Gareth stood outside as he always did, guarding. What was he guarding? Probably nothing. But it was the way he stood that always made it appear he was guarding something. His arms folded across his chest which was puffed out slightly. His legs spread just far enough apart that he was planted so firmly on the ground that a football player couldn't have toppled him. Sprawled out before him across the scenery was... a playground?

Today Gareth was guarding something. Across the little playground was tubby little yuni named Butalso. Japi had asked Gareth to take him somewhere fun and play with him, but to be honest, Gareth didn't play. So he had managed to pawn the fat little yuni off on some little kids and proceeded to do what he did best: guard.

He had long before secured the area. There were no suspicious people, no establishments nearby that might house them. There was an ice cream shop across the street that Butalso had begged Gareth to take him to first. Instead he had promised to take him there after. In the meantime, he was trying to think of reasons not to keep that promise.

Other than that, there was a small specialty clothing store, a food mart, a bar that was still closed, and a shop that sold cheap nic nacks that Gareth felt nobody would want.

User ImageThey'd taken him by surprise, for the most part, only the scuffling echoes of feet on pavement alerting him before something suspiciously fist-shaped had slammed into his temple and sent him sprawling. The young kurai wasn't inexperienced when it came to fighting, but he'd been distracted by the grocery list in his hands, and it hadn't occurred to him to be wary. Perhaps he should have realized that the group of boys he'd harassed mercilessly in Indrani's company had only been biding their time until he was alone and without divine protection. Either way, he'd scored a handful of retaliatory blows before the number of knuckles and legs had overwhelmed him.

Most of the lesson had been nonverbal, his growling trapped by the brick walls on either side of them, punctuated by the sound of fists hitting flesh. When he'd finally been kicked into silence, they'd retreated and left him dazed and bleeding, taking stock of his body to see how badly he was injured. Mostly bruises and superficial cuts, but it made his jaw clench as he gingerly picked himself up on the ground, not even bothering to swipe the dirt away.

Stumbling out of the alley where the ambush had been set, Soren blinked and lifted his lips against the sunlight, the sounds of children playing making his head ache all the more. The list he'd been referencing was balled in his hand and shoved against his nose to stifle the flow of crimson, tongue busy unsticking his split lips as he dropped down on a bench to brood. The kurai didn't especially care if the kids were gawking, marveling at the sight of his war wounds and listening to his colorful muttering. He was too absorbed in planning revenge to bother with his impressionable surroundings.

Gareth's ear twitched. There was yelling from between the grocery store and the clothing store. He turned, knowing there was an alley there. Hooligans. It must be. He made one last glance back to Butalso to make sure he was secure and made his way over to the commotion.

Gareth always took it upon himself to rid an area of such types. They were probably mugging some old lady after all, and he would have nothing of it. Indeed, when he reached the commotion, it did appear they were in the process of attacking someone. "Oi," he attempted to yell at them, but frankly, the volume of Gareth's voice didn't reach over their own commotion. As luck would have it, however, one turned around, probably checking their back and screamed something similar to "Eeek," tugging the shoulder of one of his comrades who turned and agreed with him. They shouted a signal to the rest who proceeded to do the same and the whole group fled.

But Gareth wouldn't let them off so easily. He took off after them. Sadly, speed was not one of his finer honed physical skills and he soon lost them. He grumbled his frustration as he made his way back to the alley. Whoever it was had already left, though Gareth noticed a few drops of blood making a trail back out of the alley. He hoped they had gone to find medical attention.

Across the playground, Butalso finally noticed that his guardian had disappeared. While any normal child might have been worried for his safety, Butalso had other concerns. "Wunning out on ice cweam," he muttered to himself. He hobbled his way over to where Gareth had been standing and looked around. There on a bench nearby was another yuni boy, a lot older than Butalso, covered in blood. Of course Butalso's definition of covered in blood was any amount more than a small scrape might give you. He was about to run for help when he saw Gareth coming back out of the corner of his eye.

When Gareth reached the playground, he saw Butalso running toward him. "Garef," he called. The boy could not pronounce Gareth's name properly even after being made to repeat it a hundred times. Gareth was about to roll his eyes when he saw the expression in Butalso's face. He actually appeared to be in distress. Gareth's guardian instinct took over and he dashed to scoop up the little yuni.

Once he was in Gareth's arms, Butalso pointed in the direction of the bloody boy, wimpering softly. "Scawy boy all covewed in blood." Gareth nodded and set Butalso back down. "Go play," he said, pointing back to the group he'd been with. He understood now what was going on. The injured victim had come over here.

After deciding that Butalso was completely safe again, Gareth approached the injured boy. His wounds weren't as bad as Butalso made it sound, but they weren't exactly going to heal properly without some kind of attention. Luckily, Gareth was experienced in first aid. He walked up to the yuni boy and in the only way he really understood how to do things, immediately started to help. He drew a cloth from the pouch Japi always insisted he carry with him when with Butalso. He was glad it finally came in handy, though not especially under the circumstances. Without permission or warning, he took the boy's hand and the balled paper away from his nose and replaced it with the cloth and muttered the simple instructions. "Tilt your head back, it'll stop the bleeding faster."

