For those of you out there that enjoy reading manga, which series are your faves? Why do you like them? What are they about?
PostPosted: Sat Jun 06, 2009 12:36 pm

Petshop of Horrors, Matsuri Akino- A string of strange deaths are connected by one thing: Count D's Petshop. A series of stories like Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside or Tales from the Crypt, all connected by Count D. Detective Orcot is out to expose the shop and arrest D, but is the Petshop the real reason behind it all?

I like this series for the Night Gallery/ Tales from the Crypt feel to it and Orcot is hiliarious. The artwork is 90's all over the place, with more realistic proportions and some fashion flair. Every story keeps you guessing.
Petshop of Horrors fansite

Count Cain Saga/Godchild, Kaori Yuki- Count Cain Hargreaves had an unusual hobby, he collects poisons and somehow manages to stumble on strange cases. Supposedly inspired by the TV series Twin Peaks and fairytales, its the 18th century and getting darker.

I love everything Kaori Yuki does from the contraversial Angel Sanctuary to the futuristic punk Neiji. This one has to be my fav, it really touches the Sherlock Homles fangirl in me with a manga twist. <3
Cain Fansite

Saiyuki, Kazuya Minekura- The journey West... Tale of the Monkey King, a chinese myth that has many different versions and inspired many different stories. The sci-fi channel had an original movie, Dragon Ball Z got Goku, The New Police Story and Gen-x Cop's Nicholas Tse played a main character. Minekura brings an entirely new twist to the mix. Preist Sanzo is called by the Merciful goddess for a misson: journey to the west and stop the resurrection of the demon, Gyoumaoh. He's told to meet up with three others, Goyjo half water-demon, goku the monkey king and hakkai a man turned demon. Here's where it changes, Hakkai has a dragon that changes into a jeep, Sanzo packs a pistol and these four bad boys no matter how much they dislike eachother have to save the world.

Great one-liners, a unique art style and sweetly drawn action sequences. Its actually closer to the original myth than anything I've ever scene outside the film with Nicholas Tse, weird thought huh? Original and fresh, I highly recommend it.

5 points to Showren for providing such thorough descriptions and links to reference sites! biggrin You should think about being abook advertiser!

My fave anime series are InuYasha, Weiss Kreuz, Descendants of Darkness, Fruits Basket, DN Angel, and Night Walker. I bet that the mangas are great too, but - because the animes are actually very good - I don't mind watching them instead of reading since a lot of times the print in mangas is difficult for me to read.

Gravitation, however, is a dreadful anime, and it's a great manga series. Escaflowne is one of the rare cases where the anime came BEFORE the manga. I've never seen the anme, but the manga is really good. Mammotte Shugogetten hasn't been made into an anime yet that I know of.

Animes
Like I said, the mangas are probably even better than the shows.

InuYasha
Kagome, a girl in modern times, is a reincarnation of a priestess from the fuedal era. She falls down an enchanted well and lands in the fuedal era where she meets a half-demon InuYasha that was in love with a priestess...the same priestess that Kagome is a reincarnation of. Kagome and InuYasha team up to search for shards of the Sacred Jewel before evil demons can find them.

My favourite characters are Miroku the perverted monk, Mioga the wise and cowardly flea, and Seshomaru InuYasha's cold and sexy older brother that's a full-demon.

Weiss Kruez
4 men that are florists by day and assassins by night. Yep, the heroes are asassins! They work together to assassinate evil doers, like gang leaders. Eventually, a group of sexy, nefarious psychics is introduced!

Omi and Nagi are my fave characters! I love computer-genius chibis that kill people!

Descendants of Darkness
The guardians between the realm of the living and dead. Obviously, they try to protect humans from premature destruction.

My fave things about it are the implied yaoi factor, and that It is the most beautifully-drawn anime that I've EVER seen!

Fruits Basket
Tohru Honda is a kind, but clueless orphaned teenager that moves in with the Sohmas. The Sohma family is cursed to become animals in the Chinese zodiac when a member of the opposite sex hugs them. It's a comedy.

