Standing a short distance from her family's den, Chione clopped a hoof nervously in the white sand. She'd caught that scent in the fields again. That herd, the nomadic one... they'd returned. And that little rainbow fuzztail with them, for all she knew. The flutter in her stomach, the nerves - but then, if she didn't want this, why did she find herself around those old crumbling rocks day after day? A hope. And a fear.
Turning, she looked to the dark line of trees behind her, then glanced around. Where was her brother at a time like this? Or Embri? For as much as she feared going, she dreaded not. What was he like now? That dark stallion? They'd grown so much. Had he? He probably wasn't even coming. With a soft sigh, Chione looked up at the evening sky, streaked as it was with rich pinks and deepening purples.
Soon...

Keshet ranged ahead of his brothers, sister, father, mother, "uncles", and "aunt", anxious to see the sea first and from there find his way back to Chione. A familiar scent was wafting on the swirling, indecisive winds today, and remembering it instinctively, he bolted, chasing the unpredictable winds. Chione! Her sweet scent was on the wind, though the wind changed direction so much, it was unreliable. In the fading light as he galloped toward Chione and her sweet, delicious scent, the dying sunlight turned his black coat even blacker and made the rainbows of his scales, mane, tail, and forelegs burn brighter than ever. Those cypress trees, that line of trees! Chione was beyond it, he recognized these trees, squat and twisted by the winds from the sea. He had to slow down as he passed between the trunks and under the low boughs, but as soon as he was out from under and behind them, he surged forward again, powerful muscles in his legs pumping as heard as his heart. The Aririn mare, earth-colored, from what he could see in the dying rays of the sun, bigger than he remembered, but still, it was Chione, he'd know her scent anywhere. Keshet skidded to a halt a few yards behind her and gave a quick, almost shy nibble. It had been so long, at least a season, since he'd met Chione and promised to come back for her someday. She was bigger, still a little smaller than him, though, but he still loved her scent and taste. "I'm back," he said softly in his deeper stallion's voice. "I came back for you, just like I said I would."

Chione's eyes went wide at the nibble. Face screwed up, she whirled, set to lay into Jiyuu in that nagging way only a sister can. "Just what'dyou think you're doing, Jii?!" Her voice died away as she found herself staring at a wash of black and color. "Oh-..." It almost reminded her of oil slicks out on the surface of the ocean water, the glimmer and shine, the way the waning light played off his prismatic scales. She didn't seem to recognize who - or what - she was looking at initially, instead lost in the sheen. Coming back to herself, she took a step back. "Oh! It's you..." She felt her cheeks heat almost painfully. He'd gotten so big...

After his sister had wandered away on her own, Jiyuu set about through the forest to search for her. Sadly, it seemed that he wasn't a much better tracker than his father had been, and thus far hadn't been having any luck.
"Just what'd you think you're doing, Jii?!"
His ears perked up at the familiar sound of Chione's voice. It seemed he wasn't as far off course as he had originally thought. Although, what was se scolding him for when she couldn't even see him? Curious, he trudged forward in the direction her voice had coming from, hoping to figure out what she was up to.

"You didn't recognize me?" he asked gently in mock offense. He couldn't help it, he was so happy to see her again that he laughed softly. "It's good to see you again, too, Chione," he said, nuzzling her. "We've both grown up quite a bit, I guess." He looked up towards the sea and the growing evening sky. "It's going to be lovely tonight, more lovely a night than the one after I left." He looked back at her, a smile crossing his features, soft and loving and faintly excited, all at the same time. "Remember what I asked you then? If, when I came back to you and we were both old enough, you'd come wandering with me?"
((Total headdesk moment. Kesh is starting to sound like the kelpie or the each uisge in an old story in Celtic mythology, spiriting away his own true love from her family after a long time away from her. >< Kinda...disturbing...especially since I've never really liked the kelpie in that old story. oO))

(( lol XD I think it's kinda cute heart Here I heard kelpis just drag people to the bottom of the lochs and eat them XD ))
Chione's nose wrinkled lightly in indignation. "Of course I recognized you! Who couldn't? You'd stand out from over the clouds." Her protests quieted as he nuzzled her, a slow smile curving her lips. But her mind wasn't on the evening, then or now. It was that look on his face as much as anything that seemed to have calmed her, if only just for the moment. "I- yeah. I remember... I was waiting..."