In the turbulence of getting the stuffing beaten out of him, Soren hadn't noticed an outsider bounding to his aid, only able to observe hooves as they'd passed and left him in the dust. For all he knew, it was one of his attackers come late to the party, going to join the rest for some celebratory drink; it had been too dark in the shade of the alleyway to distinguish one from the other, and he probably wouldn't remember exactly what any of them looked like in the coming hours. The youth had simply assumed the group had tired of their game and gone to ice their own minor scrapes while he got to languish slightly longer in oil spills and stray garbage. He knew he was in no condition to follow, but damned if he didn't want to, even if he ended up in intensive care.

There was an open channel in his arm where someone had raked his skin back - possibly with the help of a ring or a watch - and he gloomily wondered if he had anything to tie it with, at least until he got home and could tend to it with bandaids. Besides that, his nose was the most immediate problem. Through the ill-suited paper, he prodded the bridge of it to check for breaks, finding nothing too severe, despite the amount of bleeding he was doing. Some of it pooled in his palm from where the tissue dripped, like he was keeping it for ceremonious reasons, marking the umpteenth time someone had managed to nail him there. But salty drops were also starting to slip between his fingers, pattering into his lap, and he closed his eyes against a random rush of dizziness. How long had he been moping and oozing in this stupid stretch of park? Bastards, the whole lot of them.

It took a moment to register the shadow descending over him, some hulking silhouette blotting out the sun. Squinting his watering eyes, the kurai wasn't prepared for his wrist to be seized, immediately bristling and trying to haul it back into his possession. "Geroff." He snarled, flinching away from the contact to his nose, his speckled ears tilting back while his tail lashed. Who the hell was this guy? Some nanny goat that had ditched his calling for steroids? It made sense to tip his head back, though, and why he hadn't thought of that before, he could only blame on the way his head was throbbing. Maybe the initial hit had scrambled his brains a little. That still didn't mean he was about to bare his throat to a stranger.

Gareth stood back at the remark. Maybe he should have asked first? That sounded silly to him though. Why would anyone ask permission to help an injured child? Still, he didn't touch him again just yet. "Your arm looks pretty bad." Gareth's voice was quiet, barely audible to anyone not standing immediately next to them. It was always that way. That was really just the extent of his voice. "Did they take anything from you? I couldn't catch up to them." The admission was one of regret. There was even a little repentance in his voice.

Some of the tension dropped out of his posture when the larger male appeared willing to leave him alone, the cloth that had fallen like a bib across his chest reluctantly hauled back up to press over the faucet his nose was imitating. He angled his face to measure the other up, grudgingly tilting his head back as he did so to staunch the flow, dirty platinum waves of hair touching his shoulders. The light was stocky, unfriendly looking with his thick brow and tiger-striped frame, but apparently into playing the good samaritan. Warily, he shifted in his seat, amber gaze darting toward his arm again when it was brought up. Somehow, acknowledging it made the welling cut sting all the more, but he only shrugged nonchalantly. "M'fine." He muttered, turning the wound slightly into himself, protecting it with his ribs. It wasn't like he could lick it clean or something.

Faint surprise rippled across the lock down of his expression when the other seemed unhappy that they'd gotten away. He was big, but there had definitely been more of them, and it wasn't like they'd jumped out at him. Soren's eyes flickered down to his legs, tempted to smirk even though the tackiness of his lips stopped him. He definitely didn't look like a sprinter. Realizing that an answer was expected, he gave a negative shake of his head, pausing mid-gesture when he realized it hurt to do even that. The only thing he'd had on him was the list. The boy had been told to charge on their account at the store, rather than carry money around. It was just as well, considering they probably would have taken that too. As it stood, the only thing he'd been robbed of was dignity.

Since the boy had obliged his request to tilt his head back, Gareth relaxed a bit, but just enough to try and observe the rest of his injuries. The boy was indeed a Kurai, though he hadn't noticed before. Maybe he was too concerned with the blood. It wasn't that he was new to seeing a kurai, he honestly never saw one so young. It was simply... unexpected.

It was only a brief moment, but Gareth weighed the difference between helping a child and not helping a kurai. But he pushed his prejudice aside a moment and decided it was not worth ignoring his guardian instinct.

"Do you need to be taken somewhere?" Gareth asked, unsure of how he could help if the boy wouldn't allow himself to be bandaged. "I know a woman who could heal your injuries, quite perfectly in fact." He knew that even though Japi's power was limited in this world, she could easily draw on some of the extra power that he and the others provided for one quick heal like this.

Even after he'd given the bigger beast a shining opportunity to take his leave, he seemed to hesitate, still watching him like a grave bulldog waiting on a recognizable command. He groaned, a mixture of pain and annoyance clotting the sound, finally leaning back into the bench instead of sitting on the edge. There was an unpleasant taste in the back of his throat, maybe from the nosebleed, more likely caused by the bile that had risen up when his attackers worked his guts. Either way, he didn't feel like straining himself with shooing the other off, certain his attention would eventually fall back to whatever sick entertainment he derived from watching kids play.