My fave characters are Yuki the Rat, Shigure the Dog, Ayame the Snake, and Black Haru (he's funnier than White Haru).

DN Angel
Dasuke is doomed to change into the phantom theif Dark until his unrequited love is finally returned.

Satoshi, who is doomed to transform into Dark's enemy, is definitely the character that I like most!!!

Night Walker
Shito is a vampire that works as a private detective to kill the night-breeds that take over the bodies of vulnerable humans.

I actually don't have a favourite character in this series. The people are cool, but honestly the dark, complex plots of the episodes are more interesting than the people.

Mangas

Gravitation
Shuichi is a niave, needy singer that falls in love with a rude romance novelist named Yuki. Yes, Shuichi and Yuki are both boys. It's a comedy with loads of sexual references and swearing, so don't read it if you're easily offended.

Hiro, Shuichi' best friend and guitarist, is amazing! Everything a best friend should be.

Mammotte Shugogetten
It's a super cute series about spirits that appear only to the pure of heart. Tasuke finds himself falling in love with Shoa, the innocent Guardian Spirit of the Moon, that has sworn to protect him. Shoa hasn't had a Master for hundreds of years, and doesn't understand anything about the modern world.

Shouko, the girl that shoplifts and tries to get Tasuke and Shoa together, is the greatest in the series!

Escaflowne
A teenage girl from earth gets brought to a planet that it's in the middle of a rebellion trying to overthrow their evil government.

Generally, I hate animes/mangas with giant robots and too much fighting, so the fact that I like this series is pretty amazing. I like the sisters that start off for the evil side and change to the good side, but their names escape me at the moment. sweatdrop

You're welcome!

Weiss is actually my favourite anime, and I'd be willing to buy and read the manga to find out the background of the Schwarz characters. I've looked for the manga on LOADS of websites and I can't find it ANYWHERE! gonk

I love Fruits Basket (Hatsuharu is my one and only manga love) and Petshop of Horrors which people previously described. I also like Naruto (ONLY THE MANGA! Not the biggest fan of the anime in comparison especially the english version it makes me cry). Other ones include

Hana Kimi:
It's about a girl who pretends to be a boy in order to get into the school to meet her hero who's a high jumper. When she gets there she discovers he has given up the high jump due to an injury and it's up to her to get him back into it. Hi jinks follow, love ensues, it's just a really sweet story.

Cat Street:

It's about a former child star trying to find her way after freezing on stage and ruining her career. She finds a sort of half way house/free school and alot of the students there are incredibly gifted but have lost their way. Love ensues. This is much more of a drama kind of manga.

Mars:

This drama is about a shy girl who was abused by her (I believe) foster father and a tough guy biker with a very troubled past and how they manage to fall in love and heal each other.

There are many MANY more, but I'm unable to list them all. Check out under my interests on my profile for more.

I like:

-Bleach: Ichigo Kurosaki discovers that he has the power to be a Soul Reaper - a spirit warrior whose job is to defeat and exterminate demons and evil spirits. The concept sounds stale, yes, but far from it - the take is fresh and interesting and, although the series got into a sort of "who's the strongest" series of battles for a while, it has been chock full of great art and decent characterization throughout. Even the fights are actually pretty interesting - not just a parade of oneupsmanship.

-xxxHolic: Watanuki is a boy who can see spirits...and that really really bothers him. He enters into an agreement to work for Yuko, a lady who runs a mysterious occult shop, until he has earned enough to pay for her to remove his "curse". The manga has a fantastic gothic feel to it and, since it's by CLAMP, the art is elegant and phenomenal. It's like having a cast of loligoths act out your favorite creepy ghost stories. It stands on its own just fine, but it also crosses over with...

-Tsubasa: Behold, another CLAMP project in which they take some of their favorite-to-draw-and-write characters, give them new backstories, and mix them together in new and interesting ways. This one features Sakura and Syaoran; Kuro...omg, I can't remember his real name because he keeps getting called by nicknames; Mokona; and my all-time favorite pretty-boy ~Fai D. Flowright~! Anyway, each of them gets caught up in a strange space-time anomaly and, in order to regain what was lost or protect those they love, they come together to petition Yuko, the Time-Space Witch (see xxxHolic, above), for the means to go dimension-hopping. Ensue cameos of every CLAMP character you know and love.