As Jiyuu came closer, he caught the scent of another stallion on the wind. He also heard what sounded like conversation. What the heck? he thought to himself. There's hardly ever anyone else out here. The multi-colored male pressed on until he finally came upon his sister and the mystery stallion. The nuzzling and closeness suggested that they were having an intimate moment, but that didn't make any sense at all. They just met, right? Slowly he asked, "What's going on here...?"

Embri perked her ears forward, head slightly tilted. There was a conversation going on, but it seemed to have one too many voices. Jiyuu, Chione... and someone else? Trotting across the sandy beach, the young mare winds her way through the trees and closer to the other Kirin.
Who's that...? The dark coated male was unfamiliar to her, though it seemed as if it should not be so. Certainly he was very familiar to her foster-sister. Judging it safe enough, at least to show herself, Embri stepped out of the bushes daintily and walked over to the small gathering.

((It's one of the two kelpie stories I know of; one involves drowning the rider and eating it, the other involves seducing true love, abducting her, in some sense, and taking her down to the bottom of the sea/Hell/the Otherworld. Sad, pretty story. For some gist of that story, look up on Youtube House Carpenter, though there's this one band that has a song by that name that isn't the same song as the others. >>))
Keshet's smile deepened. "So, are you ready to come with me?" he asked as another male voice cut through the moment.
His head shot up and he eyed the stallion who was clearly Chione's brother. There was no good way to explain to her brother that he had come to take Chione wandering with him. Maybe it would be better if Chione explained...? No, he should at least introduce himself.
"My name is Keshet. My herd passed through here when we were foals, and that's when we met. The herd happens to be in the area, beyond those cypress trees," he added, indicating behind him.

Chione started to open her mouth to respond. She'd have to say goodbye to her siblings f- she flinched as Jiyuu's voice cut the air. "It's alright, Jii. He's- he's right. We met a long time ago, out in those fields with the big rocks." She heard a soft swish of limbs, ears perking as she looked to her sister. "Embri? You too, huh?" The orange mare smiled slightly, though it was nervous and a little strained.

"Ah, I see. Erm, nice to meet you," he replied with a small dip of his head. The stallion seemed to have been saying something to Chione right when he started talking, but Jiyuu had been unable to catch it. "My name is Jiyuu." Noticing the strained look on Chione's face, he quirked an eyebrow. That didn't quite seem like her. "Is something the matter, sis?" Oh, if he only knew...

Chione frowned, glancing up at Keshet, then back to her brother. "Jii... Embri... I already talked to Mom and Dad. I'm going with him." Before either could interject, the words tumbled out. "But I'm coming back! I mean-..." She shifted her weight uneasily. "I'm not leaving you guys forever..."

Embri laid back her ears as she watched Keshet, her very un-Kirin and pointy horn wavering from side to side. "Is this what you want?" She glanced sideways at Chione, regarding Keshet with a measuring look.
"And you, what are your plans for our sister?" Her look summed it up better than her words. Your answer better be good, dark one, or I'll happily run you through as soon as look at you. Strangers made Embri suspicious, especially the male variety.

Keshet nodded at Jiyuu. "A pleasure." He smiled gently and encouragingly at Chione before looking to Jiyuu and the one who must be Embri. "We'll come back from time to time, at least once a season." It was clear at a glance that this Embri deeply suspected him. "I want to show her the world, and to explore it with her at my side," he said carefully. Future plans for love and possibly offspring of their own...not prudent at this juncture, especially not since that last bit was exactly what this Embri must be expecting him to say. It was true, just not the whole truth.

"Wait, what?" Jiyuu replied, completely shocked. This certainly wasn't anything he had ever expected. "You're... leaving?" Why hadn't she given them any fair warning if she had already discussed the matter with Mom and Dad? Talk about dropping a bomb shell on them. Jiyuu looked the stallion over scrutinizingly. He seemed sincere enough, although that didn't necessarily make things that much better. "... Gee, Chione, a little heads up would have been nice," he said with a short laugh, looking up at the sky. "But, if this is what you want then I won't stand in your way. Just don't let this guy mistreat you, ne?" His emotions were in a bit of a whirl, but he did his best to keep this under wraps for now. He could go for a walk or flight on his own later to sort them out.
