Kanani smiled as she watched a small dot in the sky, which, in fact, was the fading form of her mate. He had spent the whole morning with her, drifting along the treetops to fetch her the ripest apples and tenderest leaves. Then, as always, they had lain together, watching the sky and the clouds as the time passed. He had whispered stories of long-forgotten lore, and she had shared some of her childhood memories of her old land with him. He always had a way of softening those memories, making her realize how fortunate she was to have escaped the hungry fires... And though she felt that she could spend an eternity with him, just laying there on the forest edge, she knew that it was only natural for him to leave. Her place was within the trees; his was the sky.

So now, as his golden form disappeared within the wispy clouds, she turned to face the open field to the south. She had stayed within the trees for the past few days, and now, with the waiting invitation, she had the urge to travel through that open grass. A little sun was always appreciated; it made her feel uplifted.

She smiled to herself, knowing that the day was still young, and set off at a trot into the open valley.

Selena's knees ached. But in a good way. A refreshing way that reminded her of her beating heart.

The day was fairly young, she had only recently returned from her full night adventure through the mountains. She loved the night. It made her feel safe and alive. The coolness of the wind had made her shiver and smile. And there had not been any moon. All the better.

Now she was laying on the bank of a tiny river, on the edge of the open valley. The day was sunny so she didn't want to leave the nice shade.

She was enjoying herself. The solitude was nice, she could hear the orchestra of birds and the sound of the laughing wind. it made her a little sad that she had no one to share it with. But she had very few friends in this land, if any. So she had no other choice really. And it didn't bother her.

She liked being alone, more than she liked being with others.

At least she thought she was alone. Until she saw a small figure emerging from the forest. A mare.
Selena could see her blue markings and beautiful white feathering.

It was nice to see someone out so early as her. Selena smiles and sipped some ice cold water from the stream.

It only took a moment for Kanani to spot the other mare sitting alongside the small stream. She hadn't met many mares outside of her own Cerynei lineage, and to be truthful, wasn't quite sure how a normal Soquili mare would react to her. Of course, they couldn't be any different from the males, and seeing as the males had more potential to be dangerous, she should have nothing to be nervous about... And therefore, she decided that the day was prefect to meet another.

She trotted across the field, her lean muscles bunching in her deer-like legs. The slight breeze tickled her face as it brushed her long bangs across her cheeks.

She slowed as she neared the other mare, and a warm smile came to her face as she greeted, "Good morning to you! I took it as my pleasure to be aquainted. My name is Kanani, and I come from the depths of the Kawani forest. What may I address you by?"

Selena heard the mare approach before she could even see her clearly. But she decided to react only when the beautiful mare spoke.

Selena bowed at the mare and thought of Brain, he would surely want her to try to be friend this mare. She had not met very many mares recently. But this one seemed perfectly nice.

"That is quite the introduction," she said with a quiet giggle, not noticing the diffrence between this mare and herself, "I am Selena. I am from a far off land. I know not the the forest of which you speak, but it is nice to meet you either way."

Kanani's ears twitched as the wind ruffled the fur within them.

"Selena? That's a lovely name, if I may say so." She looked the other mare over, her bright eyes lingering on the strange cloth wrapped about her neck, then shifting to the lovely white mane that reminded her of her own fetlock feathers.

"The Kawani is a wide forest found in the heart of the Soquili lands. But I haven't lived there my whole life; in fact, I've been here for only a few months now. Enough to familiarize myself with the surroundings." Her head turned to gaze off in the distance, where the trees of the woods looking only like a thin line. Her eyes became dimmer as she though of her own home--the one that only terrible memories remained of.

"I am also from a different land, like you. A far off forest, as big as any sea. My kind lived there--is was our home, our haven. But that place was consumed with fire, and we were forced to return to the place of our ancestors. The land of the Soquili."

Then a bright smile came to her face, and she turned back to Selena. "But that is the past. I've found a new life here, and I think I wouldn't trade it for anything else."

Selena watched the beautiful mare as she gazed into the void, seeing the forest not far and the one in her mind's eye. She listened to the story of the mare's home. it was a sad one. And it almost made Selena smile. Not because she enjoyed the suffering of this mare, but because she was the first Selena had met that had not come from these strange lands.

Selena did not know the name of her birth lands, and due to recent events, she no longer cared. She had once wanted tot return, seek revenge on those that killed her parents, but now she only wanted to learn how to make a future for herself.

When the mare finished Selena nodded and said gently, "I am glad that you have found happiness, I have only been here for a short time, so I am still discovering new areas in this vast land."

Then she picked up a sentence in the mare's story that made her ears perk up, and her eyes open in interest.

"Your kind?" She asked, cocking her head, "Are you not a Soquili?" Only now she noticed the mare's large ears and deer like tail. How interesting.

Kanani chuckled quietly, noticing the telltale curiosity in Selena's voice.

