Chapter One - Perfect Weapon Against the dangers of plague he conceived the idea of night guards and watchmen. The disease worsens with the treatment, and the remedy is worse than the disease. It is said that for a sick man, there is hope as long as there is life. A sick man dreams to either conquer or die. The die is cast. He takes the wolf by the ears, and flies by his own wings. He bid them look at the sky and turn your eyes to the stars. Seize the day and trust as liltte as possible in tomorrow, for there is no easy way to reach the stars.
~Newbury, Berkshire: Military Outpost~
Three men conversed in the mess hall of their quarters, their meals growing cold as they were lost in their own humor. They were dressed in dark garments, and each bore an identical creat which symbolized their position in their unit. These particular men bore the insignia of two swords clashing with one another. It was the symbol of their infantry. After some time remenising over past events, they become more serious about their next topic of discussion."I told you before, leave him be." One of the veterans demanded. "I just don’t understand why everyone just leaves him alone." Said another. "He acts like he’s better than us, carrying himself like he’s…like he’s so…it makes me sick." "You just don’t understand do you?" The veteran said. His irritation becoming more apparent in his speech. "He is one of the coven's best and has earned the respect he is given. If he asks to be left alone, then you WILL comply." "Well if he wants my respect, he’ll have to do more than his job to get it." Countered another soldier. "Who are you guys talking about?" One of the recruits asked. "You’re probably better of not knowing kid." The veteran replied. The soldier points across the compartment to a man sitting by himself in the corner. His arms were crossed, and his head hung low. His hair was dark and his bangs covered his face at the moment. He did not seem to enjoy the company of others, but at a closer glance it could be seen that several chains where present around his body. He seemed to be in a medatative state as he seemed oblivious to all that was happenning around him. The roars of men were constant in the air as the battle ensued. The sky was dark, and lit with the flames wrought by their siege against the enemy.
As the other soldiers avoided him, there was one that approached him, his garments bore a different crest than the majority of the others. He looked up at the man as he kneeled before him. The chains on his body now revealing a set of complex shackles which bound both his hands and his feet to each other, which made it very difficult to move, even in the walls of this outpost. This man had begun to fiddle with the shackles briefly, before they fell to he ground with a loud clank of metal. The rattle of the chains catching the attention of the other soldiers in the compartment. As his arms were freed, the soldier brushed his hair out of his face, and rested a hand on the side of his face. He smiled lightly at him, before he stood from his position. He drew a rather gruesome dagger from the holster on his side. As he presented it to this soldier, the smile he bore suddenly left his face."My son...it is time."

~(Tentative entrance.)~
The night had seemed endless as the harsh flicker of the war born inferno raged against the horizon. Though in contrast to the grim work that was being done mere miles away the manor was in a state of calm. But it had always been commonplace for the house to be vacant in the late night hours. Whether of pure decent or created by a blood born; those of the coven took advantage of the night’s protection to have their way with the world. Though while the others reveled in the promise of victory, one remained behind.
In the dark vaulted rooms of the library, a woman stood facing an enormous slightly arced window that dominated the room, allowing the subtle rays of moonlight to bleed into the chamber.
“Pity you didn’t come out tonight Saidra, Edward thought you would have come along at least to celebrate a bit.” Said a voice from the slightly parted doors opposite the window. It was a woman, whose slurred tone was more than enough to suggest she had been drinking. The dark haired at the window flinched slightly, her grey eyes darkening at the mention of the name Saidra. A name that was faintly unfamiliar and distasteful….that is before she recalled the current identity she was occupying while at the estate. Even among her own kin, the council commanded that her true name and duty be kept hidden. A seclusion that she often welcomed, preferring to hide behind such well embroidered lies, allowing her to avoid the bland social lives that the likes of this other woman preferred.
“We have yet to win this war Nicollet…nor this battle. Edward is a fool to believe that the royalists will simply turn and run when he sends no more than a few dogs to contend with Charles. ” she replied as she closed the tome in her had with a decisive snap.
“You are taking this far too seriously, really I think you are just distraught that the council sent a squabbling bunch of lycans to do what you would much rather be doing, rather than standing here with a bit of light reading.” Nicollet replied with a slight hiccup and a laugh, her hands falling to the wrinkled fabric of her once extravagant dress.
When the woman did not reply she turned to leave. “You won’t have much fun staring out that window all night…..I’m going back out…You want to come along? ” she asked tentatively.
“No.”
