"Stay calm, Lauss. Remember what we talked about." Lauss' head bobbed in all directions, looking at balloons, then lights, then costumes, and back to baloons. "I may speak and move on my own, but I must stay by Miss Lee's side." He remembered, every word of it, but... it was so difficult to keep his promise when he'd been given so much freedom. Lee's allowed him to wander off just a bit this visit to the carnival, as the last time no one seemed to notice him at all. As long as he kept his cool, there would be nothing to worry about.
Lee'd come to see Faolan again; perhaps she'd find him, perhaps not. Maybe, if she did manage to track him down, he's talk to her again. No one could say she didn't try. "Miss Lee, what is that?" Since they'd arrived, he'd asked her that exact question at least a dozen times. "That's cotton candy. It's for eating." "Could I try it?" Lee shrugged and headed over to the stall, Lauss giddily trailing behind her. "Could I get some of the pink kind?" She pointed to what she was referring to, as if the man didn't know what she'd meant by that, and he quickly made what she'd asked for. Lee handed the treat over to Lauss as she dug through her purse to find some change. Lauss inspected the strange "cotton", but something within him grabbed his attention. "Another essentic..." He bolted in the direction this aura was pulling him, and Lee hardly realized he was gone. "Oh crap. Lauss! Stop!" She dropped the smallest bill she had on the stall and ran after him. That stupid--! It had been a relatively slow day at Farstep, so losing sight of the proto wasn't a problem.
Twisting and turning through stalls, vardos, and people, Lauss finally stopped directly in front of a vardo, not sure what he was looking at and not sure how to get inside. "Excuse me! Mister Faolan?" he called out from in front of the steps. Lee's pace slowed as she neared her proto, who didn't seem to be "running" anymore. "What are you doing? What did I tell you earlier, hm? How am I supposed to take you anywhere after this?" She continued to scold him as he searched the outside of the house-on-wheels, paying little mind to his master. After all, this was why they'd come here, right?

Ellandra was sitting on the couch, fighting nausea and cuddling Rhian, and wondering what Faolan was doing; he and Ziazan had stepped out for a bit earlier, which was unusual during the daylight hours. The brunette mother-to-be had just finished reading a story to her butterfly proto, when she heard a voice outside calling for Faolan. A familiar voice. She barely had enough time to register that it was Lauss outside the Vardo when her flutterby flicked her antennae in the direction of the door and gently tok off, flying over to the door and trying to open it.
"Essentic! Someone new! May I please meet them, Ellandra?" Butterflies couldn't really pull off the puppy-dog pout, but her owner-mother melted anyway, and, silently urging the twins to please, please give her a break from the nausea for just a little while. went to the door, catching the proto with one arm and managing to open it so that the butterfly remained unseen.
"Hello?" she called, peeking around the door and securing her grip on the fluttering Essentic, not wanting her to leave the vardo in her excitement at meeting someone new. "Lauss? Is that...... is that you?" Surely it wasn't, was it? Whatever could the little tutor be doing here? Unless Lee was here too. . . but still, the question remained - what exactly were they ding here? Just a random visit to the carnival or a deliberate attempt to seek her out? She swallowed roughly, wishing that her morning (really, anytime) sickness would just die down.
In her arms, Rhian fluttered around, able to see just beyond the door even though she couldn't be seen from outside. "Fluffy treat! New friends brought fluffy treat with them! Do you think I can have some?" Ellandra sighed softly and stroked Rhian's wings, still peering out in surprise at the service proto and - ah, there was Lee, why hadn't she seen her before?
"You'll have to ask them, flutterby, it's not my cotton candy to give." Then she smiled and waved a little with her free hand, trying to ignore the persistant discomfort in her stomach. "Lauss, Miss Lee! Hello!"

