Hello, I'm Echo. While reading this, bear in mind that I do not yet have The Faceless Ones gracing my shelf. Just the first two. >.<

I love the Skulduggery Pleasant series to pieces. Simply adore it. The setting is just obscure enough for me to not know anything about so it's like a hole new world, but familiar enough that I can find it on a map. The characters are deep enough to make me interested, but they're not exactly the brooding figures that parade around in The Count of Monte Cristo.

Hell, it's aimed at teens and everyone loves it!

Now, about that world I mentioned.

I am a fan of AUs, and OCs, and using history in my fan-fictions whenever I can, drawing upon prejudice and traditions that I'm pretty sure would appear a lot more in this series if we ever got a good in-depth look at the average magician's life. I mean, these people live for hundreds of years, they have to have some sorts of weird holidays and religions and such.

So this thread is about me, going on tangents about the possible daily lives of Magicians, what their laws might be about, and any prejudices that make my sadistic side giggle.

Oh, and it's also about you, shooting down or supporting my 'facts.'

Bear in mind that while anything I type is open to argument, please don't just say "NO THAT'S STUPID YOU SUCK GO DIE." That just depresses me and I'll go sulk for a few months, loosing my muse for this thread along the way. And it will be all your fault.

Please just point out anything that's glaringly obvious, like if I say that Tanith's an Elemental. No, she's not. Stfu.

First up: Adepts and Elementals. And all those Mary-Sues I hate.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:20 pm

From my point of view, I believe that the two types of magic- Elemental and Adept- evolved from completely different places, perhaps from different sides of the world.

Elementals. They can do things with the elements. Of course. It's also been seen that Skulduggery can do something with symbols that does the Reflection, but I'll attend to that later. Elementals don't do anything that involves themselves, they just alter the world to do what they want.

Adepts. They can do practically anything, from read minds to turn invisible to climb up walls. Sometimes, they can do multiple things, like Tanith, who can climb up walls and also unlock locks (I think). There are no limits on what it is that Adepts do, but I don't think they can do anything with the Elements. They can alter themselves or the world directly related to themselves (like China), but not the world in general.

They're obviously different. In no way do I see Adept magic sharing common traits with Elemental magic, other then the symbol thing. I'll get to that later. Elementals don't turn themselves into birds. Adepts don't push air and call it levitation. They're not the same, and I don't see any way they can mix without it just becoming a Sue character or a God.

So I've established they're different. And now, for my favorite part...

-RACISM-

Now, seriously, think about this. You live in a house where all your sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, and great-great-grandparents threw fire and blasted air at each other. Every single one. (Yes, I believe magic is genetic. Don't agree with me, you can sue.)

All of a sudden, you meet a family where the mother grows flowers, the father turns into a bird, the son reads minds, and the daughter does freaky things with yarn.

...What the ****? Obviously, you're going to be confused.

On the flip side, your family has members who do all kinds of different things with spells, books, Reflections, symbols, and running up walls.

You meet a family where everyone does the exact same thing. All the time. Every day.

Jesus, don't they ever get bored of being so uniform?

A couple of generations of confusion turn into mistrust- There must be something wrong with them, they're all different, they're all the same...

-That one can read minds, he must be using our thoughts against us!

-That one can make things explode, she could kill us all!

-Those guys are all alike, they could be making an army to destroy us!

Soon enough, there's an accident- An Elemental accidentally sets an Adept's drapes on fire, an Adept gets tired of the Elemental's cat eating their chickens, I don't know. But you have shots fired, prejudice spreads.

Take, for example, the Jews in the 1900s. It was ridiculous how easy Hitler turned a nation against them, because the mistrust was already there. After a while, they're just not human any more.

I'm guessing that the Adepts and the Elementals fought a couple of wars, worked it out somehow, and you get to Serpine and whoever it was he worked for I really don't know[/strike.]

Suddenly the Adepts and Elementals are working together against a common enemy. There's no bond stronger then one formed on the battlefield.

...So, they stop hating each other. They stop fighting.

But there's still that "They're different then us, they're strange," feeling lingering.

You even have some racism (because that's what it's called) from Skulduggery in the first book, when he mentions 'How it's odd that an Elemental goes so wrong,' or something to that effect. And Derek-sama says he's, what? 300, 400 years old?

Everybody gets along with Tanith just fine in the books, but where I live, just 100 years ago people with different colored skin couldn't go to school together.

And the point of this all is (if there is one)...

Racism. Also, stop making Mary-Sues that can do both. THEY CAN'T.

I think I'll do the thing about how Elementals can do symbols and how the genetics of it works tomorrow. biggrin

smile
Wow, this is good.
In adepts you forgot necromancy, the strike through didnt work, but otherwise good.

Also, teleporters, they can appear anywhere thats why people dont like them, and necromancers, people who can control death and shadows are always feared.

Adepts cant push air and call it levitation, but they could probably manupliate gravity to do so.

And then you get the monsters, Vampires, trolls ect. We still havent been told much about them...

Skulduggery is 400, he says so in book 3 "Im over 400 years old, there's alot of things i havn't told you."

It may be possible for mages to do both, but as you havnt read book 3, i cant give examples, though book 4 is going to be epic.

