rite on! I've been playing flute for six years and piccolo for a year. Any questions you have about either, I can try to answer or I can ask my section leader who has at least 10 years of playing experience. Let me know! smile

I just started playing in the key of A in my lessons, and I just can't get the hang of it. Any suggestions?

What you do is trill your left ring finger. Pretty basic. If you're talking a3 and g3, I'll have to get back to you.
Also, I've been playing flute for 6 years and piccolo for one. I'll be happy to answer any questions, but I have one for anybody willing to help. Do you guys have any methods for cleaning sticky pads? What I was taught is to use a dollar bill, which has worked in the past, but now for some reason it's not working on just one key. I think I need to get my pads replaced, but if anyone has a way that WON'T cost me a ton of money plus having to use my old, cheap flute, it would be much appreciated.
Yes, I'm a cheapskate. I know.

Flutes are awesome! I have been playing for almost 2 years now. My band for school is getting ready for our Christmas concert. We are playing Sleigh Ride (which is in cut time and it is really confusing!) Jingle Bell Rock, Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, and this song called Christmas Feast. They are very complicated. My director says that the band that I am in was the best "6th grade" band she has ever had. Now that we are in 7th grade, she has given us harder sheet music knowing that we can play it. If you have any advice for cut time music, such as how to make it sound better, etc. I would be happy to learn!

Ask your band teacher if they have any replacement pads. I am a flute player but I also play bassoon, and with my new bassoon, I found that the pad for the whisper key was mangled (it looked like the underside of a mushroom - no joke!) so I talked to my band teacher about it so that I wouldn't get in trouble when I returned it at the end of the year. He was like, "okay we'll look through the replacement pads that we have to see if any fit" lol.

My suggestion is to practice at home. Play it in four-four, since cut time it pretty much two-two. Learn the notes so that you are confident in playing them and then gradually speed up the tempo. Think of it instead of "one two three four" "one and two and-" for the "quarter notes". Sorry, I know I'm not really that good at explaining, but I hoped that it helped. I've been playing flute for over.... I think four years now...? lol, but I consider myself as 'musical' since I'm an overachiever. lol.