Lauss tilted his head as he heard an unfamiliar voice from behind that door. That wasn't Fao. Neither was it Zia or Ellandra. As the very much remembered woman reveled herself, Lauss greeted her with a bow. "Hello, Miss Ellandra. Is Mister Faolan here?" Lee blushed at his words, feeling like a fool for coming. "Ah, nevermind." She waved her arms in front of her and stepped toward Lauss, ready to pull him away and drag him back home when she, too, heard an unfamiliar voice. "Flutterby?" Lee stepped a bit closer, trying to peek at who it was Ellandra was talking to.
Lauss peered down at his treat in his hands and looked back toward the door. "The cotton?" He couldn't see who was speaking, but he could still hear them perfectly well. He edged closer and held out the pink fluff in his hand as an offering.
"May we come in?" Lee couldn't pay attention to him and his "forwardness", as she continued to ponder who in the world that voice belonged to. A child? Naw, Ellandra said she didn't have children. Must mean... "Y-you got an essentic?" She wasn't overly loud, and it was more a harsh whisper than anything. She was a bit shocked, but she really shouldn't have been. They'd talked about it before, and Lee was expecting it for a while now. Perhaps not right now, but she was certain Ellandra would be getting an essentic of her own in due time.

Before Ellandra could say or do anything more, a joyous cry of "Fluffy treat!" was heard as Rhian wriggled out of Ellandra's grasp, flew outside, grabbed the cotton candy and returned to the interior of th vardo as fast as she could flutter - which was pretty fast when the butterfly proto wanted to be. Turning to look over her shoulder at the Essentic now perched happily on a rafter, Ellandra sighed, gave a "what can you do?" shrug, and opened the door all of the way.
"Come in, both of you; I'm afraid there's not much room. . . Faolan's out right now, though." She paused and cast another look at Rhian, rolling her eyes fondly. "And yes, miss Lee, you would be right."
Yes, she did have an Essentic. A rather odd one, but werent' they all in their own wonderful ways? And Rhian was already a great help; she would only learn more as she grew. Lauss didn't seemed to have changed too much from the last time she'd seen him, impetuous and curious little fellow that he was. She wondered how he would get along with Rhian, he so interested in information, and her so attuned to emotion alone. . .
Well, this would be an interesting visit, at least! And thank goodness her morning sickness was diminishing now - the twins were giving her a break at last.

As the butterfly-like creature descended to grab Lauss' treat and back to the strange shelter, Lauss couldn't help following it back to it's home. He poked past Ellandra and pushed his head into the vardo, looking up and spotting the butterfly. "Hello, Miss Essentic. I am Lauss." He would have bowed had he not been wedged between a door frame and a pregnant woman. This was the first other flying essentic he'd met and was a bit excited all the same.
Lee's face soured, but accepted the proto's behavior, but only because Ellandra invited them in. She stepped forward and to the vardo, peeking through the door before she actually stepped a foot in. Even she could appreciate it; a romantic little place, wasn't it? Cozy and colorful. Something she wasn't familiar with in any way. She'd grown up with wide open rooms, conservative color schemes, and ostentatious designs and this was a fairy-tale land in every way. She smiled to herself a bit. Now it made sense that Ellandra wanted to be kidnapped. Looking over to Lauss and up to where his eyes were fixed, she found the strange proto above. "What's its purpose?" She remembered the woman not having thought of one the last time they talked, and was curious to see if maybe she ended up with one to help with writing after all.

Rhian ate the cotton candy so fast that Ellandra didn't get a chance to answer Lee's question before the butterfly was down from the rafters again, and greeting the new arrivals in a more proper fashion. "Hello, hello! I'm Rhian! I mentor! I help Ellandra so she doesn't get too stressed or hurt the babies!"
The ever-cheerful Essentic chirped, flicking the visitors to the vardo with her antennae in greeeting. "Thank you for the fluffy treat, floating-sibling!" She added happily, oblivious, for the moment, of any reaction to her unusual method of saying hello.
Finally, Ellandra stepped in and caught Rhian into a loose but secure hug, shaking her had at the butterfly's chatty-ness. "Well, Rhian answered your question well enough I suppose, but, she's a mentor - basically she's helping me sort out some of the difficultis in my life. . . and she's also extemely good at calming me down for some reason."
Odd, since the butterfly was so bubbly..... But it worked, somehow. Only in Rhian's case, though, Ellandra was sure. She hugged her flutterby to her fondly, letting the little proto sense all of the love she had for her as she made room for Lee and Lauss to get comfortable.
"I'm sorry for the lack of space, it must seem so crowded to you," she said, blushing a bit.