I want to find out more about cleavers, vamps and necromancers... The books are great, in the first week i had it i reread book one atleast 5 times.

Will you be joining in with the main roleplay aswell as the war one?
PostPosted: Thu Jun 11, 2009 4:46 pm

>.< Sorry about the "Both adept and elemtental" thing, I just kinda got pissed off at all the Mary-Sues out there who are like "OH, LOL, I'M BOTH AHHAHAHAHAHAAAAA." I do that sometimes.

Necromancers are just supposed to be taken automatically as adepts. If I spent all day typing all the adept powers I could think of, I'd have a list (in small text) that is about as tall as I am.

And I might, but role plays that are pretty active usually make me drop out pretty quickly. I'm also more of a "let's make witty comments and not fight at all and OH LOOK ANGST" roleplayer then a fighting role player.

(Which means that it makes no sense why I went into the war one, but whatever.)

That does get annoying, and it will be revealed in the 4th book if they actually keep both powers if they begin using a different one.

Yeah, i see what you mean, but in the books, Tanith is an adept, China is an adept, Lord Vile is a Necromancer. Its like a subgenre set by the adepts themselves as they dont want to be grouped with them, cause most people fear them.

Lol, your right, joining the war one dosnt make sense.

Another thing is how powerful mages get, if they practice daily for hundreds of year, an elemental should be at the red sea parting stage even though Skulduggery said they couldnt.
Lord Vile for example, they say the battle plan for fighting him is "Wait until your army is gathered behind you, then you attack and hope someone gets in a lucky shot." Perhaps not the exact quote, but its close enough and it shows how powerful he was. Now imagine how powerful his master was. Malevolent must have been almost godly strong to keep Serpine, who could kill by pointing at people, Vengeous, who could make things explode with a glare and Vile, who you would need an army to take down. Skulduggery is considered quite powerful, but he fell to Serpine and barely defeated Vengeous. How powerful would the one who killed Malevolent be and who exactly defeated him?

And that is the end of my small monologue today, tomorrow i might attempt the scientific side of things. For example, the transfusion used to create the White Cleaver, the protection in Ghastly's clothes and woven razon items, like the cleavers scythes and Vengeous' cutless.

...>.< Now I feel stupid because I haven't read the third book.

*plans to snatch your idea of Ghastly's clothes*

Read it as soon as possible, it is fantastic.
Its not as funny as the others, but it makes up for it with necromancers.

Hmm... Everyone seems to steal my ideas, take it though, i want to see what you come up with for it.

*does so* twisted

...And now I have to come up with the idea behind them. >.<

LOL

I was thinking either he uses some magical object, he has one small bit of adept magic, or he somehow manupliates air and condenses it into strings somehow, or perhaps he does it with water, Valkyrie does say it feels like nothing she's ever felt before.
Although, there is the chance that he's just a really good tailor...
PostPosted: Sat Jun 13, 2009 11:58 pm

XD There's always that.

I kinda thought he wove some sort of weird metal into the clothes or something, like how in my jeans the up and down threads are dark blue and the side to side are light blue. biggrin

Hmm... Well that works as a theory, he uses some magical substance and he adds it in with the clothing, and it protects the wearer through some kind of magic.

MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, KIDS, AND SEXISM.

Ohoho, I'm such a cheerful person. Can't write a monologue that doesn't focus on an 'ism' word.

Marriage: A union of two people. Usually they think they're in love. Sometimes they're in it for the money. I don't care.

But when you marry your last name may change. And since names are a big deal in SkulPles, I have a couple of guesses as to what couples can do.

1) Nothing. They're married, that's good enough.

2) The woman changes her taken name to match the man's. (Skulduggery Pleasant + Valkyrie Cain = Skulduggery & Valkyrie Pleasant)

3) They exchange last names. (Skulduggrery Pleasant + Valkyrie Cain = Skulduggery Cain and Valkyrie Pleasant)

4) They do any of those to their Given names as well. This, however, would be a bit of a risk, since if they divorce later a bitter ex can seriously f*** up your life. XD

Divorce: This ties in with Sexism, as way back when (and even in places today), Divorce = Killing off the wife. Or the wife is shamed, or something.

I think that Divorce has probably been a viable option for Magicians for a long time. Today, we're only stuck with our spouses for 60 or so years. Now, imagine if you lived for centuries.

Yeah, you're going to get sick of the same person pretty quick.

KIDS: What to name the kids? Obviously, given names are important.

I think the mother probably names the child. Or the father. Or both. It can vary.

What if, God forbid, the kid happened to like name they gave him or her? And wanted to keep it? Or couldn't think of a better name?

As cruel as it is, they probably name their children pretty stupid names. Like...

I dunno. Buttface. Only not, because it would probably damage the child to have their first 7-12 years spent being called Buttface.

SEXISM: Yeahno. If your wife can toss fireballs at you if she gets angry, Sexism was probably dealt with in waaaaay before Skulduggery's great-grandparents were born.

XD

Hmm... another main post! Yay, these are good.

Marriage, tis confusing for these books, who knows what will happen, though im going with option 1.

Yep, Divorce seems right.

Well, they would name it something normal, then when old enough, the child picks their own name.

But remember, if both sides can throw fireballs, then they are even again untill... Someone picks up a sword or throws a bigger fireball.