At the door closed with a muffled click the woman moved away from the window and dropped into a nearby chair, the book hanging loosely from her hand before she allowed it to fall to the ground. Slowly she brought her hand to her head in exhaustion. She had not fed in over a week, in all honestly she was disgusted on her race’s dependence on human life as well as by the very act of draining that crimson life from their weak mortal forms. Hunting had become far too easy for her anyway. Vampires had always been granted the innate ability to alter the perceptions of other beings, but over the centuries she had finally mastered the art to a deadly edge; to the point that human’s were utterly helpless when necessity forced her to feed. The thought of venturing out into the foul little gathering in the streets was nearly enough to convince her to go another day without venturing out. But she would not give the council another reason to keep her chained here at the manor since she was in a weakened state. She longed escape this place and return to her duties far from the grounds of the household. Standing, her raven’s wing hair fell about her shoulders before she reached back with pale hands to pin it back once more at the base of her neck. Soon after she retrieved a thick leather coat made of a dark material that hung nearly the entire length of her narrow frame, and flung it on. Already her displeasure of having to risk a trip into the celebrating below, summoning up a twinge of anger. No doubt half the Niveus would been out in the streets along with the coven’s council. No one would really seek a well founded conversation with Saidra since she simply did not exist…but Andrea…a number of the council had been wanting a word with her ever since the incident in southern Venice…..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The streets were a flurry with activity as soldiers darted from outside the small village that surrounded the manor to the battalions moving towards the battle in the distance. As she crossed the street with her gaze low a dozen or so men chained at the wrists were being escorted out of the village. They were lycans, better known by the peasants as werewolves, imprisoned by the coven to fight Parliament’s battles with no cost to their own forces. Their eyes were dim as they shuffled by, most of them already broken by their imprisonment in the camps that dominated the lands behind the manor. She disliked the manner in which her kind treated the prisoners, but neither did she have any love for the race of wolves.
It was easy enough to find a suitable human. Unlike her more arrogant brethren who chose to claim any mortal they fancied, she preferred to prey upon those unnoticed by their pitiful society. In a dank ally behind the local in, she found such a candidate buried half asleep in the foul shadows that clung to the walls. He lay still as she approached, her mind already wrapping around his own, crippling it, suffocating it…until it collapsed into a calm stupor. She ignored the foul scent that clung to him as she easily lifted him from the ground with a single slender arm, narrow fangs slipping into view as she caught him by the neck with the grace of the greatest of predators. The first few seconds were the most rewarding as momentarily all one felt was the precious life energy bleeding into your own, sharply contrasting with the hollowness that soon brought about the thirst. But as moments passed, the need subsided and she withdrew, letting the pale corpse collapse to the ground. Andrea had suspected she would be able to slip back into the house unnoticed but luck was not with her tonight.
“It’s not often we get to see you outside the manor Saidra…is it?” A man’s voice uttered with a dark but almost entertained tone. “There is a reason God graced our people with such longevity. Sad that you waste it so”
Andrea remained with her dark fog hued eyes focused towards the rough hewn bricks that the alley was composed of, her demeanor growing cold and withdrawn as she chose to speek.
“I suspected you would still be out enjoying your victory…” she replied with subtle lines of venom running through her tone. Turning her head slightly to glance back, she easily caught sight of Edward garbed in his finest. His dark closely trimmed hair and light amber eyes mimicking those of his father, Lord Gareth who sat at the head of the Niveus high council. Edward was a lesser son of greater sires, who believed that the subtle power of politics could defeat any man. Andrea was clear in her views that she did not agree with his beliefs on any level. Though she despised him down to her very core, he was in a place of power, and for the moment a superior.
“You never had any respect for my work, a pity really.” He said with mock despair.
“Do not flatter yourself.” Shot back Andrea as she fully turned to face him, her arms stiffly crossing over her dark overcoat. A slender sword hilt peeking past the trim, though not by accident.
He smirked as he drew closer. “And you give yourself to much credit; your duty will never be nothing more than a hired anarchist, I really don’t see how you acquired the taste for it. Rumors say that even when you hold them blind and helpless to their fate…you let them feel their death so that their last moments are that of unbound panic and horror.”
“Gossip is hardly a proper witness to anything councilman.” She offered in retort. Her voice chill and dripping with disinterest, making it obvious that she did not wish to be there. “Quite right.” He answered, finally stopping within arm’s reach, a strange smirk crossing his features. “Though it proved most accurate with your latest assignment….two bodies left out in public view…” He tsked, floundering with sarcasm. “The council can not afford to keep everything from the humans, even their rudimentary media has cooked up a report that does not stray so far from the truth. Calling you a murderer is hardly a lie, even if we are in a state of war. You are loosing your touch I’m afraid.” Edward murmured as he leaned in close, his voice dropping to a whisper.
