Berry hunting. If there was one activity that could always be counted on to be fun, it was berry picking. There were so many to taste and try... and the chocolate mare spied a new bush that she had never tried before. Not bright red, thankfully - Alyssum had learned that the brighter berries could make her sick, and she hated that part of berry picking.
Alyssum plucked the berries from their stems, teeth crunching the deep red fruit. Tangy, but sweet, juice filled her mouth, and she gave a soft whinny of satisifaction. The blueberries were sweeter, and so where the blackberries, but these berries were different... that zing and zip left her wanting more. She nosed over the berry bush carefully, seeking out the ripest fruits by scent. Were there any left? This was a big bush... surely there had to be more!

There was a skip in her trot, for it was a pleasant day... Days like this that made her think something interesting might happen; after all, why waste a good day? At the thought, Grace giggled to herself and quickened her pace; she was sure that there were some yummy berries around the area.
Her eyes rolled up to look at the berries that someone had helped put in her hair - no matter how hungry she was, the small mare had never been tempted to eat those. They were special berries, and they'll stay there on her head, not in someone's stomach. She smiled fondly before continuing on her way, sniffing about for some berries to munch on. Then, she heard the sound of leaves rustling, and nearby, a bush moving. Feeling rather curious, the female trotted a few steps forward, peeking at the moving bush.
"Hello?"

Where had that voice come from?!
Alyssum immediatly snapped to attention, a bit of the maroon juice still dribbling down her chin. She turned her head to the right, but she saw no one. A glance to the left revealed nothing but the same colored berries, the green bushes that she had already seen.
Could... could the plants be talking to her? After meeting Laurelin, she was inclined to believe it was possible. So she peered down at the bushes, speaking slowly but clearly, "Hello? Are... are you talking to me? If you are... I'm sorry! I didn't know you could talk, or I wouldn't have eaten you!"

The Usdia mare jumped at the voice; although she had called out, she didn't really prepare herself for an answer. She frowned, leaning forward to sniff at the bush - it smelt of both ripe and unripe berries... And a hint of Soquili! Grace beamed, leaning further into the bush, trying to poke her head through it.
"Oof!" She gave a surprised cry as she lost her balance, crashing into the bush, squishing berries as she fell. The whole bush swayed, leave rustling as she picked herself up. Blinking into space for a second, she decided to walk through the bush instead of just poking her head through... After all, there was lesser chances of falling.
With that thought in mind, Grace quickly emerged from the bush covered in squished berries and leaves; the smile on her lips widened when she saw the Soquili who she presumed had replied. Trotting over, the Usdia chirped cheerfully, "Hello!"

The movement of the bushes seemed to confirm that the bushes were trying to communicate, and Alyssum almost repeated her sincere apologies to the plant she had munched berries from. However, the rustling increased, and a muffled 'oof!' made the chocolate mare take a few steps back, her eyes wide. What was going on?!
When the tiny cranberry being emerged, she couldn't stop a smile from gracing her face. It was so cute! Even smaller than a foal and completely covered with leaves and bits of berry - even her voice was cute, higher than must she had heard and perfectly fitting her appearance.
Slowly settling herself on the ground so that she didn't tower over the other, Alyssum replied, "Hello, Berry Pony. Are these your berries I've been munching on?"

"Berry pony?" Grace echoed, then looked down at herself. She does resemble a ripen berry, with her deep purple color, and now that she had crushed berries on her pelt, she must smell like one too! She flicked her tail to get some leaves off it before turning her attention back on the mare in front of her. Giving a giggle, the Usdia shook her head, "I'm not Berry pony! I'm Grace!"
At the mare's question, she blinked, feeling a little confused at the question. She then turned around the face the berry bush she had walked out from, and assumed that the chocolate mare was referring to it. In reply, she shook her head again, sending stray leaves falling from her mane, "Berries belong to everyone! They taste delicious, so it would be selfish to say that they belong to me."

"Grace?" Alyssum repeated, her smile only deepening. What a perfect name for the tiny pony! With her tiny hooves and light step, the smaller Soquili could fit the name easily, and the chocolate mare made no attempt to brand her with another nickname.
She gave a small nod at Grace's words as she replied, "That's what I think too! That plants and the forests are for everyone, but I've had someone ask me before if the forest was 'mine' so... I thought maybe the berries were different. I'm glad anyone can have them though... they really are yummy!"

