i got 3 tiny ones for my community 10gal. are honeys and dwarfs the same type? will they get too big for my 10gal? if so can i keep them in my 10gal for a bit longer?
when i got them i had thought that dwarfs and honeys were the same. i know, stupid me

Honeys and Dwarfs are actually quite closely related, and I'm not too sure about this, but I think they can even hybridise.
There are some color morphs of the dwarf that looks a lot like a honey. Personally appart from color I find the dwarfs to be a bit larger and rounder in shape. I can't say about temprament since I've only kept honeys.
Some people say that honeys are also hardier and less dissease prone then dwarfs.
Their maximum length is around 5 cm.

3 honeys in a 10 gallon should be fine. I used to have 2 honeys and a ram chiclid with 5 cardinal tetras, and it never led to any trouble.
Currently I have 2 honeys in a 2.5 gallon.

So what kind of honeys do you have? Wild type or a color variant?

a honey is a type of dwarf gourami (gouramis that grow to 3-4 inches at the most and have the genus name colisa which are more often much calmer fish)

the bigger more mean gouramis like three spot, platinum and goldens are genus trichogaster and grow to a max of 6 inches. (pearl gourami being the trichogaster exception. 4 inches and very peaceful)

ok, they are each about an inch right now. they are yellow with orange fins and are adorable! they seem very smart too, maybe even smarter than the betta(?)
is my tank overcrowded with 3 honey gourami, 1 guppy, 1 betta, and 3 cory catfish? my snail and one of my guppies recently died so i had a bit more room in the tank. im paranoid about overcrowding my fish.

I'm not sure if they are smarter then a betta, but I have heard that some will spit water against the lid of their tank to signal their owners that they are hungry.
I have yet to experience this, or hear it.
I also noticed that they will recognise objects, they know the difference between a tube of fishfood (they get exited), and a tube of lipstick (they won't react much).
They also get skittish the moment they see a waterjug on the dresser, since it means I'll be changing the water soon.

But I think a betta can probably also learn to recognise objects. I know ou can teach them to swim trough hoops and jump on floaters. So I'm asuming they are pretty smart too.
I think bettas are easier to get handtame.

I think you have the color variant, the wild form is silvery when juvenile.

also i have another question about fish keeping. i no longer use heat lamps for any of my reptiles in my room and so my water isnt the right temp anymre. i need a heater and dont know what type or brand to get. at the moment ive just been pointing a light at the tank but i would like something that can be on at night
PostPosted: Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:27 am

Usually the packages of the heaters state how man gallons they can heat.
I'm guessing you'll need a 25 watt heater.

But I also found this;
Information on heaters

However I was advised to use a 10 watt for a 2.5 gallon, because a 25 watt would oveheat my tank.
Comecials state that a 10 watt heater is for .5 to 5 gallons, so for 10 gallons I'm asuming you'd need around 20 watt.

From my experience this is true when the room temperature is 20°C and up, sadly not when it's under 20°C

Hope this helps ^^;

i usually buy a heater that has an automatic thermostat (if it doesnt automatically turn off dont buy it) and is rated for a tank larger than what i am putting it in. so if i wanted a heater for a 10 gallon tank i would use something rated for say a 20 gallon tank.

heaters rated for the tank never get it warm enough in my experience.

like for my 55 gallon tank i use a 300 watt heater which is like for a 100 gallon tank and my water temperature has NEVER changed.
i used a heater rated for 55 galllons and my temperature was always much lower and the heater was always on but never did anything.

as for a brand...i think people worry too much about brands...just buy one you can afford. if you can afford a high end end one buy it. if you are low on money buy a cheaper one. from my experience all aquarium equipment seems to do the same thing.

same with food. read the lables and its all pretty much the same.

im jusused to reptiles and rats and with those animals you need to be brand picky so im used to asking about brands all the time

We keep reptiles too and I still don't see worrying about brands. We just buy what will get the job done (correct heat lamps correct lights ect)

well some brands are better than others, mostly when it comes to gutloads. though im also brand picky about my under tank heaters. exo terra brand ones dont get that hot so i always get zoo med ones.
im also brand picky about my feeder mice, but thats more for morality reasons and less on quality

Hmm, well, I'm not sure if brands are world wide, but I like the brands Hagen and Tetra.
I usually buy Hagen or Tetra-tec products and food from Tetra-min. They are not overly expensive, and I've never quite had complaints.
I also have some stuff from the brand Marina but not enough to give a review.
I don't know if you'll have these brands over there though, since I suspect they are european countries.

If I were you I'd just get the most decent looking product. Not necisarilly the cheapest, but you don't have to take the most expensive.

Edit: There is one brand I refuse to buy; Wardly. I had a lot of bad experiences with that. Especiall the food.