His eyes opened to slits when he spoke again, pupils narrowing as he listened. What was he supposed to say? He wasn't some charity case in need of a healing hug and whatever else was being implied. "Go away." He rasped to convince him of just that, throwing the bloodied cloth and missing by a few fluttering inches. Thankfully, his nostrils seemed to have crusted over with red, forcing him to pant through his mouth as he stood on shaky legs, showing that he could do it on his own, if he were so inclined. He sank immediately back down into his seat when the demonstration was over, glowering at the Light and wishing he could snort derisively without chancing another gushing issue. See?

But he did need to get home; he wasn't idiot enough to assume he was in the clear. If they came back and found him curled up on a bench, they'd probably think he hadn't learned the first time around. Not that he had, but he at least wanted to even the odds out by not being an eyesore of a mess the next round. His freed hand moved to cover the greatest part of the tear on its twin arm, and he glanced apprehensively toward the alley. There were shadows there, but he didn't know if they were trashcans or something else. His eyes still felt like they didn't belong in his swelling face, and were much less inclined to operate correctly as a result.

Gareth of course, saw the stand and sit as a failed attempt, rather than an able demonstration. The boy's legs were not about to hold him up properly long enough to walk anywhere. Gareth hadn't meant he'd carry him, only be an escort, but there was the possibility the boy might need it.

But he was stubborn, probably as stubborn as Gareth, so the light Yuni decided to give the boy some time. "Name's Gareth," he informed the boy. "I'm still here with Butalso, the little fat one," he honestly didn't know any other way to describe the tubby little yuni. "Call for me if you need anything."

The name made his attention flicker for a second, deciding what the exchange meant and skittering back to the alley before long. "Soren." He conceded grudgingly, the one piece of manners Ishtar had managed to instill in him over years of failed attempts. If someone gave out their name, it was only right to hand one back in turn. It was lame, pointless, and probably encouraged stalking tendencies, but it was better than all that please-and-thank-you trash. He didn't care to acknowledge the other name mentioned, nor did he bother to look and see what chubby case was being referred to out of the cherub-faced mass of shrieking children. But if he strained hard enough, he saw that the figures he'd been jumpy over were too blocky to be people, and probably not about to leap up and attack him further. So the bozos were gone, at least for now.

"Yeah. Sure." He mumbled, barely listening as he shrugged dappled shoulders up, popping his jittery spine and making a temporary tent with his ears. Frankly, he just wanted to put his head between his knees and make the slow spin halt for as long as it took to totter home. Indrani would probably raise hell, and then Missus Maternal would be all over him, clucking her tongue and wrapping him in bandages until movement was compromised. Not that he was planning on dancing around any time soon. The kurai did drop his chin a little, letting it touch his chest, stretch out his neck and cool the sweat on the nape. At least he wasn't bleeding out through his nose anymore. The offered handkerchief was still on the ground, stains standing out against the material like half-dyed wrapping paper. Maybe he could grab it up and bind his arm with it. Not like this Gareth guy was going to want it back.

The moment Gareth returned to his self-dictated post, Butalso came running up to him. "Is the bloody boy okay?" His voice was loud and whiny.

"He's fine," Gareth lied to the little yuni. There was no use in explaining to Butalso why Soren wouldn't accept help. Maybe he had family on their way? It was doubtful. Still in the back of his mind, Gareth knew he should keep an eye on the kid, even if it was unsolicited.

Butalso's little eyes were filled with little tears, though Gareth couldn't imagine why. He rolled his eyes and reached into the pouch Japi had given him for something to wipe Butalso's scrunched up face with but came up empty handed.

Gareth turned slightly in Soren's direction, realizing he'd left Japi's cloth with the boy. He'd have to replace it, as it wasn't his, but he figured the kurai child needed it more anyway. Japi was an understanding woman, she wouldn't be angry. If anything, Gareth's bonded would be disappointed that he hadn't helped. Gareth didn't know if Japi would understand either why Soren didn't want help. He hoped she wouldn't stop by like she sometimes did, to check up on Butalso.

As for the fat little yuni, it didn't take him long to stop crying as he faced the ice cream shop across the street. "I'm weady to go eat ice cweam now," he informed Gareth in a very matter-of-fact tone.

"Not yet," Gareth replied a little absently. He wanted to make sure at least someone came and picked up the little yuni.

New tears filled Butalso's already reddening eyes. "But I wanna," he whined loudly, holding the last 'a' out and getting louder.

Gareth looked at the child with a start, not realizing Butalso's lungs were that powerful. "Alright, alright," he tried to calm the tubby little yuni down. "We'll go," he conceded finally. "But I want to talk to the bloody boy one more time before we go." Gareth tried to use the voice Japi did when she was trying to calm down any one of her children, and succeeded partially. Butalso stopped his noise. Gareth sighed inwardly in relief.

Taking a calming breath Gareth looked around to make sure no one was bothered by that scene. Then again, they were at a park, with lots of whiny little children and plenty of parents who understood how that sort of thing worked. No one seemed to care.

After determining the situation cleared, Gareth headed back to Soren. "I'm taking Butalso for some ice cream," he started, hoping at least his persistence would get to the young kurai. "Do you want some?"
