Darsh was a little startled to find someone had been listening to him. But it hardly brought on a sudden rush of humility. And when he turned his head to see the blond, winged girl from the shelter he grinned broadly, puffing out his chest just a little.

"Of course I remember you! Casia, right?" He saluted her with his harmonica. "You liked it?" Of course she liked it. He was already pretty good at playing. But you know... confirmation was always a good thing. And Darsh was glad to have someone to talk to since everyone else had run off. It wasn't easy being the biggest brother and nobody knew his pain and loneliness.

Casia saluted back. "S'me." she announced, pleased he had remembered. As for his name, the siren was terrible with things like that, and it was even worse that she had been referring to him as 'The Blue Meanie' in her head. Despite valiant efforts, she drew repeated blanks.

"Yeah, I liked it!" she replied, pushing the issue of his anonymity aside for a moment. "Bummer you don't have a bigger audience." Looking around the empty stall, she picked up some pottery. "Looks like you had one though, or did you make all this choice swag yourself?" As usual, the kid's company was absent and she felt briefly sorry for him. She had left Jane of her own volition, but if he was stuck here, he was probably babysitting the stall against his will. Casia bit her lip, looking at the tempting booths nearby, all the groovy things to get distracted by, and then back to the boy sitting alone with the clayware and sculptures. She could go off and have fun, or she could catch up with the world's only musical Blue Meanie.

She seemed to reach a decision after a moment. Gesturing to the booth, she asked "Can I come in the shade?" Browsing forgotten, the siren opted to hang around, caught by pity and the harmonies of Darsh's need for somebody to love.

"Come on in." Darsh scooted over on the wooden bench, making enough room for both Casia and her wings. "I didn't make this stuff." He added in response to her earlier question. "My aunt Emma did. She's off looking for Hayden, and Dad took Warren somewhere." He made a face. "Brothers suck." He added with a little sigh. "Maybe when they come back I can look around. Then again... We're here almost every week. And now I've got this" he tapped the harmonica fondly "I don't really mind so much."

Lifting the instrument to his mouth, he blew the first few notes of Dear Prudence, though he gave them a particularly wistful twist.

Casia collapsed unceremoniously onto the bench, but not so unceremoniously that she didn't straighten out the hem of her dress first so it wasn't indecent. "Your dad's here?" she asked nonchalantly. What she didn't ask was 'So he's not off locking some poor spaz in a cage or, I don't know, kicking puppies or something?' but these questions werent far from her mind. "Who're Hayden and Warren? Cousins?" Her questions were ceaseless, she wanted to know what life was like on the Meanie side of the street, and this was a golden opportunity. "Music," she declared finally, "Makes everything more tolerable." Strange boys, long school days, awkward waltzes, music was the siren's cure for most unpleasant situations.

Her eyes widened as she recognized the Beatles song, and she leaned back on the bench, closing her eyes so the tune could wrap her up. "Dear Prudence," she chimed in, "Won't you come out to play?" The harmonica and her voice blended well, creating the silver threads of song that lit up her memory and her life, so the siren sang a little louder, letting the tune pull her away. "Dear Prudence, meet the brand new day! The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful, and so are you..." She enjoyed the moment, letting herself harmonize with him lazily in the sunlit farmer's market.

He was tempted to stop playing and explain that Warren and Hayden were his brothers. Not only that, but between the two of them they'd destroyed nearly all of the barn upon arrival. PLUS they were annoying. Kind of. Warren was a brat and Hayden... it was hard not to fall into the trap of loving the little lolcat. So Darsh tended to make Hayden his scapegoat instead. Mostly, their presence was okay except that they got more attention than he did. Warren because he was just a baby and Hayden because you couldn't take your eyes off of him for two seconds without disaster striking.

He was tempted to tell Casia all of this, except then she started singing. His eyes crinkled into a smile as he continued to work the mouth harp, drawing out notes and adding little trills here and there, as if adding glitter and sparkle to Casia's already lovely voice. Dear Prudence, open up your eyes... Dear Prudence see the sunny skies...

A couple of people paused by the booth, standing to listen idly at the the impromptu duet.

Prudence wasn't the only one who should have opened up her eyes. As people began to listen, the siren's eyes remained closed, and thus she was blissfully unaware that they were drawing attention. Instead, she kept on singing, flapping her wings delightedly as the melody got more complex. Live music! She knew people who played instruments, but she couldn't remember singing along, and it felt wonderful to hear the song twist and change to suit her singing, to make music that wasn't just her singing the words alone or to a record player.

"The wind is low, the birds will sing,
That you are part of everything.
Dear Prudence, won't you open up your eyes
?"

This was the point when Casia opened up her eyes at last, heading into the chorus of "Look around, round round-" but breaking off as she saw people gathering. Jolting, she shook her head. It was the pottery they were looking at, and she didn't want the song to end, so she picked up where she left off. "Look around, round, round, round..."

