The sun bore down on the beach, heating up the sand to uncomfortable levels. Most of the creatures that were usually about had gone to find shade to rest under and wait for the afternoon heat to make way for the evening cool. Even the birds were quiet, making the light breeze coming off the ocean the only background noise. There were few clouds in the sky and they were lazy, wispy things that did nothing to block the sunlight.

In this weather, Terra's hood was both a blessing and a curse. It kept the sun out of her eyes but the thick fabric didn't breathe well. She could feel sweat trickle down her neck as the sun beat against her back. As much as she liked the heat and the dry, it was getting to her, and her hoofsteps slowed more and more as she went along the shore. Looking around she spotted a patch of coarse grass up the shore, which in turn led to a small group of saplings. It wasn't the best shelter, but it would get her off the hot sand. She trotted to it, eager to take a short break.

It was the first time she had ever seen the sea - in fact, it sounded and smelt so much like bad weather that she had wanted to turn and go the other way - it sounded to her like muffled thunder and smelt like rain. However, since it had been sunny and warm, the Usdia reasoned that it couldn't possibly be bad weather. After pacing to and fro under the shelter of a huge tree, Grace decided to take her chances and trotted in the direction.

The sight left her speechless for a minute.

It not only sparkled in the distance, but the way the way hugged the beach made her giggle. The sand underneath her hoofs made her slightly uncomfortable, but she managed to ignore it for the most part; in fact, she just wanted to explore this new place! Smiling, she trotted along the beach, taking in the sights. The heat only started to affect her after a while, and when she saw a stranger in the distance, Grace couldn't help but follow behind.

"Hello there!" She chirped, although she sounded a little hoarse from a parched throat.

At first Terra thought she was imagining a second pair of hoofbeats following right behind. Small, lighter hoofbeats. She didn't slow down but her ears moved to listen, having trouble comprehending them. As far as she could see, she was alone...

Eyes on the grass, the mare didn't get the chance to look behind her before a voice made her jump almost right out of her hood. Her first reaction was to charge forward very fast, but then she changed her mind and slid to a messy stop in the sand. She faced the way she came, looking all around.

Left, right... down. Blue eyes blinked as Terra stared. She wasn't expecting to find a foal all by her lonesome! But wait, she didn't look like a foal... Her proportions were perfectly adult. Tilting her head absently to the side, she didn't really care that such open staring was rude. "Who're you?"

Grace stared back at the stranger, although her stare was more of a friendly and warm look - her eyes seem to give the impression that she just wants to chat and maybe make a new friend. Giving a smile, the Usdia giggled softly before she answered, "I'm Grace!" Then she paused, as if allowing the larger mare to absorb the information; a moment later, she opened her mouth again to talk, this time asking a question of her own, "What's your name?"

So... friendly. Obviously Grace didn't know that she was talking to a mare who would rather try her hand (or hoof) at manipulating others than befriending them. "Grace huh? I'm Terra." She grinned, stepping back and raising herself to her full height. Taller than Grace of course, but small for her breed.

"What are you doing out in this heat?" She walked in a slow half-circle around to Grace's side. "There's some grass over there, if you'd like to cool off?"

"Its nice to meet you, Terra!" The Usdia mare replied with a smile, her tail swinging happily behind her. She pivoted on the spot, her eyes never leaving the larger mare as she moved. Suddenly, Grace felt like a foal again as she stood beside Terra; it felt weird yet delightful at the same time. It almost made her wish to act like a foal again... Not that she doesn't already do it at times.

"I'm out exploring," She answered with a quick nod and a bright smile, ignoring the fact that she was frightened of the sounds and smells of the ocean just a moment ago. Then, she paused, looking out to sea, "Its the first time I'm here... I think the water is called the 'sea', right? I've heard of it, but had never seen it before."

She giggle before adding as an after thought, "It looks like a giant lake!"

Of course Grace had to start talking about the water. "Yeah, it's called the sea," Terra affirmed rather bluntly, looking at the waves with nothing less than contempt. "It's not quite like a lake though, it's much much bigger. And you don't want to drink from it." She grinned, knowing very well that it was salt water and not fresh like the rivers and lakes were. It'd be fun to see Grace figure that out for herself, though.

"The sea is dangerous too," she continued, narrowing her eyes as her gaze moved to where the shore met the ocean. "If it keeps rising, it will wash away all of the land. Come see," Terra moved away from the grass and trotted down from the soft sand to the wet, heavy sand that made up the edge of the beach. "See how the sand moves with every wave? Someday the water will get so high it'll wash away the very mountains." As much as it was a theory fabricated in her own mind, Terra's expression suggested that she believed it completely.

Grace kept silent as Terra spoke, nodding once in a while to show that she was listening. When she moved, the Usdia followed, trotting to the edge of the body of water; now that she was closer, the sounds and smells became louder and stronger... However, it wasn't in a chocking way. In fact, it was almost calming. The water also looks like it goes on forever, over where Grace could see it join the horizon in a straight line.

Then, Terra's words on how the water is not for drinking came into mind, and Grace took a cautious step forward, giggling as she sunk into the wet sand. Then, she walked right up the where the sea water went over her hoofs. Bending down, she closed her eyes and dipped her nuzzle in before taking a sip...

"Salty!" She exclaimed, spitting out the disgusting taste from her mouth before stumbling backwards to where she was standing with Terra before. She paused, taking comfort in observing the waves. Her look of fascination at the movement of the waves, however, soon changed into one of shock and horror, "The mountains? Really?"