"Hello, Miss Rhian. You enjoyed the cotto--" The flicks of her antennae caught Lauss off guard, as all physical gestures tended to do, provided they weren't his master. "What are you--? Stop." His voice was slightly flat, as it almost always was, but held a bit of annoyance. He put his hand in front of his face and shook his head; it... tickled. How unpleasant. "Lauss, be nice." Lee face was stern, and she shrugged apologetically to Ellandra. Lauss put his hand down and simply moved his head out of the way, correcting himself by saying, "Stop, please." The girl looked at him with a quick glare before trying to speak to Ellandra again. Please don't cause trouble, Lauss.
"I kinda wish I'dve gotten a mentor, instead." She smiled, trying to make it seem like a joke; secretly, it was almost true. Lauss would, undoubtedly, be more tolerable had he been able to even fathom what feelings were. "She's cu-- Wait, babies?!" Lee's eyes went wide. This was news. It hadn't taken long for her and Fao to marry, and now there were babies? "Y-you're pregnant?" Lee blushed at the thought. "Pregnant? What does it mean to be 'pregnant'?" His question was for anyone interested in answering, but Lee just looked at him blankly, thinking there may be a better time and place for her to deal with that. She had him to thank, however, for her mind not wandering to places it shouldn't have been. She was, after all, quite talented at over-reacting.

Rhian tilted her head, snuggling closer to her owner mother and turning away from Lauss and his unexpected annoyance. "Sorry, I didn't mean to bother," the young proto said, drooping a bit in Ellandra's hug and saying nothing more. Ellandra hugged her closer in reassurance and stroked a wing lovingly, before nodding in response to Lee's question.
"Yes, I'm pregnant.... and Lauss, it means I'm going to have a baby. Two, actually - twins, since they'll be born at the same time," she said, while trying to comfort the now-sad butterfly proto who hated the thought that she'd been a bother just by saying hello.

Lauss tilted his head. Weird lady. "Not you, Miss Rhian. You are no bother." He didn't remember saying that she was. Perhaps he said it and didn't remember it? "Miss Rhian bewilders me..." And he looked confused as his hand rubbed his forehead while he pondered. He couldn't seem to register how he'd given off that impression, and, in all honesty, couldn't understand why it mattered. To either Rhian or himself. It was a miracle that he hadn't insulted her too harshly yet.
"Babies?" He'd never seen a baby in person, but had seen a few in books. "Why would you want a baby? They are unpleasant looking. Their heads are very large. And they have no hair." Lee brushed aside his comments, and instead focused on Ellandra. "That's... great news." She smiled. "I think. It is, right?" She'd heard of people getting "knocked up" accidentally, and so she didn't want to step on any toes by implying it was a good thing when it was just the opposite. Either way, she honestly meant it, even with her crush on the woman's husband. She blushed a bit. It would be best to keep her distance from now on.

Lauss' comment about babies, both innocent and callous at the same time, caused an interesting reaction from Ellandra - she laughed softly. Why would someone want a baby, indeed, if you only coutned those factors? That proto certainly had an interesting view of the world; it was a good thing Ellandra wasn't easily offended by his somewhat rude question. Smiling softly, she stroked Rhians wind. "Yes, it's good news. . . and I want them because they're my babies, Lauss. I'm afraid it might be something you can't understand until you're a bit older, though."
While Ellandra spoke, Rhian wriggled around in her arms until she was free, whereupon she fluttered over to Lee, ignoring Lauss for the moment since she'd offended him somehow. "Hello! You're really pretty; can I help you somehow? I like helping; I'd help everyone if I could!"