"Yes, Grace! And what's your name?" She inquired with a curious look and a small smile.
The Usdia mare quickly nodded in agreement, giving a wide smile of her own, "Berries are the best fruit I've ever tasted! There are so many different kinds too, so its hard to get bored... Plus they're juicy and sweet, and makes for a great snack." Grace giggled, feeling happy about finding someone who shared her opinion on her favorite food item.
"Oh... But the forest don't belong to one person either, right?" Grace asked, giving another good shake to get more leaves out of her mane. "It belongs to everyone too, right?"

"Oh... oh, I'm sorry! I'm Alyssum," the chocolate mare replied quickly. She never remembered to give her name until it was asked, and she really needed to work on that. (Never mind the fact that her muzzle had been dripping berry juice when the tiny Soquili had appeared - not giving a name was a far worse insult than just appearing messy.)
"I love the black ones best, even if it's not the time for them to be out right now. The thorny bushes are hard to get through, but the berries are super sweet and delicious."
Alyssum had gone past smiling; she was beaming. Finally, someone who thought about the forest the same way she did! Who realized that the trees and other plants, all the animals and strange things that made up her forest home belonged to everyone and not to any one person in particular. "That's what I told the guy that asked me if the forest belonged to me. I thought it was kind of a weird question, you know?"
Seeing the trouble the berry-colored pony was having, the taller mare stretched her neck forward and began to pick some of the leaves from Grace's mane. "Do you want to go wash off somewhere? I find the berries make my mouth all sticky, so I can't imagine being covered with them would be much fun!"

"Alyssum is such a pretty name!" Grace replied happily, and nodded as the larger mare continued. "Well, I don't have a favorite berry..." She frowned, as if trying to force herself to choose a favorite; in the end, she just shook her head, "I like all of them equally! As long as they're ripe, I love them! The unripe ones just taste sour and... And yucky."
"It is a weird question," The Usdia readily agreed with a quick nod of her head; although she had applied the 'it doesn't belong to any one person' idea more on the berry bushes, it just felt right that the forests share this same idea.
Grace giggled when Alyssum helped her groom, and nodded again, "It feels... Weird. I like berries in my tummy, not all over my pelt. I think a good wash might be in order!"

The chocolate mare gave a horrified shudder, a high-pitched whinny leaving her throat, "Ugh, unripe berries are the worst! And they can make your tummy hurt for a long time after too!"
When the berry-colored pony agreed to a wash, Alyssum forced herself back up from her knees. She hated to tower over little Grace, but how else could she lead her on? "Follow me, then. I know a place not too far from here where you can wash off. It's a pretty gentle stream, so it shouldn't be hard to get in and out of."

The Usdia didn't hesitant to nod again in agreement, making a face like she had just eaten a whole lemon, "I had to go through that once... I'm much more careful nowadays!"
Grace shook herself again, giggling softly as a leaf dislodged itself from her mane and tickled her nose on its way down; it would be nice to get clean again, although she silently wondered how long it would last... After all, getting dirty can be rather enjoyable too. Looking up at Alyssum, she giggled at a thought, "I probably look and smell like a giant walking berry now!"

"Yeah, it's worth the extra time," Alyssum chimed in, taking the easiest route she knew how to get to the waterway. She avoided the steepest of the hills, though they did have to trot down some before the gurgling sound of moving water could be heard.
At her tiny companion's words, the dark mare added her own laugh in, feeling incredibly light-hearted as she finally reached the edge of the stream, "You do! But, pretty soon, you'll be nice and clean again."

Grace giggled, trotting slightly faster as the sound of running water became louder and louder; her shorter legs meant that she had to walk twice the number of steps to catch up with Alyssum, but she barely felt tired as she followed after the mare... Must be the energy the berries were giving her, she thought to herself.
"Not sure how long that will last though," The Usdia commented as she jumped into the stream. Taking in a deep breath, she ducked under the water and shook herself to loosen the leaves stuck in her hair as well as to get the sticky berries off her pelt. After a few seconds, she emerged from under the surface and exhaled.
"Are there still leaves and twigs in my hair?" She asked, shaking her head to get her bangs off her eyes.

When the cranberry Usdia submerged herself, it took all of Alyssum's restraint to keep her from jumping in after her. The water wasn't that deep, being below the taller mare's knees, but she couldn't help an instinctual fear of drowning surfacing as she watched over the spot where Grace had disappeared.
Relief made her more light-hearted as the smaller mare surfaced again, and in response to her question, the dappled mare entered the water for a closer inspection, beginning at the back as she circled around Grace. Tail clean, coat clean... purple eyes focused behind one of her companion's ears, as she replied, "There's still a few berries and leaves in your mane. They're not squished or anything, though, so it doesn't look like they made a mess. You want me to pull them out for you?"
