If she approached him wrong, and he had retained any of his power and personality from the books, he would kill her without thinking twice about it. So she hung back, letting go of Ink's arm and licking her lips anxiously. "H-hello." she finally ventured, giving a curtsy.
Then she looked to Ink, asking him with her eyes what came next. Did he ever explain to the characters what had happened, or did he treat them as children? She simply wasn't sure, and especially with this child, she didn't want to do it wrong. When things went wrong with Daemon, they went very, very wrong. Briefly, she wondered what her psychic sent was like. Was it one that would repulse the boy, or one that would let him feel at ease? Maybe... maybe she'd been wrong, and this wasn't destiny. Maybe having a woman here when he first emerged hadn't been a good idea at all.

The boy didn't reply. He simply stared at the woman and took no action. He didn't seem wary or frightened but he gave her look that read that he had deemed her untrustworthy. Something seethed in him but he didn't know what. He could feel it.
Ink watched for a moment, he didn't take much action either. Indeed it was Daemon Sadi, one of the more powerful characters in the book. Whether or not it was a bad thing, he didn't know but since the woman was there... maybe it was all supposed to happen. After all, she was already connected to the book to begin with.
"He won't know who he is and his ability hasn't fully developed yet, so he shouldn't be dangerous." Ink said to her quietly as he approached her and the child, who in return took a step back.
He bent down and smiled, Daemon only watched carefully as the librarian introduced himself "There's no need to be afraid, we're friends. My name is Ink, I'm a bookkeeper."
The boy merely frowned but did not respond. Instead he looked over at the woman and eyed her curiously and then at her hand. "What's.. that?" He asked, as his eyes focused on the mints.
The children whispered and Ink let the events unfold. maybe something interesting was going to happen after all.

She blinked and looked at the mints, then blinked again. Huh. She must have gotten them out of her purse without realizing it... she did that sometimes, after all, her body moving independently from her mind. "These?" she asked, taking a few steps toward the boy, moving slowly, holding her hand out and waiting for him to come the rest of the way and take them. "It's... it's a kind of candy I guess you could say. Makes your mouth feel all tingly. Would you..." she cleared her throat, then offered him a smile. "Would you like to try one?"
Then, having decided that letting him come to her was indeed the best plan of action, she looked to Ink. She didn't quite ignore the boy, watching him instead from the corner of her eye, but he did only continue to hold half of her attention while she spoke with the librarian. "I... I had an idea earlier." she began, not speaking with quite the same enthusiasm as she had earlier. "I, well, I'm a writer, for a few different magazines and papers. Just small stuff, you understand, bits and pieces here and there, but... I think they'd let me do a piece on the library."
She paused, then smiled ruefully and shook her head. "I'd have to publish it as fiction, or as a dream I had, but... I'd still like to write it. Most people will read it and think it rubbish or an amusing fairy tale, but there might be a few who will feel ring in their souls. They might start looking for this place... and then you could have more visitors, and the library wouldn't be so lonely. Then it wouldn't play quite so many tricks, maybe. I hope it continues to let the children out though... I think it's wonderful. It seems like you have more than you can manage though. Do you ever... find homes for them?"

The boy approached cautiously, as if expecting the woman to lunge out and attack him, he of course knew he could very well protect himself. At least, maybe he could. He didn't know much about himself, not even his name, but he could feel that there was a power about himself. Also, it might not hurt to get close to those around him, even if it wasn't for a mutual relationship, they seemed to know about him. What was that name again.... Daemon... Daemon...
Ink looked over at her and smiled slightly "I wouldn't mind. The power of the word can sometimes be the strongest thing, it might help. I'll be sure to read it when it comes out." He replied enthusiastically "Since you came here once, this place should be easier for you to find again, no doubt. Comes as many times as you like if it helps with your writing."
The children neared, most stayed behind, too shy to approach, only the more daring ones came forth. Of course, those would be the Madd Hatter and Chesire Cat, who stuck themselves onto Ink's back as he leaned down.
Ink gestured to them as the actively whispered to each other "These two will be going to their new homes soon. this place is like an orphanage. They come from books and as their librarian, it's my duty to find them proper homes. Most of the children here will be picked up soon, and some already have been adopted and are here merely visiting. They can be troublesome, yes, but nothing pleases a person who's lived so long alone than to see others grow."

"Yay!" she enthused, not jumping up and down only because she was sure it would startle Daemon. And she really didn't want to do that. Some part of her began to wonder though. Maybe... maybe if he was raised differently this time around, perhaps the warmth he occasionally showed could become more a part of his personality. Wouldn't it be terrible if he went home with someone who hadn't read the books, who wouldn't understand? They might do things that, for reasons they wouldn't be able to recognize, would set the boy off. And... she didn't want him to have to spend the rest of his life in coldness. It would be a terrible thing.
Some part of her was coming to a decision, but to put it off a bit longer, she grinned at Ink. "I'll probably be a regular visitor then." she informed him. "Not only for my articles either. This place... seems to have more books than I've ever seen together before in my life. I do have a lot of work to do for my classes, and I think I'd like to do my research here, if you don't mind." There was another long pause, and then she looked to Daemon, considering.
"If... he doesn't mind, I'll take him home with me." she suddenly announced. "It'll mean finding a new apartment and such, but... well, we'll manage." she gave the boy a reassuring smile, then flicked her eyes back to Ink. "I'll take care of him." she promised quietly. "And I'll make sure that... that things are different for him this time around."