-Azumanga Daioh: This is a high school manga done right! It's totally shojo, all about girls who are friends and the funny in-jokes and goof-ups they have over their high school years, up to and including their college placement exams. You know how you and your friends have those in-jokes that you all remember, and that make you start laughing whenever you think of them, no matter where you are, and other people look at you funny and when you tell them why you're laughing they give you a blank look? Yeah. All the stories are like that. But if you've read it, you too know exactly why it's hilarious to me anytime I have to split apart disposable chopsticks. My favorite character is Osaka.

-Yotsuba&: By the same author who did Azumanga Daioh, Yotsuba& is about a young girl named Yotsuba who moves into a new neighborhood with her dad and makes friends with the neighbors. Aaaaaand that's pretty much the plot. If you have any clue about the weird and funny stuff young kids do, then you know why it's funny. Like the part where she tries to get advice from everybody else in order to help an older friend get over heartbreak ("You have fat legs! ...And your thighs are all jiggly!"). Or the part where she sees a gangster movie and then goes around shooting everybody with a water pistol. Okay, you're just going to have to trust me - it's hilarious.

@Trickster - I really enjoy the Naruto manga as well! Shame about the anime...ergh. At least I have a Hong Kong sub: no bad editing, just Engrish subtitles...

@everybody - I love the heck out of Fruits Basket too! I particularly squee for Ayame and Shigure - together they're a riot!

I am just getting into Manga, so my knowledge of different ones is really small but my absolute favorite so far is:

Inuyasha. I am watching the Anime right now but I will be borrowing my friend's Manga to read shortly. I am actually Cosplaying as Kagome for an Anime fest. I really like Inuyasha because of the characters. The characters are amazing! I also like the plot line. Its original, at least to me. I like it because Kagome goes back in time by going through the well at her family's place. I dunno, I just really really really like the series. It has already been explained above what it is about.

Death Note was really catching too, but I haven't read much of it to get the greatest feel of it. Death Note is about a kid, Light, who comes across the Death Notebook. If he knows a person face and name, he can right it down in the book and they will die at the time and place of what he wrote down. Light starts to kill off wanted criminals, like murderes, rapists, etc. and the police realize that it is not a coincidence (sp?) that all these wanted people are dieing of the same causes (heart attack) so they try to find the person behind it. Light trys to out-do the police. He is a really smart kid and he dad is a detective I think for the police force. The parts that I have read, he hasn't gotten caught yet, but he almost did.

Trckster, I've always thought that Mars looked good, but I've never read it.

Nanny, I think that Shigure and Ayame are hilarious together, too! rofl Out of everyone in the series, those are the characters that I could imagine my friends and I hanging-out with most.

Gerp, InuYasha = amazing exclaim !

I read a lot of Shojo, just to warn everyone. Not all of these below are Shojo, but they are all my favorites.

Alichino: by Kouyu Shurei
Beautiful creatures called Alichino grant wishes to those in need, but at a price. A young lady searching for an Alichino wants to bring her brother back to life. She meets Tsugiri, a hansome young man who she thinks is an Alichino. Tsugiri turns out to be a mere mortal, but he does have a mysterious connection with these rare creatures, a connection that will bring danger to those around him.

Marmalade Boy and Ultra Maniac :by Wataru Yoshizumi
boy are about school aged kids and their relationships, Marmalade boy has more romance while Ultra Maniac has magic and friendship as a stronger focus.

Vampire Game :by JUDAL
A long time ago King Phelios defeated the Vampire King Duzell. Well Duzell is reincarnated and the granddaughter of Phelios ends up adopting him since he's been reincarnated into cat creature. Princess Ishtar vows to help him find the reincarnation of Phelios so that he can kill him. Ishtar's life isn't easy with family members trying to kill and/or marry her to gain power of the royal throne. And her guard Darres doesn't get much of a break either between her relatives and the Princess's own actions.

