Yanagi crouched low between a tree and a big, leafy bush. In the dim light of dawn, his bark and moss like body blended well with the trunk of the tree, while his leafy main and tail seems almost an extension of the bush.
Nagi was a loner. He had tried to join herds a number of times in his youth, but between his odd appearance, almost more flora than fauna, and his peculiar diet he had been unable to find acceptance. Now he traveled alone, but for the sometimes companionship of a large salamander-like creature he called Frill.
Frill had been the first creature Nagi saw when he hatched, had raised him as his own, and it had been a long time before Nagi ever encountered one of his own kind. Because of this, his language skills were not always very good, though he worked hard to improve them, so late in life.
He was however, an excellent hunter. Frill, a carnivore himself, had raised Nagi in the same manner. When he had first met another Kirin, and seen them eating mainly plants, he had tried to emulate them, with little success. He was nearly an adult by this time, and his digestive system was not used to the roughage, causing horrible cramps. Also, due to his plant-like form, it felt a bit too close to cannibalism for his comfort. And it just plain tasted bad.
Nagi mentally shook himself from his musings as he heard a sound in the forest, a ways away still but coming closer.

Sunil had spotted a butterfly and gone chasing after it. She wasn't entirely sure where she was, but then again, she never really was. She didn't really have any friends and really hadn't found a herd for herself, so he wandered by herself, not fully maturing since she had noone to emulate. She tended to play with bugs like a young foal, as she was doing now. She was running full after the butterfly, jumping ever few steps like a gazelle.
Laughing, she took a flying leap after the butterfly which had stopped to hover in front of a strange looking tree, unfortunately she misjudged its movements and caught the butterfly in her open mouth. Upon landing she spit it out quickly, looking cross-eyed down her nose with her tongue hanging out, she looked at the tree the butterfly had stopped in front of, it had a strangely familiar shaped protrusion. She had the strange feeling she should have been keeping an eye on where she was going.

Yanagi was prepared for something coming towards him. He was prepared for it to be something big. What he was not prepared for was for a full-grown mare to leap practically on top of him in pursuit of a butterfly. And then to make such a truly odd face when she caught it. After all, why chase something if you didn't intend to eat it? Even a butterfly had some nutritional value, though it seemed like an awful lot of effort for so little reward to him.
Blinking, he let out a snort. Then a small chuckle. In moments, he was on the ground, laughing too hard to hold himself up. The situation was just far too ridiculous.

Sunil jumped at the noise, ready to flee if necessary, she knew there were predators, but when she saw the odd looking stallion, she was intrigued and annoyed at the same time. She snorted at him "Whats so funny?"

Nagi gasped for breath, trying to control his laughter. One look at the mare's serious expression caused him to lose the fight, falling back into a laughing fit. He was certainly not giggling. "You... 'utterfly... looked..." He covered his face with a foreleg, eyes squeezed shut and leaking tears as he continued trying to stop laughing. His sides were starting to ache.

Sunil was getting mad at this stupid stallion who was obviously laughing at her. She picked up a rock and threw it at him "Stop laughing at me!"

Nagi yelped in surprise when the rock hit him. "Trying." he huffed out, still short on breath. "Was funny." He wobbled to his feet, legs unsteady and sides aching, sides heaving a bit as he tried to draw air into his starved lungs.

His gasping only made her angrier "What exactly is that funny?" she spat the question at him, grabbing another rock

Nagi felt bad for having hurt her pride so, but who wouldn't have laughed? He hoped he could explain it to her so she wouldn't be too upset with him. She would probably want nothing to do with him, like all the others, but that didn't mean he couldn't try. "I waiting. Hear something. Ready to pounce food. Then not-food pounce me. Eat 'utterfly, spit out. Taste bad? Funny face. Maybe not see me. Try not to laugh, can't help. Sorry." He looked down, embarrassed by the halting inadequacy of possibly the longest speech he had ever made.

Sunil had a hard time understanding him, but what she could understand was that he thought her catching the butterfly was funny, and once she thought about it, it was kind of funny. She smiled at him "I suppose it was kind of funny, I was just trying to play with it"

"Yes." he nodded, glad he seemed to have gotten his message across. Speaking still came with great difficulty for him, since he hadn't even been exposed to it until much later in life.
He danced in place a little nervously. "Yanagi. 'Utterfly lady is?"

She smiled at him, carefully going over what he said to work out what it meant "Yanagi? I'm Sunil"

"Hello Su-nil." He pronounced it slowly and carefully, not wanting to mess it up and risk angering her again. "'Utterfly taste good?" he asked, genuinely curious. It might not have much substance, but it might work as a tasty treat. Then again, even if they tasted good, they probably weren't worth the effort to catch.

Sunil smiled "No, not really, thats why I spit it out. I'm more interested in the flavor of vegitation than bugs though. What about you? Ever tried a butterfly?"

Nagi shook his head. "No, small. No meat. Veti... veger... plants? Eew. Bitter. Meat better." he nodded emphatically. Why would anyone eat those nasty plants when there was something as tasty as meat available?