Darsh was a confident kid. He did well with audiences - in fact, he downright loved the attention. He wasn't paying much attention to the small crowd that was growing bigger, though. He was enjoying himself far too much.

Rather than feel threatened by Casia's musical talent, Darsh felt that it complimented his own and therefore made the whole thing even better. It could have been the unwitting vocal seduction of the Siren, but more likely it was just the sheer pleasure that came from two people joining together in harmony. He felt generous where Casia was concerned.

When it came to the part where she began singing "look around" Darsh set down the harmonica and sang it with her. He had the sweet, clear voice of a young boy and it blended nicely with hers. He grinned an impish grin of pure delight. This was fun!

Casia began to look more and more hesitant as the crowd got bigger and milled about longer than it usually took to look at pottery. Singing to one person was one thing, and she'd lap up the attention from something like that, but a whole bunch of strangers was a completely different matter. Cheeks flushing red, she sped up the tempo, hoping to finish up the song soon.

"Dear Prudence, let me see you smile,
Dear Prudence, like a little child.
The clouds will be a daisy chain,
So let me see you smile again,
Dear Prudence, won't you let me see you smile?
"

At least the Blue Meanie felt at home, he was chiming in and beaming. He helped put off the pressure, singing with someone in a crowd was better than singing alone. She tried not to look, closing her eyes again, but they opened of their own volition. She didn't want to close her eyes in the middle of a group of strangers, not at all! However, she was reluctant to look worried, and tried to compose herself, flashing a weak smile at the people around them in an effort to mimic Darsh. She was nervous, but looking like she was nervous was even more embarrassing than being nervous.

Darsh had returned to his harmonica, and he could see that Casia was getting fidgety and upping the tempo but he didn't understand why. Stage fright and nerves were simply not things that Darsh had any comprehension of whatsoever. But he obligingly played faster to keep up with her. Even though she was a little twitchy, they still sounded great!

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

As they finished the song, Darsh blowing triumphant, clarion notes on the harmonica, the small crowd burst into applause and started wandering away. Most of them. Some of the people sort of hung around as if they were waiting for more. The blue boy gave them a little seated bow and turned his sparkling eyes towards Casia.

"That was great!" was the enthusiastic decision.

Casia felt a wave of relief as the song ended and they left, relief tinged with disappointment. Singing a duet had made her feel so alive, something the unchanging record music she usually sang along to couldn't. "Yeah! That was a blast, cool cat!" Her blue meanie buddy could carry a tune pretty decently, which was surprising, but pleasant to discover.

The people still hanging around were bothering her, so she flashed them another, very final sort of smile and turned her attention to Darsh in hopes that they'd leave. "Shouldn't you tell them how much the pottery is and stuff?" she suggested. If they were going to loiter, they might as well buy things. Something else occured to her as she spoke, however, and she scanned them out of the corner of her eye, half worried Jane would be there looking annoyed. After all, the last time she had hung out with Darsh, she had gotten grounded, and the memory made her extra-aware that her guardian wasn't around. Although the mail carrier was generally cool with Casia exploring in small, safe places like the farmer's market, and gave her money and an address in case she really did get lost, she didn't -exactly- have what you could call parental permission to be wandering off with a friend.

"If they wanna know how much it is, they'll ask." He was pretty free and easy when it came to selling Emma's stuff. Partially because he really didn't care wether it sold or not and partially because he was still a little cranky at everyone having run off on him. Sure, he'd sit here to make sure nobody stole anything, but he didn't have many intentions of actively selling the stuff.

At Casia's smile, most of the stragglers had wandered away and the two were more or less alone in the crowd. Darsh glanced around, spotting the brunette heads of Max and Emma in opposite directions but he couldn't tell if either of them were headed back towards the booth.

"That was more than a blast." Darsh's grin wouldn't seem to go away, high as he was from their little jam session. "We should do that again, for sure! You could come to the farm sometime if you wanted." He added generously.

The music still ringing in her head, Casia nodded. "I'd like that." she affirmed impulsively. "I'd like to sing with you again sometime, and I've never been to a farm before." There wasn't much nature around the suburbs Jane lived in, and she didn't take walks in the woods or anything like Anna did, either. The siren had been missing nature, and the farm brought up a mental image that meshed pleasingly with her memories of her old life. "Where's your pad, then?"

As he glanced around, she followed suit again, biting her lip. Should she be looking for Jane? Maybe after she found out where her harmonizing pal lived. "Here..." She pulled a notebook out of her pocket. "Write it here? With your name so I don't forget or anything. We can jam together sometime, yeah?" This had the sneaky added bonus of telling her who he was without having to ask, and Casia felt the all the relief associated with dodging the awkward question.