“In time the council will no longer need the likes of your kind, the war is coming to an end…..Though perhaps I can still find a use for you.”
No sooner had the words left his mouth, had Edward found himself pinned against the dull brick exterior with a gleaming curved blade leveled at his neck, a grin dancing across his face. Andrea stood inches from him with her sword threatening to end the councilman there on the spot. Her face was emotionless and etched in stone.
“Give me a reason to put your case before the council Shadow…Kill me.” He said lowly, the excitement evident on his face. Edward became silent as the tip of the sword pressed just deeply enough to draw blood. For a moment they both stood gazing at each other before Andrea’s silver hued eyes closed briefly and she backed away, flicking the blood to the ground before sheathing the weapon. “Next time, you will lose more than blood.” Spoke Andrea, her voice hanging with every tone of formality she could muster, her gaze unwavering.
Smirking with glee Edward bowed briefly to her as if the conversation had never taken place and immediately disappeared back into the roar of the celebration, leaving Andrea hanging in the wake of her actions. She knew he would not let her off so easily for this. She could only hope he would not be so childish as to involve the whole of the council in their ongoing quarrel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The earthen scent of the manor stables was a welcome comfort to Andrea as she considered her other options for avoiding Edward that night. She had allowed her anger to get the best of her and now it could be another suspension. Even another few days of being forced to remain at the house was torture.
The act of killing brought her no real pleasure, even if she was bettering the standing of the coven in doing so. It was that freedom she gained when outside these walls, traveling vast landscapes while honing her craft in the fighting arts and mind-casting, that dictated all motive in her life.
She was drawn from these thoughts as a dark storm colored stallion at the back of the stables nickered impatiently in his stall. “I imagine they have kept you prisoner as well Kyugesu.*” She muttered as she went to retrieve the horse’s tack from behind the stable boy who had fallen asleep near the entrance. The two exited the long building in near silence. She had found that animal in southern Asia where it had been bred for both speed and endurance. A warhorse that seemed out of place among the smaller coach horses that it had been housed among. (*Kyugesu, translates to cursed prosecutor, Japanese origin) Kyugesu’s own need to escape the estate grounds became evident as he moved from a swift canter into a gallop without Andrea singling him to do so. It was not until the towering stone structure of the house and the glow of the village had long since given way to the dark and starlight that the horse slowed to a steady trot.
The gentle moonlight illuminated the low hung fog that clung to the moors, making it seem like they were treading atop mere cloud. For some time Andrea rode in silence letting the beast choose his way. Slowly she let her mind slip out of its bounds and stretch outwards, granting her an awareness unlike any other. Her mind casting was by far her greatest strength. While other vampires used it a nothing more than a simple tool for capturing prey, she worked for centuries to make her gift far more dangerous than the sharpest of blades. She could sense every living thing within many leagues, down to the smallest insect; they all were displayed before her as pinpoints of cognition that she could manipulate if she chose. But instead she allowed her eyes to close, and simply observed the unseen tide of life and death of the landscape. One could but stand in awe of the cycle that ruled all living things. She could never believe in a force of fate that dictated how lives were led. But something was out there that formulated the extent a life could reach. It fascinated her in all truth. She; named by the ruling council as Shadow was one of the greatest weapons of the Niveus coven. A warrior and manipulator of minds who could grant death to any that her master’s chose. It was a dizzying sort of authority that had once threatened to overwhelm her when she was much younger; Believing that she had the power to deal out death and judgment. But after being able to see the cycle of death with her own eyes, she had realized how insignificant she was. For in the end it was the coven that decided who she would strike down…and centuries from now if not sooner, death would come for her as well.
In the dim gloom of the night she continued to remain in her trance like state, far from the concerns of the coven and their god forsaken council. Freedom was not hers to relish when she choose…it came and went like a fleeting wind. She was nothing more than a slave to them; A prisoner, even out here in the distant moorlands.
Hours passed in darkness, the only sound was Kyugesu’s hooves softly treading the ground at the night neared its peak, the full moon glaring down at them.

Inside the outpost, the warrior has finished dawning his equipment as a line of shackled prisoners were dragged into the tent. He had just finished tightening his bandana when he was approached by a group of men from the rear. He was still seated for the moment when their shadows blocked out the light and became one with his own. They addressed him in a spiteful tone. His face was cold as he glanced back at them with narrowed eyes. His calm nature hid his discontent for this particular breed of man. As he stood, his dark garb revealed an unusual insignia upon his back, before he turned to face them.
