A friend as well as I drew up a plan for this type of weapon on the inside of the hilt it has gears allowing it to spin the blade and causing it to be a drill ^.^

Interesting design... wouldn't it need more of a pointed tip though if its a drill? Sorry; being nit-picky. ^__^;;;

Interesante indeed. It seems like it should have a different shape. I imagine it being weird when it spins, just me though.

Wouldn't work as a drill, but it would work as a vibrating device.

Keith Valken Lionheart Wouldn't work as a drill, but it would work as a vibrating device. Oh lawd, my mind just jumped to something that a katana should never be used for. gonk

perv! haha
looks cool though, how about a drill within the handle though? press a button to have it spring out from the hilt and spin. it wouldnt be a big drill, as you would need to enlarge the hilt to enlarge the drill, but it's an idea...
what about Cog shaped Shurikan? and piston-loaded Kai or Sai...
hmm, you may have inspired me to put some ninja gear into my Summer project (i have to fill a hardback a4 sketchbook cover-to-cover with ideas for a game to develop over the next year at college)

Oh lawd, my mind just jumped to something that a katana should never be used for. gonk A drill? I'm sorry, but a katana is a cutting sword, not a stabbing sword. Its use as a drill would be pointless - and would easily break the blade. A vibrating sword would be okay (excluding the perviness quoted above xp ) because it would probably allow to cut a bit better, like a vibrating carving knife some use at Thanksgiving.

It's awesome. Except, I feel the blade should be a little teensy bit lighter in color. I would buy it though. : D

It looks neat, but isn't the katana also a slicing weapon? The spinning drill might enhance its stabbing ability, but the slicing ability would be completely gone. It does look really cool, though.

Yeah, a spinning mechanism would make it useless as a katana.
If you want a spinning blade, first thing is the blade must be absolutely straight. If you spin a curved blade, it will wobble out of your hands, and best case scenario make you look like a complete idiot. Worst case scenario, you'd sever something near and dear to you. Like your jugular or carotid.
However, a foil or épée with a screw tip would be wicked. A flywheel in the hilt would keep up the rpms as you hand crank them with a compression grip, and you could even run a thin axle up through the blade.

I like the vibro-blade idea. very knights of the old republic. keep the gear for a makeshift tsuba and you can always mount a small flinlock on it somewhere if your keen on the whole gunblade thing.
