I was talking with a few friends about beyonce wanting to remake Wonder woman, Jaden will smiths son will be staring in the remake of The Karate kid, and will smith staring as James bond in a remake of the James bond film DR. No (I think). Then a term came up called blackifying. I guess you can tell the terms meaning. I was also reading up on these remade films and It seems to get more negative feedback then non black remade films like the omen. But even though I would like to believe it's because these classics are too wonderful to be remade thats why people are upset. I would feel like I would be Ignorant to ignore the racial motivation especially with this term being used. Or maybe I'm just being ridiculous.

I don't think you are being ridiculous; unfortunately, color still matters a LOT to most people in the US. xp

I think that the term is silly, of course; there's no such thing as "making something 'black'." What would that mean, anyway? "Blackifying" Nascar would be what, allowing drivers to eat fried chicken and watermelon behind the wheel?? It just doesn't make any sense, since fewer and fewer black Americans fit the old stereotypes anymore.

Casting a black actor in a part which was previously played by a white person shouldn't mean anything negative; it should be seen as positive because film-makers are wanting to at least appear more open-minded, tolerant, and forward-thinking. 3nodding They are also trying to appeal to a wider range of movie-goers, and with a "black man" in the white house, now is a great time to seize the opportunity to capitalize on this new "avant-garde" American film-making attitude.

It really depends on the movie itself and the context. Like the reason why the Honeymooners sucked because that was a classic show and Black-washing it was pretty pointless since the basic idea could have be taken anyway. I mean we see it all the time on Fox. Actually I guess that more of the whole "What's in a name"

Sometimes it's the casting like The Wiz had Diana Ross not have gotten the lead role at age I guess 30ish the movie probably would have done MUCH better. Seriously she was just too old to play someone that young and was a horrid casting mistake.

While I want to see more Blacks on the big screen remaking such movie seems rather pointless and are usually made just to fail. So that Hollywood then have an excuse not to cast Black actors for bigger roles. So really they should stick to some original concepts or do something fresher.

As there's are a ton of books, video games, comics, ect that have yet been made and can easily have Blacks in.

100 bullets? Y The last man? Mass effect? yes please!

Come to think of it rumors are starting to pop up about a Cowboy Bebop live action movie and there were Black people in that. Hell I can see a Black girl playing Edward and a Black man playing Jet or even Spike.

Though I know all the hardcore anime fans will b***h.

In general I'm not so hung up about remakes (some are really good, like the movie 'Bride and Prejudice'). But when black stereotypes are put in remakes, that's when I hate it. It's like, dang, it's bad enough black people are constantly stereotyped and negatively portrayed in all parts of life and society, and bad enough I have it basically shoved down my throat 24/7, do I HAVE to be reminded of the BS in films, too?

Black remakes of white 'classics' are fine. STEREOTYPICAL black remakes of white 'classics' tick me off.

To switch things around, I don't like when non-black remakes are made, and everything that was great about the original is watered down and white-washed and comes out like a slice of dry, naked toast. I hate that, too.

I have mixed feelings, yet again. It depends on the movie and in somethings that are constanly being re-made and parodied, like Bride and Prejudice, I don't mind. I do mind when a "black version" leads to a disgusting display of coonery.

Now comic books and that sort of then then NOOOOO!! I don't appreciate DC making catwoman black, her character is white! And to make matters worse, they used the same person that played Storm, a Marvel character. That's like comic company infidelity which makes it even weirder. There's enough black characters not to slaughter the white characters. It goes the same way for white washing black characters. It's all unnecessary, it's like making Superman and Batman black. I don't know why comic characters are different, they just are. Leave them alone Hollywood or I'm becoming a hermit.

I know and thanks to Angel here I hate Hack-c**k (Hancock) all the more. I had no idea we had so many Black superheros. Like I knew of Cloak from Cloak N Dragger, Storm, Black Hawk, Black Lighting, Storm, and a few others.

UGH so yeah there was no reason for Hancock at all. Just like there's no reason to make a Black version of any white movies just to create some kind of pesudo equality in Hollywood.

Also for the record Meteor-Man kicks Hancock a**!

I admit that some of the movies here mentioned I liked. Of course not the honey mooners. But The wiz and and hancock I liked.

Now I know these movies werent perfect. But hancock kinda proved that some "Black" super hero stories weren't ready to be told yet. If you didnt like hancock a God that came to earth, lost his memory, and became a superhero a guy that was just made. Imagine how people would have responded to Luke cages story one who had been here for decades and who's story is worst than hancocks. People would have just thought he was like hancock completley made up and probably a rip off of the guy from mortal combact. But Nicholas cage changed his last name to cage because Luke cage was his favorite super hero.

The Wiz was very musicaly perfect and didnt take away anything from the story. I think there's a difference in black washing and just adding black characters to a storyline once played by a white person. Which the Wiz did and had some of the best voices. Despite diana being chosen at a very old age dorothy wasn't exactly sixteen herself.

I liked that they made catwoman black. I dont like that they used the same person that basically messed up with storm. But the fact that she was black I like that they did. Since the catwoman persona was always being changed and taken over by a new woman.

Now again just because they casted a black character where a white actor formaly played but never changed the story. Doesnt mean it's black washed.

Which because of words like blackifying and black washing gets movies bad reviews though these movies are very good.

Mind you hancock could have been written way better. But you have Iron man with basically the same story track drunken wino jerk gets confidence and a chance to change his life and save the world. and it breaks box office records and gets better reviews. So it again leads to that people just aren't ready for certain roles to change and it should. What if hancock had been played by a hispanic or palenstinean (Sp?) would it have been accepted better or worse?

Hmm. I dunno. See I saw Metro Man a long time ago and I liked that MUCH MUCH better than Hancock as to me it was more realistic and again since I'm from the inner city I related to it. As the story was... dude get hit by a metro, gets powers, cleans up the inner city, defeats the mob, and brings the community together.

Also remember people were aware of Iron Man. Who the hell is Hancock? I think it if was an actually well est. Black superhero like a stand alone Storm movie (w/o a certain someone playing her) or Cloak and Dragger. You know an already well known hero with comic book fans with a more down to Earth storyline.

Hell Static Shock probably would have been better than Hancock! Yeah you can't get me to like Hancock every time I see it coming on the TV I just cringe. I think even the Wanyes did a better job with Blank Man. neutral

I agree with your opinion though. Just saying I can't get behind Hancock and I don't it would have matter if another race had played the lead. It just was a stupid movie from start to finish. It was like all those parody movies. IE Super Hero Movie, or Not another Teen movie, Scary movie, ect.

UGH!

It doesn't have to from Disney's main studio. Remember they also own several other film studios so in theory it doesn't have to suck. As I been told Kill Bill is actually a Disney film.

Wow you seen Blankman xd YAY I don't feel alone now.

I know I'm a year late, but this doesn't help. Kill Bill was terrible, all of them. I remember Blankman being watchable.

Why do you think Kill Bill was terrible?

You must've been seeking something from the movie that you weren't meant to get.

I wish I had my USB as I wrote a paper on why that movie was crap. Mostly because the director is a hack and steals from other people. However, its okay since its him and well because Lucas did the same thing. Also, it's pretty stereotypical the whole way through, has that whole white badass savior BS archetype.

That's pretty unfair to pull race into the equation.

Like I said, you were probably seeking something from the movie you weren't meant to get.