He was slightly larger than they were, standing six foot two inches. His hair was a dark brown, and his skin was tan, sugesting that he may have been of middle eastern origins. His dagger was a a rare artifact, that was passed down from father to son for generations. Its metals had never fallen into foreign hands. Its sheathe was beautifully decorated. It was a dominant black and possessed golden tribal patters throughout the length of the sheathe. On his garments, his arms were exposed revealing a set of tribal tattoos throughout both of his arms. The head band on his head was a steel along his brow, and bore the same insignia that was seen in his back. As he looked down at the group, he could see their intents as plain as the light in the tent.
"What do you want?" He asked them irritantly.
"Listen here, slave. We don't care who sent you here or how good you are...Right now you work for us." One of them began to shout. "That means that attitude of yours will have to go. You will address me as Sir, and you will bow to my every whim. Do you unsterstand prisoner?"
"I bow to no man." He said as he pushed passed them.
"Hey! Where do you think you're going?" Another one shouted. "We're talking to you!"
The man continued on his path as he exited the tent. He seemed to be walking toward the exit to the camp toward the front lines of the war. The clouds were settled in above the outpost as he looked toward the sky. His direction had changed, as he found himself a desolate spot in the camp where he could relax...or so he thought. As he came to a halt, he noticed several individuals gatherring behind him. The same men had followed him to this very spot, and blocked the entrance, to the area. As he turned to face them once again, he noticed that they had drawn their weapons. His amber hued eyes holding more discontent for them than before, but as usual his calmness hid his discontent.
"What is this really about?" He said.
"They say you're some kind of super soldier." One of them said. "They treat you like a king and we don't like it."
"He doesn't look so tough." Another one replied. "His tattoos just scare everyone."
"Yeah. I mean, they said that you killed a hundred men by yourself. I mean, no one is that good." Another suggested.
"One hundred twenty seven to be exact." He replied. "One hundred twenty eight if you count their commander...he died of an infection...three days later."
"See there he is again, acting like he's better than us!" The first one shouted.
"Well if you can kill a hndred soldiers, we shouldn't be a problem for you right?" Another suggested.
"Seven on one?" The man said. "Perhaps you should invite the enemy to aid you. Then you may have a chance at survival."
"You make me sick." The fourth man said. "I say we gut him here, and hide the body until the battle is over."
"Yeah." The first replied. "We'll say their 'super soldier' died in battle."
"I will warn you human." He said, his voice growing colder as he spoke. "If you decided to attack me, you will discover the meaning of pain. The ferryman will not await your arrival to grant you passage to the underworld, for you will no longer exist."
"What the hell did he just say?" The Sixth shouted.
"Urrg. Nevermind that. Kill him. I'll work out the details later."
With that be seven men all charged at the man. He made no suddenly movements, as he did not seem threatened by them in the slightest. When they reached striking distance, the soldier's bodies all halted in their tracks as the man's body desintigrated into a black cloud of dust as it caught the wind. They all looked around in confusion as the dust swirled around them a bit before disolving into the air. It was then that a voice came from their rear.
The men turned around and to their surprise, the man they attacked could be seen walking away from them. He seemed to be avoiding them but they could not understand how he had gotten passed them...let alone how he disappeared like he did. They passed it off as nothing, however, when they attempted to pursue him, they found themselves crying out in both pain and horror.
Their bodies had begun to follow the same pattern as the man they attacked. Their skin had begun to harden, and their limbs fell to the ground as if they were composed completely of sand. Their blood stainded the ground, briefly as it followed the same pattern. Their screams only lasted a a few moments before the last of them were silenced...permanently. As he exitted the camp, he was addressed by an individual's clapping. When he turned around, he found another man standing against the wall. His garments were similar to his own, only they bore a different insignia than the one he bore on his brow.
As he spoke, an unusual smirk crept across his face. He was equipped similarly to him only that his blades were that of a twin set of katanas.
"What do you want Kayn?" He said even more irritatingly.
"Now now. Is that anyway to address your big brother, Kulayl?" He replied in a joking manner.
"You are hardly any brother to me, Kayn." Kulayl countered.
"A pity you feel that way, brother." Kayn replied. "I have no idea why father wants to keep tainted blood so close to us, but it is his desicion and I will admit, you do have your uses."
"What was that?" Kulayl asked as he grew more irritated.
"I saw what you did to those men back there." He said. "You have so much power at your disposal, yet you waste it on these peons...and even worse...your own kind. You haven't ascended yet, but once you do, you will have more power than you will know what to do with. What will you do then? You can't hide it forever."
"I will manage, just as I always do." He said. "Until then, leave me be. I've nothing more to discuss with you."
"The eclipse is coming Kulayl." Kayn informed him. "The time will come for you to choose sides. I hope that for your sake, you make the right decision."
