tonight was our last game, so its not like we were badly affected.
she got in and arguement with our band director 2 days after our state competition (also our last....on october 29....so its been like 2 weeks....) and quit being drum major AND quit band completely.
since then we've been depending on our other one to just stand in the middle of the field and conduct. we need three, but because of construction, we can only have two which has been really hard to deal with.....one was pretty much just impossible. there were major phasing issues on some songs, people couldnt see her in some areas, and if she messed up, the whole band would mess up.
its been a hard few weeks, and tonight was senior night.....the drum major that quit had a poster, came without saying anything, took it, and left. i really have no idea what is going to happen with her.....but its a plus that our season is now over so we dont have to deal with only one drum major.
so, has this happened to anyone else???

That never happened to us but, like two months within the band season our director quit without telling us. So for a month we had no director and it was just about to begin the comptetition season. We were all pissed off at him.

One of our ast. drum majors quit last year.... I'm the new one.... he was a really great leader, but our teacher is an a*****e who must be communist because he doesn't believe in individual thought, and they got into an arguement and he quit, though he didn't make a scene. sad I must live up to his legacy. I just have to.

Luckily we've never had drum majors quit without a really really good reason to, so that either makes us lucky or very commited people. I hope for the latter.

Our bands only have one drum major, so... even if we don't like them, tough.

With 4 drum majors, if one drops out, it'll be fine because we always keep one back field, and rarely march facing backfield. We do that probably each year, but only for short parts or an assistant jazz runs back field to conduct.
But I guess we're just too dedicated, no drum major has ever quit in my 3 years, and I know it hasn't happened in the last 4 years before I came. Our director also tries to keep his temper under control, so people in leadership rarely quit, and even though some people hold a grudge against him, they usually come back to join band again.

our drum major quit... actually our BD kicked her out... apparently our drum major had an attitude.... and it was the fourth? game of the season!!! and then everything got all crazy and said that the clarinets section leader [the new drum major] and the second section leader had plotted against the drum major.... stare and then it got all crazy and everyone like everyone's level was brought up.... and it was kinda crazy and hard to get used to things with out Betty... i still miss her... crying

Being a Drum Major, I can't even understand how a DM could just up and quit like that. That's just completely absurd. Even if the Band Director was a complete jerk, you're in it for the band, not the director. IMO, if the DM was immature enough to put their own attitude before the band, then they probably didn't have the right heart about the whole thing in the first place...
My band is rather large, and we're struggling with 2 Drum Majors. We've got to work as a team to make sure we keep each other in check both mentally and technically. There's no way in heck I'd give up on my band.. I really respect the other DM at my school. She takes so much crap from the members of the band and I know there has been a lot of times when she's wanted to give up but hasn't. It's just baffling to me how a DM could ever, especially after making it through an entire season, just quit like that and drop band like a bad habit. I've learned so much this past year and I wouldn't trade it for the world.. And band is my life; I couldn't live without it...
Sure I take the crap from the director's mistakes and all that, but it comes with the territory; it's your fault when things go wrong if you're a DM... I think everyone knows that when they try out...
I hope this whole situation with your band doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth when it comes to future DMs... And I've got mad respect for the one that's keeping it together.