Grace turned to look at the forests behind the beach, and the outline of the mountain a long way away... Can the waves really go that high? If Terra was right about the water, then she must be right about the waves too, right?

"Gross, isn't it?" Terra laughed, watching the usdia with amusement. "I hear if you drink too much, you'll get really sick. Maybe even die. The sea is so pleasant." Finishing on a sarcastic note, she shook her head. The die part could have been just an exaggeration, but Terra didn't care. The farther away from it, the better. Too bad it wasn't fresh water... The stifling hot hood was making her thirsty.

"Of course the flood wouldn't happen right away.. It might take a good rainfall or two. But it would happen so unexpectedly there would be no way to escape. Right now the water's too low..." She stepped towards the waves, letting the water wash over a hoof, damp sand clinging to the fabric cuffs on her legs. "Need another example?" Terra looked around. The glare from the sun off the shallows made it hard to find what she was looking for. But when she did, she reached out with her hoof and began scooping something onto the beach. It was a rock, oval and perfectly smooth.

Her theory may have been flawed, but Terra's knowledge of erosion was fairly solid. "See this rock? Do you know why you only find rocks this smooth in rivers and lakes?" She paused for a moment to let Grace think or say something if she wanted to. "The water grinds it down into sand. If a little bit of water, like these shallows here, can do that to a rock, can you imagine what all this water and more would do to the mountains?"

"Die?" The Usdia gasped, trotting backwards to get away from the shoreline; the sea was so dangerous! So pretty to look at, with its shimmering water and crashing waves, but who knew it could be so deadly? Her first trip to the beach wasn't what she had hoped for - she wanted to see something new and pleasant... Not something that could threaten the safety of the world as she knew it!

She listened carefully to what the mare had to say, her eyes widening so much that they eventually looked like miniature plates on her face. Frowning, she took a quick glance at the sea before looking down at the sand beneath her hoofs, and then finally back at Terra. If something so big and hard could be... Grounded into powdery sand, then the mountains... The mountains...

"They'll be flattened and destroyed!" She exclaimed, her voice shaking a little. One could tell that she was rather worried about these newly gathered facts about the sea as she shifted about, feeling uneasy with the danger so close to home... And her friends.

"Is there anyway to stop it?"

Terra nodded when Grace came to the right conclusion, though she couldn't help but feel a little puzzled. Usually when she told others about the flood they mocked her or put her down. Grace's easy acceptance was kind of strange. Not that that was a bad thing; she was delighted that someone actually believed her!

The Magma mare shook her head. "It'll be like trying to stop the sun from shining and the rain from falling. Impossible." Terra paused for emphasis, tilting her head a bit to the side out of habit. "There might be a way to escape to the mountains temporarily. But that would only delay the inevitable." Terra gazed back at the ocean with disdain, then started back up the beach. Being this close was also making her uneasy even though she had been that close many times before.

"Impossible?" Grace echoed, a frown upon her lips at Terra's emphasis. She turned and followed after the larger mare, shaking her head as she tried to come up with ideas to save everyone. Musing out loud, the Usdia questioned, "Are you sure? Maybe everyone could evacuate beyond the mountains? Maybe the mountains will be strong enough to stop the sea from destroy it?"

She paused, blushing a little; she didn't mean to sound so pushy, but Terra seem to know a lot about this impending 'natural disaster' and sounded like the right person to be asked. Giving a small smile, Grace continued, "I learned a lot today... I'm glad I decided to come see the sea." She nodded, agreeing with herself.

Terra was quiet for a while, deep in thought. She was reevaluating her theory. Perhaps there was hope after all... It wasn't like Terra to be optimistic, but maybe Grace's idea was a plausible one. "Maybe. Maybe we could evacuate to beyond the mountains. It might save us some time... " She mused a little, "I don't know how long the mountains could last, but they could make a good barrier for a while... Maybe long enough for us to figure out how to escape... It would depend on how much water there is too."

The heat was muddling her brain too much and she shook her head. She could try to think about it more later, though Terra was lazy in the way that she pretty much avoided thinking about anything too long and preferred to assume things. "Hey, glad I could teach you something. The more you know, eh?" Terra winked a little, feeling like she had accomplished something here.

"Well, at least there's some hope now," Grace replied happily, looking at the larger mare. She felt somewhat proud of herself, having thought of a plan to save her friends. Beaming, she trotted beside Terra, eying the horizon thoughtfully; maybe she should travel to the mountains before it gets destroyed by the sea... After all, she had never been near it, much less on top of it.

"Yes!" The usdia agreed wholeheartedly, "It might not be good news, but at least I know what is going to happen!" She paused as her stomach growled softly, indicating that it was almost time to head back home and grab a bite off her favorite berry bush... Besides, she could use a nice nap under some shade later in the day.

"I have to go back," She spoke, her tone tinged with sadness; she had never been good with good byes, and Terra had been great company! Looking up at the other Soquili, she added quickly, "I'll come visit again soon!"

{I figured it was about time to end it. =x Hope you don't mind.}

The way Grace looked so proud of herself was endlessly amusing to Terra, and she snickered a little. Naive little Usdia. She wondered what else she could tell her that she would believe. It seemed that she would believe just about anything. Ah, but that would be for another time. Terra really wanted to find a place to relax. It seemed to be time for Grace to go anyways.

"Alright, you're welcome to visit anytime," Terra replied, nodding affirmatively. "You can usually find me around here." She stopped to watch Grace go until she was out of sight, before turning away and making her way to the inviting, cool shade in the distance.