Beauty Pop: by Kiyoko Arai
a basic school romance novel with the added bonus of makeovers done by the main cast as all of them enjoy and want to become famous for their makeovers and have made a club called the "Scissors Project" to compete in tournaments to showcase their talents. Loads of humor!

Gunslinger Girl :by Yu Aida
the Social Welfare Agency "rescues" young girls, and then turns them into cyborgs who are trained to do one thing, kill people. Great story, with some wonderful political and science fiction storytelling.

Angelic Layer, xxxHolic,Card Captor Sakura, Wish, and Magic Knight Rayearth :by Clamp
I love Clamp, always have, always will, though chobits is a bit much for me, but I have read it.

Skip-Beat! : by Yoshiki Nakamura
A Revenge Cinderella story, which takes shojo to a new place, the romance isn't the focus at all, it's just the sugary decorations on the cake that is a really charming, funny, and exciting manga story that takes you into the wacky world of showbiz as Kyoko tries to get her revenge by climbing up to stardom and blowing Sho Fuwa out of the water.

Sand Chronicles :by Hinako Ashihara
After her parents get divorced, Ann Uekusa and her mother move from Tokyo to rural Shimane. Accustomed to the anonymity of city living, Ann can't get used to the almost overbearing kindness of the people in her mother's hometown. But when personal tragedy strikes, Ann discovers how much she need that kindness.

Fullmetal Alchemist: by Hiromu Arakawa
Alchemy battles, philosophy mixed with scientific idea and a world wide culture and mythology that just brings the world to life. Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers who use Alchemy to try and bring their dead mother back to life, and end up suffering the consequences, and then decided to try and put their mistake right and get their bodies back to normal, but there are other players in the world that have plans of their own for the two brothers, and danger is just about around every corner they turn round.

FMA and the .Hack// series are my all around favorites when it comes to anime and manga, some other mangas you might enjoy are:
Real Bout High School, DNAngel, Mythical Detective Ragnarok Loki, Hot Gimmick, and Wild Ones.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 03, 2009 5:42 pm

Umi, I own the first two disks of FMA. I like it. I don't love it, but I like it. The whole "equivilant exchange" thing is vey interesting, and it makes a lot of sense.

I've read the first 3 manga in Magic Knights Rayearth. It's a bit too...cute for me get into, but I want to cosplay as Fuu because in real life I have curly blonde hair and glasses! xd Plus, her outfit isn't too risque.

I always thought Card Captor Sakura seemed fun, but I haven't looked into it yet.

So, Clamp is a person that wrote all of those manga series? eek Wow, I always thought it was a company! surprised

Most of my favorites have already been explained. But I'll list them and tell you what i like about them too.

Anime

Inuyasha- I really enjoy the whole concept of Kagome being able to go back in time. The demons are really interesting too. But my favorite thing about this anime is the characters. Especially the males whee .

Fruits basket- Changing into animals has got to be the coolest, even if it is a curse. Yuki and Kyo (squee, kyo) are really funny. the cat and the mouse battling it out, classic. Black Haru is the greatest!

The manga are probably better than the shows but i haven't been able to read them sweatdrop . My friends (you know who you are) Have been pushing me to watch DN Angel. i really want to so I'm hoping I'll get to see it soon.

Manga

Destiny's hand- I read it a little while ago and i can't seem to remember much. but i will tell you what i know. It's about pirates on a quest. The ships name is Destiny's Hand run under captain Blaine. Sorry i can't give more. gonk I feel horrible that i can't remember but when i re-read it i will come back and fix this for you. So you know what it really is about.

Fullmetal Alchemist- Ed and Al are the funniest brother duo to me. The way everybody continually calls Ed 'short', 'runt', 'pipsqueak', and 'small' have me laughing uncontrollably. It's even more awesome when he fights hard core. Al acts like the older brother when technically he is the younger. i find it sweet how they are always looking out for each other.
