Yes, I know there are probably already threads like this, but I enjoy being different and I had to make my own!
Please post any differences you see between the novel and the movie you may have noticed. I will be posting things as well. So, pay close attention, and report back!

I've only read the GL version so you'll have to forgive me...but why don't they ever add the grasshopper and the scorpion?

It's funny that you mention the grasshopper and the scorpion. The fact that it's not mentioned has always kind of peeved me. It's a pretty significant piece of imagery. "If, in two minutes, mademoiselle, you have not turned the scorpion, I shall turn the grasshopper...and the grasshopper, I tell you, hops jolly high!"

Man, I love that quote! xd

It was in the Lon Cheney film... that made me very very happy.

Which movie are you talking about? There are far too many to really compare them ALL to the book.

I bought the book yesterday (for £1, gotta love charity shops) and spent the whole time like this: eek . The book is completely different to the film I've seen (the recent one) and a whole lot better too.

The 'hops jolly high' bit made me actually giggle, and I liked the part where everyone thought the mangers had gone stark raving loony.

Ooo! Remembered a big difference - the Meg Giry character - in the book she's a bit...strange...but in the film she's all glam and beautiful.

I do believe I'm an even bigger phan than before! And this post is mostly off topic...

I think a huge difference is that they really toned down the lair scene in the 2004 movie. Raoul didn't go through as much torture as he should have and Christine should have had a bigger choice.

There's a scorpion/grasshopper scene in the original silent? Cool! I guess I didn't see as much of that as I thought I did. Whatever, I'm going to see it on Halloween!

The scorpion/grasshopper is also in the 1997 animated movie.

Here's an icon made from a screencap of that scene, since I've lost the original cap.

It's fairly hard to find, but well worth the search. It's the closest to Leroux of any movie.

The book and the movie are very very different. But I love them both. I mean the whole African Jungle part, where the people will commit suicide by haging themselves on the tree, took me completely by supirse. But I found it very hard to put down.
I have also found there is one movie, that stars Claude Reins, who is Louis in Casablanca!

Well, I only read Gaston Leroux 's book and only saw the 2004 movie, so I shall compare only the two. I saw the animated movie but a looooo0ong time ago, so I don't remember it. sweatdrop

Um... Raoul should've cried more in the movie? sweatdrop I dunno... Because in the book, he seems to burst into tears a lot. And how come they didn't mention his brother in the movie either? Raoul is the Vicompte, so obviously, there must be a Compte! confused Compte Philippe De Chagny! cool

I own that movie. It is pretty rare to find now...but you can get lucky and find it on ebay. Mine was reasonally cheap on ebay ($30.00) and I saw another someone was selling (saying how rare) that was $50.00. There is also another animated one...I think made in 2004...somewhere around there...but it is out of stock. Everywhere...I checked. You would have to be really lucky to find that.

I'm really mad that most of the movies take out the persian. He's my favorite character. And they don't even have the phantom planning to blow up the opera house with everyone in it. That's a pretty central character developement to me.