"I am not Soquili, no. An ancestor, or a cousin, perhaps. But I am a Cerynei: I resemble a deer, in appearance and physicality. You seem to have noticed." She motioned to her small tail and gave it a wiggle.

"But that doesn't mean that I'm different, at least inside. I've experienced the same things that everyone else has, if not more. I eat the same things, live in the same forests--well, I'm not really sure how I'm different. Except that I look different. But I guess that's all that matters, right?" She smiled, turning her gaze to look off into the distance.

"And you, Selena? Where did you come from?"

Selena blinked. The truths this Soquili...Cerynei, was speaking were so beautiful. She seemed to glow in Selena's eyes. She was confident, strong and beautiful. Selena felt minor, small in comparison to this mare. Selena felt like these truths were somehow familiar, as if they were locked inside her own heart, but she had never acknowledged them because of what she had lived through...She took a breathe. It felt new and crisp. Like a cold, winter morning.

"Right..." she said.

"I am, unfortunately, not sure where I came from. I came from far away, but I do not know the name of my birth lands. I was very young when I left. But it was similar to these lands. There were Soquili, two-leggers and other Fauna roaming freely."

Kanani studied the other mare for a second, noticing an instant change in her, but what it was, she wasn't sure. Deep down, there seemed to be some kind of conflict... something that Kanani could never know. But it wouldn't stop her from trying to help.

"Well, whatever land it was, I'm sure that it was beautiful. All lands are beautiful, at some time or another. It just depends on the timing." She smiled, pricking her fuzzy ears forward.

"Say, have you ever been in the forest, Selena?"

A quick change of subject seemed to be fitting.

"The forest?" Selena asked with a bit of cruel humor in her tone, "Yes I have been in the forest, it is one of my preferred havens for sunny days. Me and the sun don't get along, if you know what I mean." She said with a smile and stretched out her body to show the other mare her dark coat. A coat that quickly warmed when the sun was in the sky.

"Have you been at the mineral spring deep inside the forest?"

Kanani giggled at the dark fur, realizing how she had overlooked that simple detail. Her fur, though not as dark, still heated up in the sun.

"The mineral spring? I don't think I've ever heard of that... of course, I don't spend too much time in one area. I'm more of a traveler, so I don't take the time to explore a place unless it really catches my eye." She turned her head towards the distant trees, feeling the natural heart-pull that she felt towards such places. She was from a land that used to be nothing but forest, and had spent her whole life loving the trees.

"What's it like?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

Selena flicked her ear at the mare. She was also one to walk around and explore rather than stay in one place? Well, they were not very different it seemed, even though they were different species. But that thought didn't even cross Selena's mind. What difference did it make?

"I found it one cool night while trying to find different paths that had been forgot in the forest," one of her preferred hobbies, "It is quite something. The water smells funny, almost like eggs, but the water is warm, hot almost, and it does miracle for wounds or scraps. Its also great for tensed muscles." She said with a small smile. It felt a bit strange sharing this information, it almost felt private or special in Selena's heart. But something about this mare made Sel feel like she could trust her.

"Would you like me to show you?"

Kanani smiled, flexing the muscles beneath her lithe legs. Now that she thought of it, a bath in a warm spring could do her some good, and perhaps relieve days' worth of tension that she experienced from the absence of her mate. And, being adventurous as she was, she couldn't resist the opportunity to smell water that possessed the scent of eggs!

"I'd love for you to show me!" she exclaimed, glee flooding her voice as she grinned widely. "You are so kind for offering this to me. I hope that I can also give you something to enjoy!"

Selena smiled nervously at the mare's excitement. She was still not used to everyone knowing her as a stranger. She was so used to the spit-out answers and glares or snickers she had received while she was still with Team Rocket. But here, in these new lands, she was the new kid. The mare no-one really knew about. She had a clean slate with all of them. She smiled, more confidently. "Follow me Kanani. The are not too far."
She stood and began to walk on the trail. Her ears flicked towards the other marwe as she finished speaking. Selena smirked to herself silently. Kind? Thats a new one. She tried not to take the word the wrong way, whenever she had been called kind, or offered something that she would enjoy, there was always, always a heavy layer of sarcasm to hide the murderous intention of the speaker. Selena bonked herself mentally. This mare was the one that was kind and pure, her intentions were true. Selena really needed to adjust to all of this.

Kanani followed eagerly behind the darker mare, her mood heightening as they entered the forest. This was where she lived, the place that she knew. The trees had always been kind to her, even in this new land, and it was in the forest that she knew she could always find refuge. She was beginning to think that maybe it was the same for this other mare.

She focused on Selena's back. The mare seemed to be thinking, though of what, Kanani could not know. Though she seemed to be a bit troubled, her outward appearance was good-humored and kind, and Kanani felt that she really would be able to trust her.

"It must be so nice to have a secret spot within these trees. I've lived my whole life in the forest, and I know how comforting it can be," she said quietly, admiring the foliage around her. She smiled to herself, her attitude honest and sincere.
