The night wasn't as dark as it could be. The moon did a fair job of illuminating it, but the flames on the young stallion's hooves did a lot more. Somnium wondered idly what true darkness was like - he'd never had the opportunity to experience it. He wondered if it was even possible for him. Perhaps, he supposed, if someone were to cut off his hooves?
Such idle curiosity was really the only thing that had occupied Somnium since he'd left Sanika's teepee. So far, his quest to learn about his Kalona heritage was a total failure. He blamed Nagual-an, as was his habit, and continued on his way.

Coal was restless and bored with the day to day routine he always did. tail lashing about as he trampled through some bushes, he wasnt exsactly the type to be silent in his movement. he was bold, violant and would take any excuses to kill something just for the pure enjoyment. eyes narrowed as he caught a glint of something like fire. snarling, he decided to investigate since if nasty two leggers where about well he would just go take care of them. maybe he could finaly have some fun for once rather than than having things be boring.

Somnium's reverie was interrupted by the sounds of something crashing through the undergrowth. He couldn't imagine what it was...but it was coming his way!
The orange-haired stallion stopped and took on a fighting stance, hoof-flames flaring brightly in preparation. Whatever was coming, he would be ready for it!

Coal was not ready for a stallion to be waiting for him when he broke through. no he had expected a couple of stupid two leggers that he could have a bit of fun killing off. instead here he was face to face with another kalona though he found it odd to see flames at his hooves. giving a deep growl, he now had to use that brain of his since he had gotten himself in this situation in the first place. " who the hell are you?" sizing up the other, Coal may be a brute but his mother Cynder taught him to atlest pick his fights wisely so he wouldnt end up getting himself killed.

Somnium was probably less surprised by Coal than vice versa. However he'd never seen a Kalona with so many horns before...actually, he'd never seen a Kalona besides his father and his brother before. But it probably wasn't a good idea to mention that...
"Somnium," he answered shortly, eyeing the other stallion. "And who does that make you?" he sneered. And really, he felt he had a right to sneer. It was all well and good to fear nothing at night and make as much noise as a stampede, but subtlety had its place as well. After all, wasn't that part of how his mother terrified her prey?

"Coal." he really had not ever met any other kalona besides his own family memebers. so with Somnium having flaming hooves and a tail like some grounded, so it made Coal raise a brow and mostly the flames caught him off guard. " your pretty little lights caught my attention and asumed i would come across prey nothing else." blunt and stright to the point, he never spoke more than what was needed even when he was being sarcastic to someone. tail lashing about, when he was riled up it was hard for him to settle down specialy when he had been expecting to have some fun which now was ruined.

Coal, huh? The name certainly seemed to suit him, Somnium thought privately. Still, the other was truly an interesting sight with his tattered-looking wings, horns all over, and a tail that was as much a weapon as any other limb. He hadn't even known such a thing was possible until now.
Then again...Somnium had to be honest with himself. His world had been very small up until now. It was time and past for him to learn these things.
"My 'pretty little lights,' as you call them, are quite useful when cooking my prey," Somnium told Coal blithely. "Though if you thought me to be a pathetic two-legger, I can assure you that my flames are hot enough to be a weapon." The flames in question flared a little with emphasis, and some of the grass near Somnium's hooves began to smoke.

Coal could easyly how those flames could be a weapon, that could burn his oponite and should not be taken too lightly. " theres no doubt there and i honestly dont need a demisration ether." a wicked grin was on his face now and he now started to circle Somnium, while eyeing the flames. " so what exsactly brought you to this area?" stopping in his tracks, he was courious to find out if Somnium was all talk or not.

Somnium followed Coal's movements with his eyes as best he could, resisting the urge to whirl around and keep his back from the other Kalona. The situtation was not nearly as fearsome as when he'd confronted his mother. However, he didn't allow the flames to die even the tiniest bit yet.
"I'm...searching," he answered, having not yet thought of a good way to phrase his quest that wouldn't lead to being attacked. Somehow, he didn't think a search for knowledge, even if it was about the heritage of Kalonas, would garner respect from Coal.

Coal stopped suddenly and stared at him. " what exsactly would that be?" snorting, it would be rather hard for somnium to gain any respect from coal. well it would be hard for anyone too since he was a brute and h a love for violance. " i have yet to find anything worth searching for except a good meal and some amusment." smirking, he wondered now what somnium was searching for now since it perked his couriousity. giving his tail a good lashing about, he was rather calm at the moment though it wouldnt be hard to set him off.

Somnium's eyes narrowed as the other stallion stopped. The flames on his hooves flared slightly. The encounter had suddenly become much more...delicate...than it had been mere moments before.
"I'm trying to find what it is that makes us Kalona," he said slowly. At the last moment he made sure to say us instead of a, because he didn't want Coal to think he didn't consider himself one of that illustrious breed. He was sure that if the black stallion sensed any hesitation on his part, he would be prey.

Coal gave a crackling laugh. he wondered how someone such as Somnium could not know what makes a kalona. " so your going around asking other kalona to tell you what makes us Kalona. thats rather bold when your parents should of taught you want makes a kalona, unless your some half breed." snearing as he said half breed, as he hated half breeds and lessers since thats how his parents raised him to be. tail lashing about, he wondered if Somnium would be bold enough to even tell him if he would pure or a half breed.

Somnium's flames crackled warningly. "My father...tried," he replied carefully, "but it's difficult to understand when your mother is a skinwalker." The young stallion threw out that information almost carelessly. He avoided mentioning and tried not to think of his grandmother, his father's mother and the reason why he felt so isolated from his Kalona heritage.

Coal was shocked to hear that Somniom's mother was a skinwalker. he persinaly never had seen one and only hear tales of them. " interesting...i must admit i have yet to come across a skinwalker so i know little about them." snorting, he still wasn't all that impressed though it wasnt everyday you come across a half kalona who had a skinwalker for a mother. growing bored, he wasnt one for chit chat so he was growing bored rather fast though the skinwalker thing perked his interest some.

Something that could not quite be called a grin crossed Somnium's face. "A Skinwalker is more fearsome than you'll ever be," he told Coal quietly. His yellow eyes weren't focused on the other Soquili, instead seeing a dark night that wasn't nearly as long ago as he would've liked.
He shook off the thought, wings rustling slightly. The longer this encounter went on, the more uncomfortable he became.