Ah. Must be one of those "important" things he couldn't quite fathom just yet. This was depressing. It wasn't a good feeling to be terrible at what you're meant for. His little ego was damaged, but not because of Ellandra. No, she'd only reminded him of something he'd known for a while now. That he'd have to wait to get to the good stuff. He he wanted to knooow! Why do people want babies? Why do people fall in love? What is the meaning of life? He didn't realize that he wasn't the only one who didn't know the answers to some of those; it wasn't fair, all the same.
And now Rhian wasn't paying attention to him. Hm. He wandered through the vardo-- not really far to go, mind you-- and poked at the little trinkets he found lying around. Interesting. But there was nothing to learn, here, was there? "Miss Ellandra, do you have any books I could read?"
Lee smiled. That was good, then. Unwanted pregnancies were a downer, anyway. The girl blushed at Rhian's compliment. "Th-thank you." This little bugger talked so fast... "Um. Help?" This was sudden. "Nothing right now, I don't think." She felt like she was on the spot. But... the offer was nice, anyway. She would have taken it if she could think of any problems. Rhian was very enthusiastic. How cute. Lee smiled and tilted her head as she looked her over. It didn't occur to her that it was endearing when it was Rhian's enthusiasm, but annoying when it was Lauss'.
Lee turned back to Ellandra, asking, "About how long until the babies come?" Must be twins then?

Ellandra tilted her head a little, watching Lauss. No, he hadn't changed at all since she'd last seen him, most certainly. Well, she hoped he could start growing soon - not to the next stage, ecessarily, but into gaining a bit more common sense. Yes, everyone learned at different speeds, but it was so very dangerous for Lauss to remain . . . well, lacking in common sense. He could get hurt, or worse, and the same could happen to Lee. "There are some books over to your right, Lauss, you might have to dig a bit for them, I havven't gotten the chance to try and organize them recently. I don't know if thy're ones you've read or not, though," she said quietly, catching Rhian again and letitng the butterfly perch on her wrist.
Rhian seemed rather disappointed to be tugged back to her owner-mother's side, but complied without complaint, flicking antennae around and regarding the guests with curiosity. "Well, let me knw if you do need help, okay? I like to help!" Which was true; Rhian's purpose may have been specifically to be a mentor and to help Ellandra becme a better wife and mother, and to move past her fears, the little butterfly was always, always eager to help everyon and anyone, particularly if they needed emotional help. She was good at that - the one thing she knew she was good at, and so was it surprising at all that she wanted to help at any and every opportunity?
Ellandra stroked Rhian's wings, as always enjoying the company of her flutterby, before she smiled to Lee and answered her question. "Well, not for a while... many months; I'm afraid I haven't been keeping track as closely as I should," she confessed, a faint blush dusting her cheeks with the admission.

Lauss nodded to Ellandra and searched where she mentioned, finding an adequate amount to skim through. None of these looked familiar. Interesting. A few novels, a few non-fictions... Plenty to choose from, it seemed. He pick up one of them, the heftiest of the bunch, and read the cover. "How to manage your emotions." This would work. He curled up on the floor and cracked it open, flipping through the pages in a flash, as he often did.
Lee nodded to the giant butterfly; she would most likely take her up on that offer. "Oh." Lee giggles a bit at the woman. "Well I'll have to come by to see them when they're here." She smiled faintly. She didn't think she'd actually do that. It wasn't that she didn't want to see the babies, but... it would be entirely too awkward to see Ellandra and Faolan as a happy couple.
Lauss, apparently finished with the book, floated next to Ellandra holding the book in his hands. "Miss Ellandra, I don't understand." He held it up to her. "It writes that 'understanding emotion is key to leading a prosperous and well-balanced life.'" He flipped to the specific page and held it up once more. "'It is impossible to understand yourself without understanding your feelings.' However, I am proof that this is inaccurate. Is this book supposed to be comical or satirizing something?"

Rhian struggled away from Ellandra again and flicked Lee with her antennae, her head tilting to the side. "Don't be sad or embarrassed, please, you can come see the babies without feeling awkward, it will get better by then, I'm sure!"
Ellandra looked over at Lauss, and smiled at him. "It's not inaccurate, Lauss, and it's factual. You have yet to grow into your feelings, that's all. I think . . . you need some time before you'll be able to comprehend this book - I'm not saying you're unintelligent, little one, we both know that's not true; but you have some growing up to do. Try reading this one again at a later date, perhaps. I think you'll know when you acutally need to read it."
